Chevrolet Spark with 1.4 turbo used as WTCC pace car

You can now catch the spunky new Spark at the World Touring Car Championship. It will actually be the pace car for the event, very much like the 500 horsepower Mercedes SLS is the pace car for Formula 1 races, but with alot less grunt of course.

The Spark will be equipped with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder Ecotec capable of producing a respectable 140 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque, similiar to the one used in the US market Cruze. This is a big difference from the standard Sparks on offer with their minimalist 1.0 and 1.2-litre engines that produce 67 and 80 horses respectively.

Look out for the new pace car at the WTCC race in Zolder on the 19th and 20th of June. It will temporarily be covered in the red design that you see in the picture. A permanent design will be decided through a contest for young artists held throughout Europe. Thus you might even see a design similar to that of Jeff Kooks BMW M3, if the winning design is zany enough.

Chevrolet fronts a Cruze in the WTCC and is top of the Constructors Championship with its driver Yvan Muller, who is top of the leader board as well. Away from the WTCC, Chevrolet will be entering the 24 hours of Le Mans with the Corvette C6.R GT2 and as the designation of the car implies, it will be taking part in the GT-2 category. The Corvettes will be driven by Magnussen-O’Connell-García and Gavin-Beretta-Collard.

The Cruze was recently launched in Malaysia and will feature the 1.8 litre Ecotec engine. It will be interesting to see if they plan to add the Spark to the Malaysian line up, as well as a 1.4 turbo Cruze as available in the US. What do you think?

Honda Malaysian Racing Team heads for the Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race

The Honda Malaysian Racing Team have officially announced their participation in the 11th Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race that will be held at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday, August 8th 2010. The team will be competing in the 12-hour endurance race which starts at midnight and will have a whole host of challenges to overcome such as the tropical heat and humidity.

Thus it’s only right that they front an experienced group of drivers and that’s exactly what they have done in the form of Eddie Lew Kar Wai, Aaron Lim and Rueben Wong. Returning with them is the Honda Type R that was used last year along with the 22 members of the HMRT from Honda Malaysia.

Last year the HMRT team managed to achieve a podium finish in second position for the Class A2 and have plans to do better this year. This will be the 8th year that HMRT is participating in the MME race and HMRT’s objective is to instill “Honda racing DNA” into its associates and create a platform which allows local talents to thrive and to build up local team’s expertise in motorsports.

“I am very proud to witness the improvement of the HMRT from a team guided by MUGEN to today’s fully Malaysian team. Our local Honda associates demonstrate commendable passion and commitment in local motorsports to build up their skills and knowledge, and to support each other towards a victorious MME race 2010,” said Mr. Toru Takahashi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia who is also the HMRT Team Principal.

“Over the past few years, HMRT gradually became more independent from the guidance and supervision of MUGEN from Japan. Today, the team is confident enough to manage on their own. This in itself is a significant achievement and a big motivation for the team. This is also the ultimate objective of HMRT – to train and build up the skills of local talents to thrive in the motorsports and automotive arena. This year, 11 members from last year’s team returned to HMRT to lead in different divisions and to transfer their skills and knowledge to the other new HMRT members,” added Takashi.

“One of the biggest factors in helping us achieve 2nd position last year was good communication amongst the team members and great teamwork. No one is above anyone else. We all work together towards the one single goal. I am the fuel man leader for HMRT this year. My most important responsibility is to motivate the new team members and familiarize them with the job. I will also share with them what we learnt last year and how we can improve for this year. I sincerely hope that HMRT can win this year and learn from last year’s mistakes, focus and improve the weaknesses to ensure zero mistakes during the race,” said Muhd Faizul, a senior HMRT member.

Aznom and Romero Ferrari go to work on the Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is known by many for its sturdy design and excellent off road capabilities. Relatively unchanged since the 1980s, it remains a firm favourite for the military and off road enthusiasts. Two Italian tuning firms have joined forces to give this British 4×4 a make over.

Aznom is one of the two companies involved and are known for their touch up of the Mini Clubman S called the Chateau. Covered in Brown paint with wooden teak-like accents the car looked unique. The other is Italian tuning house Romeo Ferraris which in this case played with the Land Rover Defender’s 2.4-litre turbo diesel four cylinder engine that now produces 152 hp.

Put in charge of the aesthetics, Aznom went on to add a matte two-tone white and black paint job while the front and rear bumpers have been replaced with carbon fibre. Red stripes add a splash of vibrant colour to the mix. The 4×4 will sit on anthracite-finished wheels with Kumho Road Venture tyres.

