Launched earlier today, the 2022 Proton X70 MC (minor change) is what we’re focusing on in our latest walk-around video tour. The X70 has been a popular choice among SUV buyers since it was introduced back in 2018, and the new updates are noteworthy.
As a start, the C-segment model gains the 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine from the smaller X50. Offered in direct-injected TGDi form, the mill puts out 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 255 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm, which is 7 PS and 45 Nm less than the 1.8 litre turbo four-pot that will continue to be available with 184 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.
Both engines come standard with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive, except for the 1.5 Executive AWD variant, which marks the return of all-wheel drive for the X70. The 1.5 Executive AWD sits above the base 1.5 Standard 2WD and 1.5 Executive 2WD, while further up the range are the 1.5 Premium 2WD and 1.8 Premium 2WD – the latter is the only one with the larger-displacement engine.
Beyond the mechanical changes, the X70 also receives exterior and interior revisions that are highlighted in the video. Available equipment for the X70 remains largely unchanged from before too, and you can find out exactly what each variant gets in our spec-by-spec comparison in our original launch story.
In terms of pricing, the X70 starts at RM93,900 for the base 1.5 Standard 2WD, moving up to RM105,500 for the 1.5 Executive 2WD and RM111,300 for the 1.5 Executive AWD. The 1.5 Premium 2WD retails at RM117,900 and at the top of the price range is the 1.8 Premium at RM121,800. These figures are on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the sales and service tax (SST) exemption valid until the end of the month.

U can’t say is Volvo’s engine only because XC40 Recharge employs the Geely engine developed and widely used in all other Geely’s models.
Real simple. Is XC40 a Volvo? If yes, then it is a Volvo engine. PERIOD.
LOL I get your logic – Every woman can possibly be the mom, when U ignore whoever the dad is
It is the Swiss Swatch Grade of Engines.
Likely not been the desired and preferred engine among car enthusiast and racers too.
More like the Swatch X Omega Speedmaster Moonswatch of car.
You get an expensive movement in a less complex body for a far more affordable price.
Better value than Renault Koleos and Volvo XC60.
renault i can agree, french cars r sh!t but volvo?? nah lolz! syiok sendri
Volvo XC60 handling not outstanding,
Both X70 and XC60 is family oriented 5 seater,
Comparable.
The same goodness made better
Friendly reminder that the 1.5L 1477cc TL3 177PS 255Nm engine configuration is now being replaced by the 1.5L 1499cc TL4 181PS 290Nm engine configuration in China (see Binrui Cool). Not only does the new 1.5L TL4 benefit from the same 1401-1600cc road tax and 1401-1650cc car insurance brackets as the old 1.5L TL3, but it also produces comparable power to the original 1.8L 1799cc TL4 184PS 300Nm engine configuration which sits at the more expensive 1601-1800cc road tax and 1651cc-2200cc car insurance brackets. Our Malaysian X50 is still on the oldest and ugliest Boyue pre-facelift design whilst the Chinese Boyue has gone through several extensive facelifts (Pro, X, ’22) and is about to be replaced by an all-new 2nd generation (FX11)…
No duhhh coz X50 is not analogous to Boyue. Dumb hater is dumb hater.
Looks like the special edition sold last year
Aiyah… ask those Volvo mechanics what so special, tunggu time parts rosak, most owner will say I nak jual,so no need spend banyak, tukar minyak je la….( from experience)
1st thing to know is that Geely have replaced the 1.5 3 cylinder engine with a 1.4 4 cylinder engine because of the potential problems and cost of maintenance required. However, they still need to make back what they have spend on developing the engine.
Just like the nonsense P1 have told everyone the way higher priced X50 & X70 due to research required to change from left hand drive to right hand.
Now they are trying to justifying the miserable RM1k reduction only using a way lower spec engine in the X70.
Volvo engine and techs?
I guess the same apply for resale value.
We shall see….
