BMW and Mercedes sell 1.46 mil and 1.16 mil vehicles in 2010 – up by 13.6% and 15.3% respectively

While Malaysia proved to be a good stomping ground last year for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, with a record year being posted by both, the larger scope also had both German carmakers going great guns in 2010. Globally, both companies did very well – BMW’s group sales went up by 13.6% last year, with worldwide sales of its BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars totalling 1.46 mil, up from about 1.29 mil the year before.

The BMW brand accounted for more than 1.22 mil of the total, which is a 14.6% increase from 2009. Mini went up by 8.1% to 234,175 and Rolls-Royce managed to sell 2,711 cars, an impressive 171% jump.

While group sales increased in almost all markets, China spearheaded the growth, pitching in with 168,998 cars sold there last year, an increase of 86.7% year on year. In the US, sales were up by 9.9% to 265,757 vehicles delivered. Germany remained the largest market for the brand, though only by a shade – sales went up by 3.1% to take the number to 266,009.

The company says it expects to do even better by selling a record number of vehicles in 2011, hoping to exceed 1.5 mil in sales volume this year.

As for Mercedes-Benz, its worldwide passenger cars sales rose 15% in 2010 to 1.167 mil units, from 1.01 mil the year before. In the US, 216,400 cars were sold, a 14% increase over 2009′s 190,600 units, while in Germany, Benz sales last year attained a comparative level to that in 2009 – 265,000 cars in 2010 to 265,500 units in 2009.

In China, sales more than doubled – deliveries for 2010 in China totaled 148,400 passenger cars, or a 112% increase from 70,100 units in 2009. High growth rates were also achieved in other markets – India reached a record level of 5,800 units sold, up by 80% over the previous year, while Russia saw a 64% jump to 19,700 units. Adding in the 97,500 units of the smart fortwo sold globally last year, group sales totaled 1.265 mil cars.

Mercedes-Benz confirms SLS AMG E-Cell series production

Just about everything is going down the electric path, commercially speaking – the next up to bat is the SLS AMG E-Cell. Mercedes-Benz confirmed in Detroit that it would be putting the car into series production, though it’ll be a little while before the car hits the showrooms – it’s due out only in 2013.

The battery-electric drive super sports car, powered by an electric motor at each wheel and a 400-volt, 48 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, develops 526 hp and 880 Nm of torque, and does the 0-100 kph sprint in 4.0 secs, not far off the petrol 563 hp V8 SLS’ 3.7 secs.

Among the changes from the petrol variant, besides the power and drive trains, are improved aerodynamics and a multi-link suspension with push-rod dampers in place of the double wishbones of the former, due to space constraints brought about by the motors.

A record year for both BMW and Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia

Well, it looks as if the premium segment passenger car market in the country is well and truly alive, if the numbers are anything to go by. Both BMW Group Malaysia and Mercedes-Benz Malaysia have just released their 2010 sales figures, and both German brands have returned record performances.

Last year, BMW Group Malaysia sold a grand total of 4,509 vehicles in the country, consisting of 4,006 BMW vehicles, 222 Minis and 281 Motorrads compared to 3,990 vehicles nationwide in 2009 – these being 3,564 BMW vehicles, 201 Minis and 225 Motorrads.

Aside from registering record performances for the current variants of the 3 Series and 7 Series, the successful year was also achieved through the introduction of several new key models such as the new F10 5 Series, X1, X5, S1000RR Superbike, the new Mini Cooper range as well as the significant milestone of local assembly operations for the X1 at the company’s assembly facility in Kulim, Kedah, the first new BMW model series to be assembled in the country in 27 years.

Meanwhile, the improved economic climate in 2010 helped the Malaysian automotive industry attain sales figures achieving pre-downturn levels, and Mercedes-Benz Malaysia was another company which benefited from this upswing, closing the year by surpassing the 5,000 premium passenger cars mark for the first time in Malaysia.

Sales improved by an impressive 28.2% from the year before, with 5,003 passenger car units sold compared to 3,903 in 2009. In total, with commercial sales thrown in, the company registered 6,970 vehicles delivered, surpassing the previous best of 6,146 in 2008.