Inside, the theme seems to be focused on sporting design as it’s covered in Alcantara upholstery, carbon fibre on the interior trim as well as the steering wheel, and also features two-tone tanned Sparco bucket seats.

A different approach to Defender design, I don’t see many loyal Land Rover customers getting out their chequebooks, though it might attract a whole new generation of followers.

Audi sweeps Le Mans title from Peugeot this year

There must be shouts of joy coming from the Audi factory as the Audi R15 TDI cruised to take first, second and third place at the 2010 Le Mans 24 hours endurance race. This will be Audi’s ninth win at the 8.4 mile circuit, but they still have some way to go before being able to topple Porsche’s record of 16 wins.

Drivers Timo Bernhard, Mike Rockenfeller and Romain Dumas were greeted by a chequered flag at the end of their grueling intensive race, completing 397 laps. They were followed by the other Audi cars of Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer a lap behind, while the Audi of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Dindo Capello were 3 laps behind.

All four Peugeot cars, who by the way were the firm favourite to win this year and secured the top four spots at qualifying, ran into car problems during the course of the race. This gave the Audis the chance to reclaim victory from the Pugs who won the event in 2009.

The surprise of this year’s event was the crash of 1992 Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell in the 17th minute of the race. The 56 year old entered the race with his sons Greg and Leo in a Ginetta Zytek. The car spun and hit the guardrail at the entrance of the Mulsanne Straight. Mansell was taken to hospital but escaped without serious injuries.

The quote ‘it’s never about winning it’s how you play the game’ springs to mind when describing the teams within Le Mans, as even completing such an event is a reward in itself. In the end Audi’s patience and reliability put the team ahead of the faster Peugeot.

McLaren scores yet another 1-2 victory, this time in Canada!

McLaren has pretty much established itself as the team to beat at this point of the season with yet another 1-2 victory. Lewis Hamilton led team mate Jenson Button across the finish line at the eventful Canadian GP in Montreal, after doing the same two weeks ago in Turkey. This 1-2 victory is McLaren’s third this season and both of its drivers were joined by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in third place on the podium.

Both the Red Bulls failed to make it onto the podium but they finished just outside of it with Sebastian Vettel’s fourth and Mark Webber’s fifth. At one point Webber was leading the race and looked good for a race win but had to bow down to McLaren’s superior performance and race strategy. Nico Rosberg managed to finish in sixth for Mercedes and was closely followed by Robert Kubica of Renault. Toro Rosso managed to collect some valuable points with Sebastien Buemi’s eight place finish.

It is also a good day Vijay Mallya and his Force India team as both of his drivers finished in the top ten. Vitantonio Liuzzi finished in ninth ahead of team mate Adrian Sutil. In fact both drivers managed to push 7-times World Champion Michael Schumacher out of the point-paying top ten. The Mercedes driver had a bad qualifying yesterday as he only managed 13th spot.

However at the start of the race he managed to get up to eight place and was running strong. Unfortunately after making a pit stop earlier in the race he had a tussle Kubica and was forced to pit again. That pretty much ruined his race. Further down the field Lotus’ Heikki Kovalainen finished the race in 16th ahead of Renault’s Vitaly Petrov. Hispania’s Karun Chandhok settled in 18th followed by Virgin’s Lucas di Grassi. On the contrary to the expectations of many, only few drivers failed to finish the race. They include Timo Glock from Virgin, Jarno Trulli from Lotus (reason of retirement unknown at this point), Pedro de la Rosa from Sauber, Hispania’s Bruno Senna and lastly Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi.

The 2010 Canadian GP kept its promise of becoming a spectacular race filled with entertaining events, although the Safety Car was not deployed at all. At the start of the race almost everyone had clean starts but Felipe Massa and Liuzzi came together and both drivers had to pit but managed to continue racing. Kobayashi was the first to retire as he became victim to the Champion’s Wall on Lap 1. Some drivers had to make early pit stops as the track wasn’t kind on tires and at one point both Hamilton and Alonso went into the pits together and it was Alonso who came out in front. Both were side by side while exiting the pits but managed to keep their front wings clean. By Lap 10 it was Vettel who was leading followed by Webber, Schumacher, Buemi, Alonso, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Button, Kubica and Sutil.

After the Red Bulls made their stops it was Hamilton, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Webber and Kubica who were in the top six. Many laps later the top runners made their pits stops again but Webber stayed out and but by about Lap 50 Hamilton managed to overtake the Australian, who dived into the pits moments later. There was also an incident that involved Kubica and Sutil when the former attempted to make a pit stop.

