2008 Honda Accord Sedan Test Drive at Tochigi R&D

A group of Malaysian journalists visited the Honda R&D center in Tochigi, Japan during the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, courtesy of Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The R&D center visit was very interesting indeed, as we got to witness a real life crash test between the new 2008 Honda Accord and the new third generation Honda CR-V.

The main highlights of the R&D center visit for me were the test drives. You’ve already read about one of the cars I drove - the Honda FCX Concept, which has since entered limited production. The other car driven was the new 2008 Honda Accord, in both 2.4 liter and 3.5 liter guise.

The new 2008 Honda Accord looks nothing like an allegedly confused Hyundai in flesh. Think BMW and you’re more on the mark. The car generally looks very eye pleasing with the exception of the crease line on the side of the car - I can’t put my finger down on what’s wrong but I think the line curves in a strangle angle that doesn’t match the rest of the car’s mostly angular body. Styling is a subjective thing.

The test drive car interiors were done up in either a very aesthetically pleasing black, or beige. You sit lower in this new Accord, and the seating position is good. The car’s huge front seats are very comfortable as well and do alot to give the car’s interior a very luxurious ambiance for the driver.

At a glance, all of the in-car entertainment and climate control functions look very similiar to the previous model, but they appear squashed vertically to be more compact, and all of the controls have been pushed higher up the dashboard. This is presumably to reduce eye and hand movement when the driver needs to adjust controls while driving.

The new 2.4 liter engine puts out 177 horses, about 7 more than the Accord 2.4 facelift currently sold here in our market. It is very smooth, something that most manufacturers cannot lay claim to with their 4-cylinder engines. As our test drive was on a high speed oval, it is hard to say really how the car’s driveline would behave like on our local roads.

The Accord 3.5 liter V6 is delicious - floor it and the Accord rushes off from a stand still with urgency, but sadly if it comes to Malaysia that particular model wouldn’t just share similiar looks with a BMW - it would share a similiar price tag as well. The new 3.5 liter V6 features cylinder deactivation, and when its running on either 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder mode, a green ECO indicator will light up on the meter panel. This the only way for you to know that Variable Cylinder Management is active as the transitions between the cylinder modes are so smooth, you don’t feel anything.

Speaking of meter panels, I was disappointed that the new Accord’s meter panel doesn’t look as “grand” as its predecessor. There is just something about a huge self-illuminating speedo that lights up with crisp clarity during day or night that gives the car an upmarket feel to it, especially since the meter panel is what you’ll be looking at most of the time. The new Accord’s meter cluster consists of two prominent dials with silver rings around them - another homage to BMW?

The new 2008 Honda Accord deals with curves better than the current generation - there is not as much body roll, the steering has more weight, is faster and more responsive. Some of this enhanced driving dynamics are thanks to a lower center of gravity thanks to the 15mm lower floor and the lowering of components like the fuel tank. Again, it’s difficult to judge entirely how the car would act on a curvy B-road as the test track was a high speed oval.

Plenty of nice photos after the jump, including one of a crash test between the new 2008 Accord and the third generation Honda CR-V.

Honda Civic Type R Modulo Kit

Honda Civic Type R Modulo

Believe it or not, this overly busy looking ricey design is a kit from Modulo! Set to debut at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Salon, Honda has stripped the Civic Type-R Modulo down even more, with the entire interior replaced with carbon fiber wherever possible. Even the power window switches have been moved to the center area because the door panel has been replaced with a simple carbon fiber panel.

The famous double-tiered dashboard has been redesigned, with the rev counter now on the top deck and the speedo on the lower deck - basically they’ve swapped positions to suit a race track environment.

No other technical details on the car are available at the moment, but these product photos seem to reveal electronically adjustable dampers of which status is shown in an LCD display where the normal 2-DIN head unit is.

MUGEN kit for Honda Inspire (JDM US Accord)

MUGEN Honda Inspire

Honda tuning company Mugen has released this Mugen bodykit for the Honda Inspire, which consists of front and rear bumpers, side skirts, grille and a rear deck spoiler. Non-aesthetic improvements include Mugen suspension, brakes as well as a stainless steel exhaust system with dual mufflers.

It looks decent, with the exception of the huge tiang gol spoiler on the rear. Once the new Accord is launched, those who want to slap on this ready Mugen kit may want to omit the spoiler as it doesn’t exactly fit the image of the Accord well.

The Honda Inspire Modulo Touring Concept was showcased at the 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon. Nothing much is known about the concept right now - it’s mostly aesthetics I guess. The bodykit features new front and rear bumpers, side sills, a new grille, new headlamps, clear tail lamps, and new wheels.

The engine under the hood is the 3.5 liter V6 i-VTEC with Variable Cylinder Management as that is the only engine available in the Japanese market - expect some minor performance enhancements via a performance exhaust system.

Honda Inspire for the Japanese market unveiled!

Honda Inspire JDM

The US domestic market Honda Accord (and our Asian version as well) is known as the Honda Inspire in Japan, because the Japanese Accord follows the smaller and sportier European Honda Accord.

Soon after the US market Accord was unveiled, comes the Japanese 5th generation Honda Inspire. There are two variants - the 35iL and the 35TL, and both come powered by the new 3.5 liter i-VTEC V6 engine with cylinder deactivation. The J35A is a SOHC motor and produces 280 PS at 6,200rpm and 342Nm of torque at 5,000rpm.

