GALLERY: 2018 Toyota Vios GX in detail – RM90,980

Last week, UMW Toyota Motor announced the availability of the updated Toyota Vios for 2018, which the company claims gives customers even better value for money. The changes are mostly cosmetic, with styling tweaks made inside out.

This particular unit is the Vios GX, which retails for RM90,980 on-the-road without insurance. Changes include the new shark fin antenna, illuminated scuff plates and front parking sensors (available only on the G, GX and TRD Sportivo variants).

The most notable change on the outside can be found in the front apron design. The black plastic is now stretched to shroud the fog lamps, and the lower lip features a more prominent flexure that’s contrasted with black highlights. The GX soldiers on with the same 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, first seen on the major update in October 2016. Rounding off the exterior is a revised rear lip, now with a honeycomb insert and diffuser fins.

Inside, the perforation on the leather seats is now contrasted in red as opposed to brown from before, and a new DVD-AVX entertainment system with enhanced features is also available. Linked to this is a reverse camera that’s fitted to all variants except the Vios J MT and AT. These come in addition to the running changes announced in May 2017.

Mechanically, the Vios remains unchanged. Under the bonnet is the same 2NR-FE 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i unit, with variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves. It has an aluminium block, producing 107 PS at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Drive is channeled to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission with a seven-speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic manual mode.

Safety-wise, the airbag count stays at two, but active safety features such as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and traction control are standard on all variants, in addition to ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and Isofix rear child seat anchors.

The Vios can be had in six exterior colours, from Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metalic, Attitude Black Mica, Crimson Spark Red Metallic, Super White II and White Pearl CS (the last one is only for the TRD Sportivo).

As before, there are six variants of the Vios on sale in Malaysia, with prices starting from RM74,980 for the 1.5J manual, rising to RM77,980 for the 1.5J auto, RM81,980 for the 1.5E auto, RM87,980 for the 1.5G auto, RM90,980 for the 1.5GX auto and RM93,980 for the 1.5 TRD Sportivo auto. All prices are on-the-road without insurance, and as usual for UMWT cars, the Vios comes with a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

      Why bother buying this car at RM90k when you can get exactly the same car in the Myvi 2018 for RM50k? Nearly half the price.

      And it uses exactly the same engine despite P1 fanboys telling you it is a different engine.

      Even Paul Tan’s review of the 2018 tell you it is using a Toyota Vios engine. But somehow, P1 fanboys are saying the opposite.

      So, why buy this Vios at RM90k when you can get the same car half the price. Remember, the Myvi has more legroom than this Vios despite the car looking smaller.

      there are hundreds of thousands of vios on the road sold since 2003 with 2 airbags, still running fine. most of them have ABS too. the secret here. dont drive like lunatics until u need airbags to protect you.

      all the vios on the road is evident to that. and the millions of protons and peroduas on the road too

    I have a feeling Toyota did not design the Vios to have 6 airbags so that’s why all the Vios sold in ASEAN does not have it. Will have to wait for next generation to add it in I guess haha. In the meantime Toyota will get slaughtered by its rivals.

    Seriously UMW? Slapping more hideous oversized/heavy bodykit onto a car which is overly designed? This type of rubber seamed kits are so 90s, makes the car look like it’s wearing baggy pants. Wonder which pop tart up the food chain gets all the money from subcontracting these fugly kits to their “recommended” suppliers.

    UMWT is working hard to out position own self off the market…good work!

    RAV4->CRV
    Altis->Civic
    Yaris->Jazz
    Vios->City
    Camry->Accord
    Estima/Alphard/Harrier->AP importers

    left Hilux, Fortuner (same platform)

    they can write a “how to run down a brand in a decade” book…i am surprise the Toyo still quiet about it.

      because they still sold about 50% percent of all cars in malaysia (more than 200k peroduas which are using toyota/daihatsu platform/engine/electronics) = totalling almost 300k units.

      toyota is also no.1 in indonesia, no 1 in thailand, no.1 in japan, no.1 in australia and no.1 in many middle east countries. and top 3 in the world.