The main performers in the passenger car segment was led by the ninth-generation W212 E-Class, with 2,152 units sold, an increase of 75.2% over the previous year; of this, 1,112 were of the locally-assembled E 200 CGI Elegance Blue Efficiency that was introduced in January last year. This was followed by the W204 C-Class, which registered 1,956 units, up 9.4% from 2009′s 1,788 units.

First shots of new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe leaked!

These are the first leaked photos of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, which will replace the CLC-Class. The CLC-Class might have had a new name but it was in fact a reskinned last generation C-Class Coupe updated to look similar to the W204.

Though it shares a somewhat similar “half moon” roofline to the CLC-Class, the profile of the new C-Class Coupe is much more coupe-like thanks to a more substantial boot while the CLC-Class was more of a hatchback. The front of the new C-Class Coupe is similar to the new W204 facelift but the rest of the body is unique.

The interior is also inspired by the new W204 facelift, but we can only see the front passenger area for now – perhaps the rear will feature two individual seats rather than a single bench? You’ll also notice that the C-Class Coupe has to make do with having a B-pillar, something that Merc coupes traditionally do not have.

Mercedes-Benz B 55 – 388 hp V8 and rear-wheel drive!

Imagine a Mercedes-Benz B-Class with rear-wheel drive and a 388 hp 5.5 litre V8 shoehorned into it. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your hands on one – the B 55 is an one-off example built by trainees at Merc’s Rastatt plant as a means of showing what can be done if you set your mind to it.

The car was built by a team of twelve second-year and third-year trainees specialising in production mechanics and automotive mechatronics, led by foremen Andreas Wurz from the technical vocational training department and Matthias Rieger from the electrics/electronics installation section.

The design evolved on the basis that the spatial concept of the B-Class was to remain unchanged, with minor indications of the conversion work from an exterior point of view, though the interior was to be upgraded in line with the new vehicle class being aspired to. Most importantly, the vehicle would have to be suitable for day-to-day driving.

The donor car came in the form of a B 200 CDI which had been delegated to the training workshop for learning purposes. As the trainees completely disassembled the car, Wurz went in search of a suitable engine and found what he was looking for, a 5.5 litre V8 with 388 hp and 530 NM of torque. This was transplanted into the B-Class together with a seven-speed automatic transmission and the engine control unit.

The V8 power unit fitted amazingly well, and the team was even able to use the original engine mounts. The ECU also proved to be quite a headache, as it had to be reprogrammed only to process signals from the driven rear axle, and there were serious problems with the steering, but a number of modifications cleared that hurdle.

Going with rear-wheel drive meant getting a suitable rear drive axle, and it emerged that the rear axle of an older W 210 series E-Class would be a very good geometrical fit. Wurz and his colleagues designed a subframe, and extensive forming and welding work allowed the bodyshell to receive the new rear axle. The propshaft of the E-Class also fitted into the B-Class with no further modifications, elegantly concealed within the sandwich floor.

The exhaust system was a clever combination of various replacement part items, and took the form of a twin-pipe system emerging at the centre of the rear end. For the brakes, the team also found the right stuff in the replacement parts catalogue, in the form of the C32 AMG’s system.

As for wheels, the B 55 sits on five spoke design 18-inch AMG sports wheels with 235/40 front and 255/35 rear rubbbers – the maximum steering angle at the front axle was limited to suit. The team also replaced the suspension, installing a K&W coilover system.

For the interior, friends from the training workshop at the Sindelfingen plant provided Alcantara linings for the A, B and C-pillars as well as a roof liner in the same, luxurious material. The seats in a leather/Alcantara combination were fitted by Johnson Controls specialists located on-site in Rastatt. The plant’s paint shop provided the finishing touches – the white car has dark-painted radiator louvres and smoked headlamp lenses, offering very little indication of the demon concealed beneath the car’s bonnet.

At 1,620 kg, the weight of the B 55 is only around 180 kg heavier than the original car, and while no measurements have been taken yet, the Rastatt team feels that the car should manage a 0-100 kph sprint time of under six seconds.

