Let’s face it; we spend a lot of our time in our cars. Be it the usual traffic crawl to and from work, or a road trip to somewhere new, being in a car certainly takes up quite a bit of time in our daily lives.
When you’re inside a car, you might think you’re protected from air pollution and who wouldn’t? Most cars do come with a recirculation mode for the air-conditioning system, plus there’s a cabin filter that is tasked with keeping most pollutants out.
Unfortunately, these filters only work up to a certain extent and can’t cope with particulates that are so small, they are virtually invisible to the naked eye. More advanced filters may help in this regard, but these aren’t necessarily fitted to all cars.
These particulates can measure as small as PM2.5 microns, and are capable of penetrating deep into our lungs and cardiovascular system. Just to give you an idea how small PM2.5 microns is, human hair is around 80-100 microns in diameter, household dust is around 10 microns and pet dander is five microns.
You might think that these particulates are mainly concentrated in only a few cities, but the statistics paint a different picture. According to the 2016 World Health Organisaton (WHO) air quality model, 92% of the world’s population live in places where air quality levels exceed the WHO’s safety limit of 10 g/m3 annual mean.
The worse part is, air inside a car’s cabin can be up to 15 times worse than the outside, according to the British Environmental Audit Committee.
