2023 Toyota Yaris facelift debuts in Thailand – more aggressive styling, updated kit, 1.2L, CVT; from RM72k

Toyota Motor Thailand has revealed another facelift for the Toyota Yaris, which brings about some significant design changes. The ASEAN-market Yaris was first introduced in 2013 and received its first major update in 2017, with the next one arriving in 2020.

In terms of styling, there’s a more striking front end said to be inspired by the hammerhead design that Toyota is fond of these days. The front bumper is now a lot more aggressive with its sharp angles and lines, highlighting a wide lower apron featuring functional and faux intakes.

The bumper neatly integrates the sharper, notched LED headlamps by way of a protruding section just ahead of the bonnet shutline which also carries the Toyota logo. As for the rear, the taillights appear to be carried over, but the bumper has been revised to include faux outlets at the corners.

Further down, you’ll also find a diffuser-like element decorated with a carbon-like pattern that is surrounded by black trim for the new reflectors. A new exterior colour called Cement Gray Metallic joins Spicy Scarlet, Platinum White Pearl and Red Mica Metallic to provide customers with four two-tone themes – all with black roofs. Monotone choices include Attitude Black Mica, Metal Stream Metallic, Urban Metal and Platinum White Pearl.

While the exterior changes are pronounced, the interior remains largely the same as before, save for a larger nine-inch touchscreen head unit that is offered for the Premium and Premium S variants. An eight-inch unit is standard for the Smart, while the base Sport gets a seven-inch system instead – Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is supported for all but the smallest unit. Elsewhere, there are new seat designs, updated trim materials and USB-C ports.

In terms of available equipment, the Thai-spec Yaris can be had with 15-inch wheels, fabric or leather seat upholstery, a 4.2-inch Optitron multi-info display, keyless entry and engine start, four or six speakers, T-Connect telematics and a panoramic view monitor.

The top two variants (Premium and Premium S) get a few active safety features like Pre-Collision System (autonomous emergency braking), Lane Departure Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor. Passive systems such as VSC, traction control, hill start assist, ABS, EBD and brake assist are standard across the range.

Under the bonnet, the 3NR-FKE 1.2 litre NA four-cylinder makes a return and continues to put out 92 PS and 109 Nm of torque. This is paired with a Super CVT-i transmission that sends drive to the front wheels, with the powertrain claimed to deliver a fuel consumption of 23.3 km/l.

As for pricing, the Sport retails for 559,000 baht (RM72,145) and is followed by the Smart at 619,000 baht (RM79,891), the Premium at 679,000 baht (RM87,635) and finally, the Premium S priced at 694,000 baht (RM89,571). Compared to the 2020 facelift, prices have gone up by around 10,000 to 15,000 baht (RM1,290 to RM1,935).

Toyota Motor Thailand also offers a range of accessories and three dress-up packages, with the latter adding various cosmetic items to the exterior. These packages include the Lusso for 19,990 baht (RM2,580), the Chiaro for 9,690 baht (RM1,251) and the Presto for 16,500 baht (RM2,130).

With the reveal of the facelifted Yaris, it looks like we may not see an all-new model built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) anytime soon – the latest Vios which is set to go on sale in Malaysia has already made the shift to DNGA.