Kubica overtook Sutil on the inside right before heading into the pits on the back straight. That move was a very dangerous move and the stewards acknowledged this hence an investigation will be carried out after the race. By Lap 53 Hamilton, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Webber, Kubica, Rosberg, Schumacher, Buemi and Nico Hulkenberg from Williams were running in the top ten.

A while later Alonso lost his second place to Button while trying to overtake a back marker (Karun Chandhok) and he failed to snatch it back. Overall it was a very interesting race and although mid-race refueling is banned this year, the drivers still had to make multiple pitstops for fresh tires. There were many times when positions were jumbled up, as different drivers were suffering from different levels of tire degradation, so it was hard to predict their stops.

Today’s 1-2 victory propelled Hamilton into the lead in the Driver’s Championship with 109 points. Button is close behind with 106 points while Webber is in third with 103. Alonso’s third place pushed him up to fourth with 94 points, ahead of Vettel with 90. McLaren has increased it’s lead in the Constructor’s Championship with 215 points, followed by Red Bull with 193 and Ferrari with 163. Formula 1 will now pack it’s bags and head to Valencia for the European GP on June 27th.

Proton Exora with trade plate and bodykit spotted!

This Proton Exora was spotted by reader Suthesh somewhere near Seremban. The tradeplate number of B2646A belongs to Proton as it was spotted before on a Proton Exora prototype that we regularly saw roaming the streets of the Klang Valley before the vehicle was launched.

At first glance this Exora just looks like a regular Exora but look closely and you can see that there are some cosmetic changes. The front bumper has some modifications to it – it has a chrome surround around the fog lamps and a thin horizontal chrome piece filling up the gap in the bumper area where the fogs are located. There’s also a bumper lip. This is the actually the exact same design that is found on the Proton Exora Prestige.

This Exora’s alloy wheel is also different, featuring a 10 spoke design instead of the Exora’s standard 5 spoke wheels. There’s actually some side skirts here but they’re a little hard to see because they’re black in colour which is a contrast against the Exora’s white body. Perhaps they haven’t been painted yet.

The bodykit treatment continues to the rear. This might just be a bunch of Proton staff traveling long distance on a work related trip on a random Exora in their fleet, but wishful thinking wants me to believe there’s a turbocharged engine under that hood.

Also, it would be nice if Proton release a version of the Exora with this bodykit we see here. This will allow them to gain from some of the money flowing to aftermarket bodykit suppliers – there are a few out there for the Exora already. Perodua has the Alza Advanced which seems to have buyers, so it would be nice for Proton to have an Exora SE as well :)

Look after the jump for a high resolution gallery of the spy pics. Nice work Suthesh!

Ford Mondeo updated with 203 PS EcoBoost turbo engine!

The Ford Mondeo has quite a nice chassis but that 2.3 litre 4-potter engine doesn’t do it justice – it doesn’t nearly have enough bite as it should, though that 6-speeded does help a little. Enter the new Ford Mondeo powered by Ford’s EcoBoost, featuring a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine producing 203 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1,750rpm to 4,500rpm. This brings the Mondeo’s 0 to 100km/h acceleration time to 7.9 seconds which should be quite fun, and instead of the 6-speed automatic found in the Mondeo sold here in Malaysia, this new engine is mated to a 6-speed wet dual clutch Powershift transmission!

Ford’s press releases compares the new Mondeo with EcoBoost and Powershift to the Mondeo 2.3 and the word “previous” is used with the 2.3 which leads me to believe that the new 2.0 litre turbo has replaced the 2.3 litre. Will Sime Darby Auto ConneXion replace the Mondeo 2.3 here with a Mondeo 2.0 turbo when the time comes? If that really happens they really have to start thinking about adding ESP to the car’s spec list as not many will be used to 300Nm of course accessible so instantaneously across the rev range. They did the same with the Focus TDCi – it has ESP to help cope with the high torque while the petrol Focus does without it.

Ford has also given the Mondeo an updated version of the 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel engine and it is available in three different stages of tune – 115 PS, 140 PS and 163 PS. The engine gets new solenoid fuel injectors with 8 smaller holes that work at 2,000 bar for improved fuel atomisation, compared with the former six-hole injectors and lower 1,800 bar pressure. A Mondeo TDCi is not available in Malaysia as of now but with Ford selling a Focus TDCi, why not a Mondeo TDCi as well?

