  • Toyota to launch 10 new electrified models in China – Corolla and Levin PHEVs, C-HR-based electric vehicle

At this year’s Beijing Motor Show, Toyota announced that it will introduce 10 new electrified vehicles in China by the end of 2020. The first vehicles to be introduced will be plug-in hybrid versions of the Corolla and Levin, as well as a battery electric vehicle (BEV).

The PHEV models made their debut at the show, but exact specifications weren’t provided at the time – Toyota merely says they offer an electric-only driving range of 50 km or greater. Production of both models is set to take place in China next year, marking Toyota’s first overseas production of PHEVs.

The cars will go on sale in the same year as well, with GAC Toyota Motor being responsible for the Corolla, while the Levin will be sold by FAW Toyota. Aside from different styling, both PHEVs should share identical mechanicals. Conventional hybrid versions of the Corolla and Levin have already been introduced in China, which are also produced locally.

On the BEV, Toyota says the model will be based on the C-HR (GAC Toyota Motor)/IZOA (FAW Toyota Motor), saying the vehicle will arrive in 2020. In China, the compact SUVs have yet to go on sale, and will be powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine mated to a Direct Shift-CVT – both being new technologies recently revealed by Toyota.

To further accelerate Toyota’s China-based vehicle electrification efforts, the company is aiming to build a local production base for key components involving its Chinese partners. In 2015, the company began production of transaxles for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) at Toyota Motor (Changshu) Auto Parts (TMCAP).

Moving forward, it plans to increase the annual production capacity for nickel-metal hydride battery modules at Sinogy Toyota Automotive Energy System and Corun PEVE Automotive Battery to 220,000 units in 2020.

Toyota is also strengthening its local R&D and production bases with a new battery testing facility at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (China) set to open in 2020. Last year, it also began a three-year verification-test programme in China that involves the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell vehicle as well as commercial vehicles.

  • Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine – PHEV version debuts

Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine – PHEV version debuts

Volvo has chosen this year’s Beijing Motor Show to unveil the new XC40 T5 Twin Engine, the plug-in hybrid version of the compact SUV. With the new variant, every SUV in the Swedish automaker’s line-up is now available as a PHEV.

For now, the company hasn’t revealed exact specifications of the T5 Twin Engine powertrain, but it should be similar to what was shown to us back in October 2015. The base engine used is a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder Drive-E unit that makes 180 hp, which is supplemented by a 55 kW electric motor and a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.

We were told at the time that the total system output was rated at 250 PS and 400 Nm of torque. This setup is almost identical to the one used in the new Geely Bo Rui GE, which is also celebrating its premiere in Beijing.

There’s not much different in terms of the XC40 PHEV’s design, with the addition of a charging port on the left side being the only notable revision along with the dedicated badges. It’s much the same story on the inside, with the Sensus system now gaining additional drive modes. The example you see in these photos is wearing the R-Design trim.

The XC40 was recently crowned 2018 European Car of the Year, and has already gone on sale in a number of markets. However, order books for the compact SUV have yet to be opened in China, or in Malaysia for that matter.

  • Everus EV Concept debuts – all-electric Honda HR-V?

Everus EV Concept debuts – all-electric Honda HR-V?

Honda has unveiled a new concept at this year’s Beijing Motor Show called the Everus EV Concept, which previews the first mass-production EV model Honda will introduce exclusively in China in the future.

At first glance, it certainly looks like a futuristic version of the Honda HR-V, with almost all the same lines as the B-segment crossover and even the high-mounted rear door handles. However, the front fascia features 3D-effect headlamps, the Everus badge and the grille has been redesigned to accommodate what should be a charging port.

The lower apron now sports a prominent intake, with the “mouth” being flanked by slim LED strips in the corners of the bumper. Blue lighting strips are also aplenty here, as seen at the base of the bonnet, bumper lip and side skirts.

For now, the release doesn’t include any details about the electric powertrain that is used, but we are told the production version will go on sale this year. The crossover will be marketed under the Everus brand owned by Guangqi Honda, a joint venture between Honda and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group).

