Proton POWER OF 1 automotive showcase – five-day mega display of all things Proton at Bukit Jalil on March 14-18

Proton has announced that its largest ever outdoor showcase is set to take place next week at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. The POWER OF 1, as it’s called, will commemorate the company’s technology advancements, engineering achievements, innovation and motorsports success, among other things.

The five-day mega event, which runs from March 14-18, will be spread over an area of 35,000 sq metres at the stadium’s Car Park A, B and C, which has been transformed to accommodate a technology exhibition, sales and promotion area, as well as a mini circuit. The showcase will run from 10 am to 10 pm daily, and admission is free.

Supposedly, visitors will also be able to catch a glimpse of the upcoming P3-21A at the event. Over the five-day period, people will be able to watch teasers of parts of the car being put together in front of their very eyes, acccording to Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin.

The engineering and technology showcase will feature a number of interesting exhibits on the various technologies utilised to develop the safety, performance, styling and comfort of a Proton car.

Some of the highlights here include an engine “strip show,” where engineers will take apart and put back together an engine in 10 minutes. There’s also a car configurator visitors can experiment with, which will enable them to ‘design’ the car of their dreams.

Elsewhere, visitors will also be able to take a closer look at the award-winning Exora Range Extender Electric Vehicle, which won two awards at the Brighton to London Future Car Challenge last November.

For motorsports enthusiasts, there will be stunt driving and demonstrations by Lotus Cars Malaysia, as well as from the company’s performance arm, R3. Also scheduled to make a track appearance is the Lotus F1 car, which will be in town for the 14th running of the Petronas Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix.

Proton will also be organising an autocross and time attack using Proton and Lotus cars with the final race to be run on March 18. There’s also a specially-constructed mini circuit at the heart of the event site, where the public can catch Alister McRae demonstrating the power and performance of the APRC-winning Satria Neo S2000 rally car.

Those interested in purchasing existing Proton and Lotus cars can also enjoy the best deals ever during the POWER OF 1, with great deals to be had on selected models, valid only for the duration of the event.

In conjunction with the event, Proton will also be running an exclusive ‘Buy and Win’ contest, with the grand prizes of two I-Race Day tickets, which entitles the holders to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be an F1 driver for a day, under the Lotus F1 I-race programme.

There’s also a ‘SMS and Win’ contest, which has three Proton cars as grand prizes. Other attractive prizes include complementary tickets to the upcoming Petronas Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit, Proton merchandise and vouchers, and a Lotus track day experience.

The event, Syed Zainal added, is a tangible expression and experience of Proton’s ‘Committed to be Better’ brand promise. “This event is a way of saying thank you to Proton car owners, customers, and most importantly – all Malaysians, who are our most important stakeholders,” he said.

“We have come a long way since our inception, and would not be where we are today without the support of the public, whose continued encouragement had been instrumental to the success of the national car project.”

“This is something that we are proud to share with Malaysians, and it is our hope that after visiting the showcase, everyone will leave with a better understanding of everything that is Proton – how far we’ve come, and the journey that awaits us from now on,” he added.

Well, seems that more than 4,800 people have tried their hand at the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: The Sequel Challenge on the Castrol Malaysia Facebook page over the past two months. The online virtual race qualifying round recorded a total of 47,000 km run, working out to over 390,000 virtual laps raced and equivalent to 9,750 hours of gaming time.

The contest now moves into the second stage, a driving battle royale on March 16 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) to determine the ‘strongest’ Malaysian, who will then head on to Germany to tackle the legendary Nurburgring in a BMW M3.

The Castrol EDGE Experience Malaysia-Nurburgring Challenge will witness the 20 finalists undergo an advanced driver training course before battling it out in a BMW to find the winner, who will be set for a once in a lifetime experience tackling the Nordschleife.

“It has been an eventful two months and we’ve seen some amazing performances on the virtual race track, but now it’s time to move from virtual to reality to determine who will be the ‘strongest’ Malaysian to take on The Green Hell,” said Castrol’s marketing director for Malaysia Singapore & Philippines, Mark Ng.

The four-day trip is set to deliver memories that will stay with the winner for a lifetime. The showcase of course is the two-day driving experience that will see one power drifting, flooring it on the hot laps, weaving around the slalom course and finishing up with guided laps with BMW motorsport racers around the legendary Nurburgring. Stay tuned to find out who that lucky person will be.

Nissan Sylphy updated – two trim levels, plenty of new kit

Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has introduced the refreshed 2012 Nissan Sylphy. Nissan’s C-segment sedan is now available in two trim levels – 2.0XL and 2.0XV – revised styling and a longer equipment list.

On the looks front, there are new front and rear bumpers, a new chrome grille and revised lamp design at both ends. Five colour choices are available – Bronze Gold, Tungsten Silver, Sapphire Black, Twilight Grey and Brilliant White.

Both XL and XV specs come with a black interior theme (used to be beige) with fine cherry wood trim, silver-ringed meter design with Multi-Information Display, and a new head unit with MP3 and AUX input. In addition, the door mirrors can now be folded at the touch of a button, while the air-con system adds on a temperature display and automatic setting.

The XV adds on leather wrapped steering and audio controls. It also comes with Nissan’s intelligent key (i-Key) keyless entry and start system.

The highest spec car is equipped with bi-xenon projector headlamps with Active Front-lighting System (AFS) – the only car in its class to offer such a feature. The Sylphy 2.0XL Comfort is priced at RM114,880, while a mid spec 2.0XL Luxury that adds on V-Kool tint, leather and sat nav comes in at RM119,880. The 2.0XV Premium will cost you RM124,880. All prices are on the road including insurance.