Morgan teases EvaGT 2+2 coupe due for Pebble Beach

Morgan is a British automotive brand that started out in the late 1950’s when rationing was highly prevalent due to the Second World War. The company had to be innovative in the design of their cars. Because steel was such a commodity, they used lightweight aluminium in the design of the bodywork.

Aerodynamics played an important part as well and this was thanks to the engineers who worked on aircrafts during the war effort which was integrated in to the design of their cars. They also adopted the use of a smooth “in-line” straight six cylinder engine as it provided better reliability and comfort for long distance journeys.

Morgan is known for machines such as the Morgan Aero 8 and Morgan Aero SuperSports. The British company have now announced the production of a 2 + 2 coupe that will be given the designation EvaGT. It iis expected to debut at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Carmel, California.

The car will be based on the Morgan’s Aero SuperSports chassis while the design for the bodywork of the car uses computer technology which is then hand finished. This gives it an excellent aerodynamic feel with minimal shut lines, hidden wipers, flush door handles and sharp creases that deflect air over the surface of the car. No drag coefficient figures are available but from the teased design you can expect it to be relatively low.

Coupled with the sleek body will be the BMW turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six with direct petrol injection that develops 306 bhp and 400Nm of torque. Surprisingly, the EvaGT is only expected to sip 7.06 litre of fuel for every 100 km travelled which is quite an achievement for a sports coupe. This is because of the kerb weight of just 1250 kg which is less than the weight of certain hatchbacks.

All that power is channeled through either a six speed sport automatic gearbox or a 6 speed manual gearbox. Performance figures are guesstimates for the moment as Morgan say that the EvaGT can go from 0 to 100kmh in 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 273 km/h though you can be assured that more details will be available closer to the launch.

Only a 100 of these cars are expected to be produced which will begin in 2012 while a deposit of £5000 is expected from prospective customers. A striking departure from a company known for clinging to traditional designs, it would be amazing to see how the two door design will fit four humans. Unless they plan to use the same four adults that were used in the design of the back seat of the Mini.

Lewis Hamilton to start tomorrow’s Canadian GP from pole!

Lewis Hamilton will start tomorrow’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from pole position ahead of both the Red Bulls. The McLaren driver who was practically running on fumes on his final run scores his third consecutive pole at the North American race and his first since last year’s Abu Dhabi GP. This result ends Red Bull’s recent dominance in qualifying. Both Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel secured second and third places respectively.

A Ferrari was also seen in the pole battle but had to settle for fourth place. Yes we are talking about Fernando Alonso who will start the race ahead of Jenson Button in the other McLaren. Vitantonio Liuzzi made it onto sixth place for Force India while Felipe Massa from Ferrari secured seventh. Renault’s Robert Kubica, Force India’s Adrian Sutil and Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg made up the rest of the top ten.

Rosberg out-qualified his more experienced team mate, Michael Schumacher who only managed 13th. Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli from Lotus Racing will lead the new teams when the lights go green tomorrow with their 19th and 20th positions. The final four positions were taken up by Timo Glock of Virgin, Bruno Senna of Hispania and respective team mates Lucas di Grassi and Karun Chandhok.

Following Hamilton’s last minute pole, the Brit was told by his team to stop the car on the in-lap as it was about to run out of fuel and the team wanted to collect a sample. Hamilton stopped his McLaren on the back straight, got out of it and started to push the car, while waving to the fans! That pretty much overshadowed his final pole-securing run and became the highlight of the session.

The Canadian GP makes a return after a year of absence and just like all times, it is expected to host a very entertaining race as drivers push themselves to the limit and closer to the walls at the same time. Safety car periods are highly anticipated so look out for a spectacular event. For those of you who won’t be able to watch the race tomorrow midnight, you can come here to read about what you’ve missed!

BMW 6-Series Coupe & Cabriolet Artist’s Impressions

BMW 6-Series

If you look at the most recent spyshots of the next generation BMW 6-Series and have seen the BMW Concept Gran Coupe unveiled in China earlier this year, you’ll immediately notice that the Concept Gran Coupe was a preview of the new 6-er’s styling, thanks to the test car’s relatively minimal swirly disguise.

Thanks to the spyshots it’s actually quite easy to imagine what the new 6-Series would look like. I’m pretty sure the new 6-er once unveiled will bear a very close resemblance to these artist impressions prepared by Theophilus Chin. He has whipped up both coupe and convertible versions of the new 6-er, and perhaps BMW will add a third “four door coupe” bodytype that’s exactly like the Concept Gran Coupe! That would be sweet indeed!