  • 2019 Lexus ES debuts in Beijing – TNGA platform, hybrid and petrol powertrains, F Sport package

2019 Lexus ES debuts in Beijing – TNGA platform, hybrid and petrol powertrains, F Sport package

After giving us an early look at the all-new 2019 Lexus ES, the carmaker has now released full details of its BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class fighter.

The seventh-generation (XV70) ES rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-K platform, which is also used for the latest Camry. This has resulted in some dimensional changes, with the sedan now 66 mm longer and 46 mm wider, but sees 5 mm removed from its height. The wheelbase has also grown by 51 mm, as do the front (+10 mm) and rear (+38 mm) tracks.

Design-wise, the ES follows in the footsteps of its larger sibling, the LS, with a significant revision to brand’s trademark spindle grille that now extends further. Depending on the variant – ES 250, ES 260 (China-spec), ES 350 and ES 300h – the grille comes with vertical slats or a cross-hatch pattern arranged in parallel.

The Z-shaped, triple-element headlamps are also new, although they aren’t as slender in appearance as those on the LS. The lighting units come with a two-stage adaptive high beam system, where its 24 individual LED light array is capable of adapting the light pattern to provide better illumination while reducing glare for oncoming drivers.

2019 Lexus ES debuts in Beijing – TNGA platform, hybrid and petrol powertrains, F Sport package

Moving towards the rear, the ES’ haunches are now more prominent, with a distinct line that originates from the top of the new taillights, and progresses towards the front headlamps. The side window kink is also significantly sharper here, and notable creases play with light and shadow to create a more dynamic three-quarter view.

This trend is continued when viewing the car from the back, with the bumper and boot lid coming together to mimic the “X look” seen at the front. Part of the taillights are also covered by a wide trim piece that plays host to the car’s reverse camera, and there’s a small spoiler on the boot lid, with the Lexus logo positioned below it.

There are three different wheel designs (17 to 18 inches in size) for the ES 350 and ES 300h, but those who opt for the F Sport package get standard 19-inch units with a design similar to those on the LC. The F Sport package also comes with a more pronounced rear spoiler, a darker lower rear valance and an exclusive Heat Blue metallic paint shown here. The standard palette consists of 12 colours, including two new ones – Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Sunlight Green.

Moving inside, the ES’ cabin has been overhauled with the instruments now housed within a binnacle that isn’t unlike those in the LS and LC, with control dials within easy reach reminiscent of the LFA. There’s also the theatrical digital display in the instrument cluster that changes its appearance depending on the selected drive mode.

2019 Lexus ES debuts in Beijing – TNGA platform, hybrid and petrol powertrains, F Sport package

For infotainment needs, there’s a standard eight-inch screen, or an optional 12.3 inch unit – both are paired to the Lexus touchpad controller in the centre console. Elsewhere, the centre stack has been tidied up with a neater layout of buttons for the climate control and media systems. The analogue clock has also been shifted to beside the infotainment screen and the gear lever is new as well.

Passengers in the rear will enjoy a lower hip point and the headliner has been configured to preserve headroom while the longer wheelbase delivers uncharacteristically generous legroom. There’s also a number of Interior colour combinations to choose from, including Black, Chateau, Topaz Brown and a new Rich Cream.

Models with the F Sport package get a unique Hadori metallic cabin trim that features fluctuating wave patterns for a 3D look, inspired by the making of a traditional Japanese sword. Other models will continue to offer traditional materials like bamboo and Shimamoku wood for a hand-crafted feel.

As for the oily bits, all ES 350s are powered by a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine with updated D4-S fuel injection, which sends drive to the front via an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. The mill itself now makes 300 hp and 355 Nm of torque, which is 32 hp and 19 Nm more than the V6 in the previous-generation model. In selected markets, the ES 250 is powered by a 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine featuring Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT i) and an overall thermal efficiency of 38%.

