EV sales up 91.4% in H1 2025, but full electric vehicles only make up around 3.4% of new car sales in Malaysia

Sales of xEVs in Malaysia increased in the first half of 2025 when compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). In 1H 2025, a total of 30,573 xEVs, which include both hybrid and pure electric vehicles (EVs), were sold in the country. This is 8,031 units or 35.6% more than the 22,542 units recorded for 1H 2024.

Breaking down the 1H 2025 total, EV sales nearly doubled (91.4% increase) from 6,651 units in 1H 2024 to 12,733 units in 1H 2025. As for hybrids, the 17,840 units recorded for 1H 2025 is 1,949 units or 12.3% more than 1H 2024.

It is important to note that the sales data comes from MAA members, so figures from non-members such as Tesla, Zeekr and Xpeng are not included. As such, the actual number of xEVs – EVs specifically – sold in 1H 2025 should be higher. However, even if included the three brands based on JPJ registration data (3,564 units total as of 1H 2025, which may also include a few grey-import Teslas), total EV sales would be at 16,297 units.

That equates to a market share of around 4.3% relative to MAA’s 1H 2025 TIV figure of 373,636 units plus the JPJ-sourced figures of said three brands, which totals 377,200 units. Hybrids are slightly better at about 4.7%. Without the three non-MAA members, the market share is 3.4% for EVs and nearly 4.8% for hybrids.

Looking at historical data, the number of hybrids and EVs sold has consistently increased over the years. Going back a few years, 2021 saw a total of 8,153 xEVs sold, with hybrids making up the majority at 7,875 units compared to EVs that saw just 278 units.

With more hybrid offerings making their way to market in 2021 and 2022, sales of hybrid cars shot up considerably to 19,988 units (+153.8%) in 2022. The same is also true of EVs, which benefitted from government incentives that came into effect at the start of the year, bringing total sales to 2,631 units (+846.4%). The year of 2022 ended with xEV sales reaching 22,619 units (+177.4%).

This trend would continue in 2023, which saw xEV sales hit 38,214 units (+68.9%). EVs saw greater growth compared to hybrids, with 10,159 units (+286.1%) sold, although hybrids still made up the bulk of deliveries with 28,055 units (+40.4%).

In 2024, sales of hybrids increased by just 9.8% to reach 30,796 units. The government’s decision to extend EV incentives meant EV sales went up again, although by a much smaller margin when compared to the prior years. With 14,766 units recorded in 2024, EV sales increased by 45.3% when compared to 2023. Total xEV sales for 2024 was 45,562 units (+19.2%).