W204 Mercedes-Benz C-Class gets big facelift for 2011

The W204 Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift comes right on schedule, roughly mid-way through its typical 7 year lifecycle that started in early 2007. Visitors to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show next year will be able to catch the new W204 facelift for the first time in metal at the show grounds but for the rest of us, these photos will have to be suffice until Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launches the update.

The front end features an updated design including restyled headlamps, hood, and bumpers. The front end looks quite aggressive especially in the darker colours as a large amount of the front bumper has been dedicated to air intake grilles, which seem bigger vertically now as well.

The headlamps are not merely changes on the internal design – the whole shape is different and they’re now an L shape similar to those found on the SL-Class. Revisions on the tail end are not as drastic as before, but the tail lamps do get a new design and LED illumination to match the LED daytime running lights up front.

Top: new interior, Bottom: pre-facelift interior

The interior is completely different – the new C-Class gets a new dashboard that mimics that found in the W212 E-Class. The area that contains the COMAND screen now appears as an extension of the instrument cluster area, which is a very big change from the previous COMAND screen hidden behind an opening.

The multi-info display screen in the middle of the speedo is now of a higher resolution and features colour. Various buttons have also been rearranged and I’m liking the look of the new interior so far from the photos at least, much better than the pre-facelift.

There’s also much more area on the dash that Mercedes-Benz has now dedicated to showing off trim pieces, compared to the pre-facelift design which was quite bare especially in front of the passenger seat.

Look after the jump for a full hi-res gallery of the W204 facelift.

AMG – official car partner for the Ducati MotoGP Team

AMG’s sponsorship of the Ducati MotoGP Team marks the first step in a new joint-marketing journey. I guess the two companies think their target customers are quite alike – which pretty much can be summarized in a few words – rich men who love speed.

“I am very pleased that we are able to announce our strategic cooperation with Ducati today. AMG and Ducati ideally complement each other, as both companies share the same values: racing as the driving passion, and high performance plus exclusivity as the central brand messages of both AMG and Ducati. This long-term cooperation will help us to jointly access new customer groups,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“I am especially proud to have AMG as one of our sponsors for the MotoGP Team. I am also very pleased that our joint marketing activities are well under way. In AMG we have found a partner who perfectly reflects our brand values of high performance, motorsport, excitement and our sense of unmistakable style and design,” said Gabriele del Torchio, President and CEO of Ducati.

During selected AMG events, participants will be able to test ride Ducati motorcycles, and Ducati customers will similarly have the opportunity to try out the latest AMG high-performance cars at events. Joint events are planned for the members of the AMG Private Lounge, in which more than 13,000 AMG customers worldwide are registered.

What do you think – are Ducati riders more similar to AMG customers or BMW M customers? Not that such a marketing partnership would ever happen – BMW has their own Motorrad bikes to accompany their M vehicles, and that includes the new S 1000 RR!

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia introduces R-Class facelift

merc r 300 1

How time flies – it has been four years since Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launched the R-Class here, and that timeframe can only mean one thing: a facelift.

So here it is, in R 300 L form, what MBM tags the “new-generation R-Class.” The vehicle, which was introduced earlier this week, arrives on these shores bearing a new face and assortment of refinements and features, as would be be expected in a facelift job.

merc r 300 3

The front section has been completely reworked, with a new, horizontally structured bonnet lending the car better width. Also new are the vehicle’s wings, radiator grille and surround, and the headlamps and bumpers (with chrome underguard) have also been completely redesigned. As with current fashion, the R-Class gets integrated LED daytime driving lights slapped on it.

Continuing on the exterior revisions list are modified exterior mirror housings and a new wheel design, and at the rear gets a new bumper covering, modified tail lamps and integrated tailpipe trim.

merc r 300 4

Inside, the US-made seven-seater gets new materials and colour combinations, and new to the standard equipment list is a rear seat entertainment system, with two 8-inch LCD screens mounted behind each of the front seat head restraints.