2019 Lexus ES debuts in Beijing – TNGA platform, hybrid and petrol powertrains, F Sport package

In the ES 300h, a 2.5 litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine works with a lighter, more compact, more power dense electric motor, self-charging hybrid system and electronically controlled continuously variable transmission with intelligence (ECVT-i). The total system output is rated at 205 hp, with the powertrain capable of delivering a claimed 17 km/l.

As mentioned earlier, the ES now uses the front-wheel drive TNGA-K platform, which Lexus says rivals the Global Architecture-L rear-wheel drive platform used for the LC and LS in terms of rigidity. The chassis features an all-new double wishbone suspension design, rack-mounted electric power steering and a V-brace mounted behind the rear seat.

An Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system with adjustable dampers is offered for F Sport models, which also comes with an exclusive Sport+ drive mode. Select that and the most aggressive engine, transmission and suspension settings are delivered to you for maximum performance, along with a new Engine Sound Enhancement feature.

Lastly, all versions of the ES come with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 as standard equipment, which adds new capabilities like daytime bicyclist detection which is part of the comprehensive Pre-Collision System (PCS) that already detects oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. Sales of the new ES is slated to start later this year.

  • Beijing 2018: Geely Borui GE hybrid variants unveiled – PHEV and MHEV D-segment sedans, 1.5T 7DCT

Beijing 2018: Geely Borui GE hybrid variants unveiled – PHEV and MHEV D-segment sedans, 1.5T 7DCT

Geely Auto has unveiled its flagship new energy sedan at the 2018 Beijing International Auto Show. The Geely Borui GE is the hybrid version of the existing Borui sold in the Chinese market. The Borui, a large D-segment sedan, is Geely’s existing flagship model.

There are two variants of the Borui GE – the PHEV plug-in hybrid and MHEV, M for mild. The PHEV powertrain combines a 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Jointly developed with Volvo, which Geely owns, this powertrain’s fuel consumption is rated at 1.6 litres per 100 km. Geely is proud of the powertrain, which it says surpasses international brands in FC and performance.

Volvo’s version is called the T5 Twin Engine, where the engine puts out 180 hp and the electric motor 55 kW. The T5’s total system output is 250 PS and 400 Nm. The DCT used here is Volvo-designed and not the previously employed Ford Powershift (Getrag) unit. More details on the Borui GE’s PHEV unit soon, as we navigate Geely’s packed stand.

Besides the PHEV, the Borui GE also gets a new regular (non plug-in) hybrid MHEV variant that uses the same 1.5 litre turbo engine. This 48V mild hybrid employs a battery starter generator (BSG) unit to give it fuel consumption of 5.8 litres per 100 km, which is 15% lower than what the engine alone will do alone.

Launched in 2015, the Borui is a D-segment sedan designed by Peter Horbury, the former Volvo designer who is now Geely’s senior VP of design. The three existing petrol engines are a 1.8T, 2.4 NA and 3.5 V6.

This debut is part of Geely’s green mission, which is to be China’s leader in new energy vehicles.

“China will ultimately become the global centre of a new energy revolution that will reinvent the car as we know it, hence making its automotive industry stronger and more resilient. As a leading Chinese automotive brand, we’ve realised that competition in this new era will come in the form of a technology war and that we must lead through technological innovation to become the vanguard of this new age,” An Conghui, president and CEO of Geely Auto, said at the Borui GE’s unveiling in Beijing.

“Geely realised this 12 years ago as we began our foray into the new energy sector by investing heavily in research and development, integrated our global resources, as well as strengthen the strategic collaboration we’ve had with Volvo. We’ve employed about 2,500 brilliant minds globally in new energy engineering to focus on the development of hybrid, pure electric, fuel cell and alternative fuel technologies,” he added.

In the Blue Geely Initiative announced in late 2015, the company aims to mass produce new energy vehicles by the year 2020, targeting a 90% sales rate for electrified vehicles. In the masterplan, 35% of the green cars will be full EVs, with the rest made up by hybrids and PHEVs.