Final E90 BMW 3 Series rolls out of Kulim plant

Time to bid farewell to the fifth-generation BMW 3 Series, from a local perspective. The final locally-produced E90, vehicle number 8,930, has rolled out of BMW Malaysia’s assembly facility in Kulim, Kedah, and brings to a close local assembly of the model.

The E90 was the first BMW to be locally assembled at the Kulim plant – production of the car began in 2006, first at the Associated Motor Industries (AMI) plant in Shah Alam, before moving to the company’s current premises in the Inokom Corporation Plant from July 2008. To date, a total of 10,743 E90s have been sold locally, of which the above number were locally-assembled units.

The final production schedule of the E90 paves the way for the introduction of the highly- anticipated sixth-gen F30, which is set to be introduced in Malaysia very shortly – the car has already been spotted around town, after all.

Petronas showcases Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 cars in a unique suspended display at the Dewan Filharmonik

If you’ve been at the foyer of the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas very recently, you’ve probably walked under the F1 display, where two Mercedes AMG Petronas racecars can be seen sitting suspended on a structure. It’s all part of the comms and promo activities for the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix.

The Suspended Formula 1 Cars Project, to give the display its name, has the two F1 cars mounted on a custom-built steel-frame structure. It took a team of 20 engineers and technicians exactly 14 days to fabricate, test and install it.

Check out the video by Petronas Motorsports on how the team got the cars up there. The display will remain in the lobby of the company’s concert hall for the duration of the 2012 F1 season, so be sure to keep an eye out for it the next time you’re thereabouts.

Shell Helix contest – 2012 edition takes you to Maranello

If the idea of winning an all-expense paid trip to Italy to visit Maranello, the home of Ferrari, sounds like music to your ears, then you’ll want to be reading on.

It’s called the Shell Helix Global Promotion, and a veritable basket of goodies awaits five lucky grand prize winners – the Italian job, in this case, isn’t just limited to Maranello, but includes shopping in Milan and catching the Italian Grand Prix at Monza as well.

The two-tier contest, which runs from March 15 to May 31, is open to customers who purchase a four-litre pack of Shell Helix Ultra fully synthetic motor oil or from the Shell Helix HX7 synthetic technology range, which includes the HX7, HX7 E and HX7 Diesel.

In the first tier, customers have to count the number of Shell Helix words in an image on the entry form and submit their entries at selected Shell stations, authorised workshops or by mail with proof of purchase.

The second tier will see 15 lucky finalists take part in the fun-filled Shell Helix Challenge in July, where the five eventual winners will then get to embark on a trip of a lifetime.

Last year, four lucky Malaysians were among 200 Shell Helix customers from more than 20 countries who had the privilege to enjoy the ‘fastest 48 hours of their lives’ in Abu Dhabi after winning the 2011 edition of the contest.

The programme included a VIP visit to the famous Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park, a ride on the world’s fastest roller coaster, the Formula Rossa; dinner in the desert and tickets to watch the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Well, this year’s programme sounds even more appealing, especially if you’re a Ferraristi! You can find out more about the contest here or by visiting your nearest Shell station or authorised workshop.

Tan Chong enters agreement to assemble Subaru vehicles

Tan Chong Motor Assemblies (TCMA) has entered into an assembly agreement with TC Subaru Sdn Bhd, which is a subsidiary of Tan Chong International Limited, the company handling Subaru in our region and beyond. This was announced by Tan Chong Motor Holdings, the owner of TCMA, in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

The agreement is for the assembly of passenger vehicles by TCMA for TC Subaru, and is effective from March 6, 2012 to December 31, 2013. This duration can be extended with a six-month notice. The installation of assembly infrastructure is at the cost and expense of TC Subaru. Not mentioned now, but it was previously revealed that the Subaru CKD programme will happen at Tan Chong’s Segambut plant in KL.

Nothing new here, merely a formalisation of the plans we broke to you last July, where Fuji Heavy Industres (maker of Subaru) inked an MoU with Tan Chong to make Malaysia the ASEAN production hub for Subaru. The model in question is the Subaru XV crossover, a raised C-segment hatchback with the brand’s famous Symmetrical AWD. Click here for our first drive story.

Production will start later this year, and the planned 5,000 units per year will be divided for sale equally between Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. To sell the cars, Motor Image is embarking on a big expansion plan in Malaysia with 18 outlets planned through 2013. This means that by 2014, Malaysia will have 20 Subaru outlets if all goes to plan.

Click here to read our exclusive interview with Glenn Tan, Executive Director of TCIL, where he talks about Subaru’s plans for the region, and Malaysia.

Mitsubishi Triton VGT launched in Kuching – we drive it!

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia officially launched the Triton VGT last Friday evening in Kuching. Held at the Spring shopping centre in Sarawak’s capital, the event was a great combo of lights and action, and the truck was put through some impressive live demos for mall-goers. How about the truck towing our 11,700 kg media bus with 10 hacks inside as a party trick, eh?

We’ve already posted up full details of the latest Triton variant, but here’s a recap. The Triton has been strengthened with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) engine and a five-speed automatic gearbox with Sports Mode. There’s also some new equipment and exterior enhancements to fortify the package.

With 178 PS, Mitsubishi is claiming the “most powerful in its class” title for now, but a main selling point is that the improved 350 Nm of torque is now available over a broad range – 1,800 to 3,500 rpm, to be exact. This, plus the extra ratio and manual gear selection, significantly improves the RM106k Triton’s case, as we found out driving it around Kuching.