The R 300 L features the M272 3.0 litre V6, the same as found in the C 300 AMG, so it’s 231 hp at 6,000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm for this one too. The second-generation 7G-tronic box on this one features new bearings and couplings, and operates with different oil pressures.

merc r 300 5

The tranny also has a new torque converter with a slip-reduced lock-up clutch for minimal take-off lag, and the unit features standstill decoupling, which reduces transmission input torque in Drive during idling. The slip-controlled clutch is engaged as soon as the driver releases the operating brake, ensuring no delay when the vehicle moves off.

Elsewhere, the R 300 L has Airmatic suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) fitted as standard, and besides the host of Merc driver assistance technologies (Linguatronic, Parktronic, Pre-Safe, Thermotronic) on call, there’s stuff like Blind Spot Assist, which makes changing lanes significantly safer.

merc r 300 2

The R 300 L is available in two versions – there’s the one with 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, and then there’s the sportier version equipped with 20-inch 5-spoke AMG alloy wheels, and these go for RM470,888.00 and RM478,888 respectively. If you prefer a R 350, well, that one’s available on order too.

Mercedes-Benz C300 with AMG sports package launched!

benz c 300 0

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced another locally-assembled W 204 C-Class model, in this case the range topping C 300, and it’s the first ever 3.0 litre displacement C-Class to be done here.

This one, in Avantgarde trim, comes replete with an AMG sports package, and can be identified externally by its twin exhaust tailpipes besides its variant badge. Aside from that, the exterior is accentuated by front and rear aprons and side skirts.

benz c 300 1

It’s powered by the M272 3.0 litre V6 pot, which offers 231 hp at 6,000 rpm and 300 Nm at 2,500-5,000 rpm, mated to a 7G-tronic seven-speed tranny. Performance figures for the car include a 246 kph top speed, a 7.2 secs 0-100 kph sprint time and a claimed combined fuel consumption of 9.4-9.6 per 100 km.

Going the AMG route gets the car a lowered suspension featuring shorter springs and thicker stabiliser bars, and this translates into the C 300 sitting 15 mm lower than the C 200 CGI Elegance. You also get perforated front brake discs and sporty looking brake calipers to boot.

benz c 300 2

Besides the sports suspension, the car – which goes for RM320,888 – also gets 18-inch AMG alloy wheels with mixed size tyres, in this case 225/40 series fronts and 255/35 rears.

Other interior components of the AMG Sports Package include a three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles, brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs as well as floor mats with AMG lettering.

benz c 300 3

MBM introduced the car in Sepang, towards the end of its latest intallment of its Mercedes-Benz Driving Experience program. The limited drive time involved intimated that it’s a tidy enough offering, and for sure it showed up the C 200 K’s that were also doing track duty to be anaemic in comparison, though you wouldn’t have to be a genius to figure that one out. Hopefully, a proper road test in the near future will show what the C 300 Avantgarde AMG is really made of.

Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI – first 4-cylinder S-Class

For the first time in 60 years since the history of the flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it will be available with a 4-cylinder engine. The first ever 4-cylinder S-Class model will be the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI, using their new 2.2 litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine making 204 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. That’s probably more than enough torque to move the large luxo-barge around – it’s definitely more than the petrol-powered baseline S300 that’s sold here in Malaysia.

There are currently no Mercedes-Benz diesels officially on sale in Malaysia, and I think the new “250 CDI” engine is officially incompatible with our Euro 2M diesel fuel, since the C250 CDI test unit that was available only to selected media to drive earlier in the year used fuel that was specially imported from overseas.

The S250 CDI will also get auto stop-start technology, and combined with the turbodiesel engine it is rated to achieve a combined fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100km and output CO2 of 149g/km, which Mercedes-Benz claims is the first vehicle in its class to be able to hit CO2 emissions of lower than 150g/km. 0 to 100km/h is reached in 8.2 seconds.

And what are the company’s rivals doing? BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said there are no plans at the moment for a 4-cylinder 7-Series, even saying at last month’s Paris 2010 show that he likes selling 7-Series with 6 and 8 cylinder engines. BMW plans to offer “electrification” of the existing 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines instead, which probably means some kind of hybrid solution.

Audi does have a 4-cylinder A8 in the plans but it involves a gasoline engine (probably Volkswagen Group’s widely used 2.0 TSI engine) instead of Mercedes-Benz’s turbodiesel approach.