Of the two new green variants of the Borui, An said. “These cars serve as a prelude of Geely’s entry into an age where new energy vehicles will dominate our roads. This year alone, we shall be launching a whole array of new energy models and in the not so distant future, all of our platforms and product series will be fully electrified.”

Design highlights include the Geely signature “expanding cosmos” grille – which represent the company’s expanding universe – and front/rear lamps with 3D graphics inspired by traditional Chinese fans and the twirl of a gymnast’s ribbon.

The cabin is rather spectacular. The main event is the Full Vision dashboard that was first previewed on the Emgrand Concept in 2015, now in a production car. Also included in the flagship model are Geely’s recently launched GKUI smart ecosystem and the Energy Hub, which offers wireless charging for mobile devices. The Borui GE PHEV and MHEV will be officially launched in China on May 28.

The Geely Borui would be a good base for a next-generation Proton Perdana, no? What do you think?

  • Geely Concept Icon unveiled at Beijing Motor Show

Geely Concept Icon unveiled at Beijing Motor Show

Geely is presenting a new concept car at this year’s Beijing Motor Show, which was developed at its design studio in Shanghai under the lead of Guy Burgoyne, vice president of Geely Design China. The company calls it the Concept Icon, and the design language you see here adheres to two main themes, namely “high tech” and “inspiring.”

“What is an icon?,” asks Burgoyne. “To some, an icon represents their generation and embodies the spirit of an era. Today, in the 21st century, the term icon has taken on a new meaning. It is where an application starts on a digital journey. We took all these meanings together and applied them into our mobility solutions,” he explained.

While it may take the shape of crossover, the concept’s upright contour gives it a blocky, almost 8-bit-inspired design. To match up with the minimalist nature of electronic gadgets these days, the exterior surfaces and graphics have been kept at a minimum.

Highlights include the use of infinity loops on the front and rear lights, and they can also be seen in other areas including the glass roof. The brand’s signature cosmos grille has also gone through a thorough minimalist makeover for a flatter look that still remains recognisable, although there is a screen accompanying it for displaying messages and images.

Opening the double clam shell doors, we have access to an interior that is simple in appearance but hides a number of technologies. The central binnacle blends in neatly with its woven surroundings, while a large central infotainment screen allows users to alter vehicle settings. Rear passengers meanwhile, can fiddle with individual rear screens for their own infotainment needs.

“A simplified interior also provided us with greater amounts of storage space, which proves to be useful as users today carry multiple devices on a daily basis. The Energy Hub floating console that was introduced in the Geely Bo Rui GE can be seen here, allowing users to wirelessly charge their devices on the go and exchange information via the in-car screens”, explained Burgoyne.

  • Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission debuts – built for China

Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission debuts – built for China

The Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission has been unveiled at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, and becomes the brand’s first electric car made in China for consumers in the country. The new electric vehicle will be one of 20 electrified models that Nissan plans to introduce over the next five years.

Despite its name, the Sylphy ZE is actually built upon the Leaf and shares the same 2,700 mm wheelbase with the hatchback. The design at the front is a combination of the facelifted US-market Sentra as well as the Leaf, including a distinct V-Motion grille with blue accents near the charging port. However, this is still a proper sedan in shape, with 510 litres of boot space available.

Nissan hasn’t revealed full details about the electric powertrain used here, but there is some information to be gained from the automaker’s press conference at the event. For starters, the Sylphy ZE has a 38 kWh battery, which is good for an all-electric range of 338 km following China’s standards. The unit is smaller than the Leaf’s 40 kWh unit that offers 400 km in Japan’s cycle and 378 km in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) on a single charge.

Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission debuts – built for China

The battery is positioned under the rear seats, and powers a 107 hp (80 kW) electric motor that drives the front wheels – the Leaf has a 148 hp (110 kW) e-motor. There’s no word on the performance capabilities of the Sylphy ZE, but expect it to be utilitarian enough for driving around a city like Beijing.

No photos of the car’s interior, but given its underpinnings, we reckon it should be a blend of the standard Sylphy and the Leaf, much like its face. Nissan also notes the cabin offers ergonomic heated seats and a range connectivity options, with Nissan Intelligent Mobility being another core feature.

