Pricing for the Volvo XC40 has been revised in Malaysia, with the non-EV variants – T5 R-Design and Recharge T5 R-Design – now retailing for more than before.
Starting with the T5 R-Design, the previous price was RM231,651 on-the-road with insurance, inclusive of the ongoing sales and service tax (SST) exemption – this was the revised amount announced together with the launch of the Recharge T5 R-Design last February.
Following the latest price list, the non-plug-in hybrid variant now goes for RM233,710.82, which is RM2,059.82 higher than what was listed in the February 2021 price list. Meanwhile, the Recharge T5 R-Design currently retails at RM245,818.90, or RM3,821.86 more than its previous asking price of RM241,997.04.
These price changes come with some revisions to the standard equipment, which were apparently made earlier this year, according to Volvo Car Malaysia. For starters, both variants no longer come with a private locking function for the glove box and tailgate, a powered tailgate with hands-free operation and a 12-volt power socket in the boot area – a rear seat armrest has been added to both though.
The Recharge T5 R-Design in particular still comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, but they are now a five-spoke black diamond cut design instead of the T5 R-Design’s five-double-spoke matte black diamond cut look – both shared the same wheels previously. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid variant gets an upgraded 14-speaker, 600-watt Harman Kardon sound system rather than an eight-speaker, 250-watt high performance audio system.
Available colours for the XC40 now include Crystal White Pearl, Black Stone, Glacier Silver Metallic, Denim Blue Metallic and Thunder Grey Metallic, with the last two options replacing Bursting Blue Metallic and Coral Red Metallic that were offered previously.
Beyond these changes, the rest of the spec sheet appears to be the same as before. The Recharge T5 powertrain still consists of a a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that provides 180 PS (178 hp) and 265 Nm of torque.
This is paired with an electric motor rated at 82 PS (81 hp) and 160 Nm that is sandwiched between the engine and a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, resulting in a total system output of 262 PS (258 hp) and 425 Nm. The electric motor draws power from a 10.7-kWh lithium-ion battery that is good for 44 km of pure electric driving.
As for the T5 R-Design, it soldiers on with its 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 252 PS (249 hp) and 350 Nm, which is mated to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system. A five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty remains standard, with the PHEV variant also coming with an eight-year, 160,000-km warranty for its battery.

wait does it lose out on the powered tailgate altogether or just the handsfree option? unfortunate because it really helps when holding lots of stuff tbh.
also they should give an option for adding in the Harmon Kardon speakers (as an optional extra) for those who don’t want the plug in hybrid/full ev. my one gripe with the plug in hybrid is that it’s not an AWD vehicle which really defeats the purpose of a crossover/suv imho. yes i know it’s not necessary in malaysia but if i’m going to buy a crossover/suv i want it in AWD. otherwise might as well just get a sedan…
How many crossovers generally has AWD option anyways? The days of pure SUV with AWD are over, nowadays AWD cannot sell and it is the 2WD variants which majority of buyers want. Maybe there are some of you who wants AWD but that puts you in the Manual Stick Shift Demanding niche, not a lot to make it worthwhile.
that’s fair, and i completely understand that it will price out a lot of potential customers. it’s just that the petrol version and full electric version are AWD for this particular vehicle. it’s just a bit odd they went with FWD only for the plug in hybrid, despite their larger SUVs having the AWD setup for their plug in hybrid versions. maybe it’s a cost cutting effort of Volvos part too considering it’s an ‘entry level’ offering but damn how i wished it was AWD haha.
ure wrong tho, most of the suv’s sold overseas are still awd, just cheapo malaysian dealers scrapping it to increase profits and save aftersales hassles.
When will the Chinese EV come into Malaysia to compete ? Currently we are getting OLD tech and outdated cars from Legacy Auto.
