Nissan has announced that it will stop producing vehicles at its Oppama plant in Japan at the end of fiscal year 2027, which is March 2028, as part of its Re:Nissan restructuring plan.
According to the automaker, both current and future models scheduled for production at Oppama will instead be manufactured at Nissan Motor Kyushu located in the in the southern prefecture of Fukuoka. The Oppama plant began production in 1961 and employs approximately 2,400 people. At present, it produces the Note but it previously built models such as the Bluebird, Cube, Juke and Leaf.
“This decision applies solely to the Oppama plant within the Oppama district. Other facilities and functions in the district – such as the Nissan Research Centre, the Grandrive proving ground, the crash test facility and Oppama Wharf (vehicle storage and shipping) —will remain unaffected and continue operations as usual,” the company said in its release.
“Today, Nissan made a tough but necessary decision. It wasn’t easy – for me or for the company – but I believe it’s a vital step toward overcoming our current challenges and building a sustainable future. The Oppama plant is a proud part of our history, and its legacy will endure,” commented Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa.
“I want to sincerely thank our employees, the local community and our partners who have supported this plant with dedication and heart. We will continue to operate in the Oppama area with strong support for the local community, as we carry forward the spirit of Oppama plant and work to restore Nissan’s true value,” he added.
As for what will happen to the Oppama plant, the company is exploring a wide range of options but hasn’t decided on anything for now. It notes that employees at the plant will remain employed until the end of fiscal year 2027.
The production stop at the Oppama plant is in line with the company’s restructuring plan to reduce its global production capacity from 3.5 million units (excluding China) to 2.5 million units while maintaining a plant utilisation rate of around 100%. This will see the consolidation of production sites from 17 to 10, with the Oppama plant being one of the “casualties.”
On a separate matter, Nissan says that production of the current NV200, currently consigned to the Nissan Shatai Shonan Plant located in the Kanagawa prefecture, will end in fiscal year 2026 (March 2027). A successor to the light commercial vehicle (LCV) will be introduced in fiscal year 2027.

Nissan in msia hv nothing much to offer. The recent Nissan kick, nv200 and perhaps Serena hybridis all that sells. No wonder nissan sales volume down to 300+ units in June. Down from 500+ in previous months… Nissan kick actually is a good and viable hybrid system which we also see adopted by Chinese hybrids. Poor marketing by tan Chong marketing team is a problem. Tan Chong also sells GAC made vehicles but try ask your wifey what model GAC offers? Perhaps they may reply what GAC!!!
so pitiful foxconn taiwan didn’t managed to rescue datsun co
buh bye nissan, let’s see if the taiwan dude can save your sorry ass
Lousy marketing & product line up in Malaysia.
GAC had potential, but greedy tan chong mispriced it. I guess the HQ is also having the Tan Chong effects.
