Chinese carmakers are no strangers to battery-testing stunts; now Chery has done one, and in our region, no less. The brand recently demonstrated the tropical durability of its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) battery in Jakarta by immersing it in a metre-deep tank of seawater for over 53 hours before reinstalling it into a Tiggo 8 CSH, which was then driven down a steep ramp.
“This battery safety test is part of a Global Safety Test campaign that reflects our commitment to continuously redefining the limits of automotive safety technology.
“Through the ‘seawater immersion and real-world driving evaluation’, we have validated the battery’s seal durability against corrosive liquids, and comprehensively examined its insulation performance, structural integrity, and charge/discharge stability,” said Chery Sales Indonesia brand department head Rifkie Setiawan.
Seawater is very conductive and corrosive, accelerating material degradation. This test validates the CSH battery’s operational safety in Southeast Asia’s harshest conditions, with risks such as short-circuiting, leakage and fire stymied, Chery said in a release.
IP68-certified for water and dust resistance, the Tiggo 8 CSH’s 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery has an operational temperature range of -35 to 60 degrees. It gives the big hybrid SUV up to 90 km of EV range and is capable of charging from 30-80% in 20 minutes.
The battery’s Chainmail Battery Safety Structure, designed with 14 safety anchor points, boosts chassis strength by 7% and can withstand extrusion forces up to 200 kN. The protection system is reinforced by a multi-layer insulation design – 10 layers at the base, 15 on the sides and 16 thermal layers.
According to Chery, the battery has already been subjected to spiral rollovers, dual collisions, a seven-vehicle stack test, a 55 km/h intrusion test, a 4.9-metre drop test and 720 hours of salt spray exposure in China.
Chery will next go to Mexico, where it will subject the Tiggo 7 CSH to an underbody scraping test in highland terrain, to assess the battery’s protection in challenging road conditions and high-altitude stability. It also plans to go to Brazil and South Africa for more tests.
Malaysia could welcome CSH cars soon – at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, Chery exhibited the Tiggo Cross HEV (hybrid), Tiggo 7 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and Tiggo 8 PHEV (plug-in hybrid). Click on the links to learn more about the SUVs.

Battery lasts longer than all iron based metal parts rusted in dire state wakaka
Tesla, Lucid and VinFast is profusely sweating at all these Chinese brave crazy tests for the public to see. All Japanese and Korean battery makers quickly left the chat and buat bodoh. Kudos to Chery. Berani kerana Power
All of this is good & dandy. Tiggo Cross HEV is already given to media for test drives in Malaysia. But until now nobody knows what is the cost of battery replacement of their HEV battery. RM5000? RM10,000?.