This engine features a cylinder deactivation system called Variable Cylinder Management. It allows the engine to either run on the full 6 cylinders, or either 4 or 3 cylinders, depending on driving conditions. This means either a 2.3 liter V4 or a 1.75 liter inline-3 engine. A little green ECO light denoting economy mode will light up on the dashboard when VCM is activated.

The front of the new Honda Inspire is similiar to the US model Accord, featuring HID-equipped headlamps and a bold trapezoidal grille. The rear is slightly different, with two extra strips of red taillamp area on the bootlid stretching from the taillamps to the number plate holder. This is probably what our Asian Honda Accord’s rear end will look like, instead of the USDM rear end design.

Safety features include a standard airbag system which includes driver and front-passenger i-SRS airbags, front-seat i-side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The body uses Advanced Compatibility Engineering which ensures the passengers are protected during a collision. The top of the range 35iL model has Honda’s CMBS (Collision Mitigation Brake System) and E-pretensioners.

CMBS determines if there is a danger of a collision and alerts the driver. If a collision is imminent, CMBS activates the brakes to reduce speed automatically. E-pretensioners retract seatbelts automatically before a collision occurs.

The new Honda Inspire is bigger than its predecessor not only on the exterior but on the interior as well. or rear passengers, the tandem distance (a measure of the distance between front and rear seats) has been increased by 25mm and the floor lowered to provide a more natural seating position. Knee space has also been increased by 35mm, while the couple distance for front occupants has been widened by 40mm.

A thinner floor frame and slender fuel tank are employed along with optimized exhaust system layout to achieve a 15mm reduction in floor height. The trunk has been made 54mm longer to create a spacious 510 liter capacity.

New Honda Pilot prototype to debut at Detroit 2008

Honda Pilot Prototype

The mid-sized Honda Pilot shares its underpinings with the Acura MDX, and since the second generation 2007 Acura MDX was introduced late last year, it’s due time for a new Honda Pilot based on the second generation MDX.

A concept version of the next generation Honda Pilot will be making its debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January 2008. It will most likely continue the current Pilot’s feature list - 8-seater passenger capacity and an all-weather, medium duty off-road capability.

Expect the new 300 horsepower 3.7 liter i-VTEC V6 to be under its hood as well, just as with the second generation Acura MDX. Also expect the new V6 turbodiesel. Shown in this post is a concept sketch of the new Honda Pilot prototype.

JAS Motorsport Honda Civic Type R R3

Civic Type R R3

The new rally-prepared Honda Civic Type R R3 from JAS Motorsport is now ready for order and delivery. The rally car complies with FIA rally regulations for the 2.0 liter two-wheel drive class of cars, and it’s front wheel drive engine and gearbox is developed by JAS Motorsports in collaboration with Mugen.

The Honda Civic Type R R3 is based on the European Civic FN chassis. It has a TIG welded roll cage in Chrome-Molybdenum steel. The interior has plenty of carbon fiber all around, and the seats are SPARCO PRO WRC Racing seats made of fiberglass. These have SPARCO 6-point, 3″ seat belts designed for HANS use. The dash display has been replaced by a custom digital display with light blue backlighting.

The Mugen 2.0 liter engine makes 260 horsepower at 8,300rpm and features Pro Competition camshafts, upgraded pistons, a lightweight 4kg flywheel, competition exhaust pipe and cat converter, upgraded engine mountings, an oil cooler, an upgraded oil circuit, removed balance shafts, oil baffling in sump, a competition air filter, a carbon fiber air filter box and customised engine mapping. There is also an option for heavy duty forged racing pistons. The transmission is a 6-speed custom made sequential gearbox with an LSD and a twin disc ALCON clutch assembly. The car’s fuel tank has been upgraded to a 80 liter tank, as compared to the original 50 liter size.

The controversial torsion beam rear suspension setup still remains, but the car now has Eibach racing springs and Extremetech Racing shock absorbers which are three-way adjustable. All suspension rubber joints have been replaced by ball joints. The torsion beam has also been upgraded and has a stiffer anti-rollbar. The Type R R3 uses Brembo Racing 4-pot calipers for the 328×32mm front discs, and the rear discs are 278×6.5mm in size. All discs are mounted on floating disc-bells.

Honda Accord now comes with portable GPS

Honda Accord GPS

Buyers of the 7th generation facelifted Honda Accord between 1st December 2007 to 31st December 2007 will receive a GPS navigation system called the Gathers Honda Infotainment Navigation System. The “Infotainment” part of the name means the unit includes several non-navigation features like a Bluetooth handsfree, MP3 player, calculator, and a multiple time zone clock. The GPS unit is valued at RM2,300.

The touch screen GPS system is portable, which means you can move it to another car if you require. It comes with a leather case for this purpose. You can view road maps in either 2D or 3D, and the comprehensive map includes useful information like the location of petrol stations, restaurants, and hotels. There is a one time free map update.

From the user interface presented I think we can probably guess that it’s a Garmin-based device just like the Volvo Personal Navigator, which means that if it supports loading maps from SD cards, you could probably use the excellent free maps from Malsingmaps.