For now, the Sylphy ZE is a model specific to China but it could be a precursor for another global market sedan EV that might join Nissan’s fleet in the future. The Sylphy ZE will go on sale later in 2018, where more information will then be made available.

  • Z177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan revealed in Beijing – alternate version for other markets in H2 2018

    Z177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan revealed in Beijing – alternate version for other markets in H2 2018

Well, here it is. This is the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan, which makes its official debut at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. The arrival of a sedan version of the A-Class has been heralded for some time ever since the Concept A Sedan was shown back in April last year.

First things first, the L in the name refers to the longer wheelbase found on this specific-to-China variant – a trait that is very much welcomed there. The official figure stands at 2,789 mm, or 60 mm more than the hatchback’s 2,729 mm, with most of it dedicated to the knee room for rear passengers.

As for the other dimensions, the A-Class L Sedan measures 4,609 mm long, 1,796 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall. While the width is the same as the hatchback, the sedan is 190 mm longer and 20 mm taller by comparison.

The longer tail does contribute to a boot space of 420 litres, which is 50 litres more than the 370 litres offered in the hatchback. No word on how much more knee room is provided, but it should be more than the hatchback. Of course, a standard-wheelbase A-Class Sedan will come with a set of different figures, and you can expect such a model in the second half of the year.

    Z177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan revealed in Beijing – alternate version for other markets in H2 2018

In terms of engines, the China-only sedan will be offered with a M282 1.33 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the states of tune – 134 hp and 161 hp – the latter with cylinder shut-off tech. Later on, a 2.0 litre four-cylinder powerplant will join the fray with 188 hp, but all engines are paired with a 7G-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard. As we don’t see a “4Matic” badge in any of the photos (all of which are of the A 200), we expect front-wheel drive to be offered as standard, with all-wheel drive a likely option for higher variants.

Design-wise, the front end of the A-Class L Sedan is almost identical to the hatchback, and features cues such as a diamond radiator grille with a single louvre, chrome pins and central star. Customers will get to choose between Sport Sedan and Sedan versions, the former with prominent creases on the bonnet.

Viewing the car from the side is where the difference in shape is most apparent, with a more rakish roofline leading to the boot as well as reshaped doors on the sedan. The two-piece taillights also follow a separate design from the hatchback, although they are reminiscent of the facelifted W176.

Other visible element include a small concave section on the bootlid that forms part of the lip spoiler, corner outlets and twin exhaust finishers. A number of wheel options are also available, ranging from 16 to 19 inches in size. Also something to note: rose gold is available as an exclusive paint finish for the Chinese market.

    Z177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan revealed in Beijing – alternate version for other markets in H2 2018

Unsurprisingly, the interior of the hatchback is replicated in the sedan as well, with the same layout of items. The dashboard is dominated by two 10.25-inch widescreen displays that are linked up to the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, which has been homologated for the Chinese market.

This includes support for voice recognition involving Chinese dialects and even the popular WeChatMy app. There’s even a navigation display function featuring augmented reality technology – Mercedes-Benz is the world’s first automaker to provide such a feature for the Chinese market.

Other familiar items include the design of the steering wheel with Touch Control, dedicated climate control switchgear and touchpad controller on the centre console. You’ll need to look really closely to spot the trim surrounding the air-con vents are of a different shape to those in the hatchback.

A range of driver assistance systems will also be offered, but the automaker didn’t provide the specifics. We reckon systems such as Distronic adaptive cruise control, Active Emergency Stop Assist and Active Lane Change Assist, Extended Active Brake Assist and Pre-Safe Plus will be on the menu.

    Z177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan revealed in Beijing – alternate version for other markets in H2 2018

The A-Class is an important model for Mercedes-Benz in China, as 40% of buyers of the W176 were first time car buyers. Other bits of trivia include the fact that 50% of buyers of the A-Class in the country were females. As a comparison, in Europe around four out of ten buyers of the A-Class are of the fairer sex.

