Happy hump day! We’re past the middle of the week and that means the weekend is fast approaching. What’s happening this weekend? Yes, this is Gothenburg’s first mild hybrid to be sold in Malaysia, perfect for those without the space at home to charge the company’s popular plug-in hybrids. Under the bonnet sits Volvo’s ubiquitous 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, here producing 249 PS and 350 Nm of torque.
Sandwiched between it and the eight-speed automatic gearbox is an electric motor that produces 14 PS and 40 Nm, enabling smoother engine start/stop operation, reduced fuel consumption and a burst of extra power under acceleration. This big seven-seater SUV can get from zero to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, all while being capable of returning a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.2 litres per 100 km.
Unlike past petrol-powered XC90s, the B5 comes in top-spec Inscription Plus trim, with goodies that include big 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, active air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, an Orrefors crystal gearknob, four-zone climate control and the car’s pièce de résistance – a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system with 19 speakers and a whopping 1,400 watts of power.
And as this is a Volvo, you can expect it to come with all the safety features you could ever need, including autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, run-off road mitigation and the company’s Pilot Assist system that handles acceleration, braking and steering – enabling Level 2 semi-autonomous driving.