The A-Class L Sedan will be produced exclusively at Beijing Benz, a joint venture between Daimler and BAIC Motor – a market launch for the model is set for the second half of 2018. Beijing Benz’s current portfolio includes the C-Class Sedan with short and long wheelbases, the E-Class Sedan with long wheelbase, the GLA, and the GLC.

As mentioned earlier, a version of the A-Class sedan tailored to the needs of customers outside China will be launched in the second half of the year. Show of hands, how many of you would welcome such a model in Malaysia?

  • Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury officially debuts in Beijing – four electric motors, 748 PS output

Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury officially debuts in Beijing – four electric motors, 748 PS output

This is the new Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, which celebrates its debut in Beijing as an all-electric crossover. According to Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler AG, the concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a sedan to produce what he calls an “ultra-modern SUV of three-box design.”

The shape is certainly eye-catching, with smooth surfaces that do not feature sharp edges to create what the company calls an “image of sporty elegance” – the vehicle measures 5,260 mm long, 2,110 mm wide and 1,764 mm tall. Influences from previous Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concepts are plain to see, most notably at the front grille with vertical slats.

The three-element headlamps flank said grille, and we also see a thin chrome strip at the top of the bonnet leading down to the three-pointed star ornament. Meanwhile, the lower apron hosts large air inlets with those in the centre sporting a Maybach-pattern mesh and chrome blades.

Moving towards the back, the three-part taillights reflect the design of the front headlamps, while the split rear window is another cue showcased by the brand. Large outlets are also seen in the back, along with a diffuser for the underride guard, which sports the same mesh pattern as the front.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury officially debuts in Beijing – four electric motors, 748 PS output

Other details include the machined aluminium running boards in the lower door area, thin side scuttles and a set of 24-inch turbine-look wheels. There’s also the trademark Maybach badge on the relatively upright C-pillars, and the red metallic finish you see is applied by hand in several coats.

Moving inside, the driver’s area and front cockpit are reduced to just the essentials – steering wheel, air-con vents modelled after the front grille, Widescreen Cockpit system with dual 12.3-inch screens and a touchpad controller.

The carmaker says the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is intended primarily for chauffeur-driven use, so attention was given to the rear passengers and their well-being. Its makers want it to be the “ultimate embodiment of a luxury dream automobile,” and as you can see, they clearly fulfilled that brief.

Firstly, the materials used are of the highest quality, with crystal white Nappa leather used for the seats, while a shade of brown with a light metallic finish adorns the instrument panel. These are joined by touches of rosé gold, crystal white and pearl grey all around the cabin, including the diamond stitching on the seats.

Between the two individual seats, there’s also a tea service integrated into a sculpted wooden tray made of ebony (also found in other areas of the cabin). Called “Magic Wood,” it houses a handmade fine china tea set, and can be electrically retracted into the console under a high-gloss black sliding cover at the press of a button.

That section is also heated, and allows for what the company calls “exquisite tea-drinking enjoyment while on the road.” It adds that “the philosophy of tea plays a key role in bringing body and mind into balance while discovering the path to inner calm and vitality.” Sounds fancy, and we reckon it should appeal to people in the market the concept is making its debut.

Before we forget, the luxury SUV also comes with four permanent-magnet synchronous motors providing all-wheel drive. The total system output here is 550 kW or 748 PS, and the motors are supplied from an 80-kWh battery mounted on the vehicle floor.

The claimed NEDC range is just over 500 km, and the SUV is limited to a top speed of 250 km/h. Recharging the battery is done via DC charging based on the CCS standard, and the system allows for fast-charging up to 350 kW. The carmaker says it takes just five minutes to have enough charge for an additional range of around 100 km, and you can even use induction charging.

  • Skoda Kamiq revealed – B-segment SUV for China

Skoda Kamiq revealed – B-segment SUV for China

Making its debut in Beijing is the new Skoda Kamiq, the third member of the carmaker’s SUV line-up for the Chinese market after the Karoq and Kodiaq. The Kamiq will also be present at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, before going on sale a few months later.

Like its siblings, the Kamiq’s styling cues include the familiar Skoda grille with vertical double slats, met by a slightly protruding bonnet. There’s also a small model badge just beneath the side mirrors, and the overall shape isn’t that far off from the bigger SUVs.

On the mention of size, the Kamiq measures 4,390 mm long, 1,781 mm wide and 1,593 mm high. As for the vehicle’s wheelbase, it measures 2,610 mm which is identical to a Honda HR-V. Skoda calls the Kamiq a “city SUV,” and it should rival B-segment models like the Hyundai ix25, Citroën C3-XR and Nissan Kicks as well.

Based on previous sketches, the SUV’s dashboard will be dominated by an eight-inch touchscreen sandwiched between a pair of air-con vents. Skoda says the speakers are installed at an angle for better performance and the seats come in a plaid pattern with 3D effect.

Connectivity is another important aspect of the Kamiq, as the primary target here are young, urban customers. Therefore, the infotainment system offers voice control from iFLYTEK, one of Asia’s leading providers of voice recognition based on artificial intelligence. Smartphones can also be connected via Apple CarPlay, Baidu Carlife and MirrorLink interfaces.

The Kamiq is powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine that produces 109 hp and 150 Nm of torque, transmitted via an automatic gearbox. Last year, Skoda sold 325,000 cars in China, which is significantly more than its second-biggest market, Germany, where it sold 173,300 units in the same period.

  • Volvo S90 Ambience Concept – a treat for the senses

Volvo S90 Ambience Concept – a treat for the senses

    Volvo S90 Ambience Concept

Volvo has unveiled its show car for the upcoming Beijing Motor Show, the S90 Ambience Concept. According to the Swedish automaker, the concept offers an “industry-first sensory experience that synchronises visuals, sound and scent to redefine in-car luxury.”

The car itself is based on the existing three-seat S90 Excellence that is sold in China, but the interior has been revamped to change the way you feel while you’re inside. You can do this by using a smartphone app to choose one of seven visual themes, each with their own accompanying synchronised audio and scent.

The available themes include Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest, Swan Lake, Archipelago and Rain. There is also a Nocturnal theme for resting and Freedom for a boost of fresh and uplifting energy.

Depending on which theme you pick, the appropriate visual element is then projected onto the car’s headliner, and audio is played through the Bowers and Wilkins sounds system, which has been upgraded to include small tweeters in the headrest.

For an even more immersive experience, one of four bespoke scents created by Byredo, is deployed from a portal that rises up from the centre console. All three elements combine to directly influence the occupants’ mood and well-being, as Volvo describes.

“The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses,” said Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars.

“We’re known for our human-centric approach to design and as an industry leader in advanced safety technology. Ambience reinforces this and shows our broader focus on human care, which starts with safety and also extends to general well-being,” he adds.

  • Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury leaked

    Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury leaked

Originally scheduled to debut at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept has been leaked online. As previously suggested, the vehicle does indeed take the shape of an SUV, although it doesn’t look like a preview for the next-generation GLS.

Nonetheless, it is still quite a sight to behold, with a front grille that is clearly inspired by the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concepts. Other similarities include the triple-element headlamps, side scuttles, C-pillar badges and a small split in the lower apron.

The rear is somewhat interesting to look at, whereby there is a boot lid rather than a liftgate normally associated with SUVs. The new Maybach concept also shares similar cues with the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 hardtop – taillights with three square elements, dual-window rear windscreen and emblems for the Maybach brand and model name (Ultimate Luxury in this case).

Moving inside, you are greeted by acres of quilted leather surfaces with touches of chrome and rose gold trim. The latter likely panders towards the audience in China where the concept will be revealed, and the same can be said about the built-in tea set in the rear centre console. There’s also touches of blue lighting accents and premium materials to further elevate the luxurious feel.

Should you prefer to be in the driver’s seat, there’s still plenty of opulence on show as well. The air-con vents adopt the same pattern as the front grille, and sandwiched between them are a pair of screens like what you’ll find in current Mercedes-Benz models.

Similarly, the touchpad controller and steering wheel also look pretty familiar, albeit revised to be more flamboyant in the concept. The centre console itself features what appears to be two grab handles that have switchgear placed between them, while additional stowage space is found just in front of the touchpad.

We still don’t know will power the luxury SUV concept, but we reckon it is likely an electric powertrain following the theme with previous Vision concepts. Quite the SUV then, don’t you think?

  • BMW Concept iX3 confirmed – official debut in Beijing

The BMW Concept iX3 will make its debut at the Beijing Motor Show later this week, with the German automaker releasing a teaser video ahead of the all-electric show car’s arrival.

In the short clip, we are first shown the kidney grilles of the current G01 X3, followed immediately by the one on the Concept iX3. As you can see, the latter is a single-piece unit that is reminiscent of what you saw with the i Vision Dynamics concept, and is likely a trademark look for upcoming BMW i models.

According to previous spyshots, the production version of the Concept iX3 could be based on the X3, albeit with their own unique styling cues. The mules that were sighted lacked exhaust tips and had charging ports, but looked largely identical to the standard X3.

For now, details about the concept’s electric powertrain remain a secret, although it is already known the iX3 will be a “Gen 4 battery electric vehicle” like the upcoming MINI EV. While the concept is set to debut very soon, the production version won’t be out before 2020. Other BMW i models in the works include the iNEXT in 2021 and i4 after that.

  • Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan shown – Beijing debut

    Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan shown – Beijing debut

We’ve been waiting for the debut of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan for some time now, ever since the W177 A-Class hatchback was shown at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Well, that day will soon be upon us as the more practical A-Class is set to debut at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show.

There’s more too, as CarNewsChina has uploaded a photo that supposedly shows the A-Class sedan in all its glory. The text on the number plate reads “A-Class L Sport Sedan,” which likely indicates this is an extended wheelbase version – a trend that is well received by customers in China.

Styling-wise, the A-Class sedan appears to be pretty similar to previous renderings that we reported on. The front is pretty much identical to the hatchback with an AMG Line kit, right on through to the B-pillars. Things start to deviate from the rear doors, which are likely redesigned to offer a larger aperture, along with the addition of a larger boot.

    Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan renders

Out of sight here is the vehicle’s rear, but based on previous spyshots and renders, we should expect a pair of angular, two-piece taillights and a more rounded bootlid instead of the sharp edged one on the Concept A Sedan preview car.

Expect the interior to mimic the A-Class hatchback as well, which should be offered with a variety of new technologies like high-definition screens and the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) interface.

According to the source, the A-Class sedan will be manufactured by Beijing Benz, a joint venture between BAIC Motor and Daimler AG – the company also assembles the V213 E-Class L and W205 C-Class L. Competitors for the sedan will include the BMW 1 Series Sedan and Audi A3 Sedan.

  • Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury teased

    Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury teased

Mercedes-Benz will reveal a new concept at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show and has dropped a new short video as well as sketch to go along with an earlier teaser it released. More importantly, the concept finally gets a name: Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury.

The company still won’t explicitly say what it is, and merely states the concept “shows how the typical strengths of an exclusive high-end saloon and an SUV can be combined.”

It has been rumoured that the concept will preview the next-generation GLS, albeit with plenty of luxurious items added befitting a Maybach model. Such a model will look to take on other luxury SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

    Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury teased

We’ll focus on the video first as it gives us a very clear look at the new Vision concept’s interior. Dimly lit as it may be, we can clearly see a high level of opulence here, with plenty of bright leather surfaces, chrome and rose gold trim, as well as elegant floral motifs scattered around the cabin.

There’s also plenty of blue lighting accents on show (like on other Vision concepts), including on the steering wheel which has been modified in look for the concept. Based on the attached sketch, a widescreen display will also be present as well. If it isn’t obvious already, there’s only space for four passengers, with a long centre console that runs from the front to the back of the second row.

We’ll know more about the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury later when it makes its official debut at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, so stay tuned.
