Every vehicle registered in Malaysia gets a plate in the sequence for its area — for example Selangor runs on the B series and Kuala Lumpur on the W series. JPJ issues these numbers in order, so the “running number” is simply the newest plate the department has reached for that area. If you are registering a new car, your plate will be at or just after the number shown here for your state.
How to read Malaysian plates
- Peninsular states use a single letter followed by the running number, e.g. B (Selangor), W/V (Kuala Lumpur), J (Johor), P (Penang), A (Perak), M (Melaka), N (Negeri Sembilan), C (Pahang), D (Kelantan), T (Terengganu), K (Kedah), R (Perlis) and KV (Langkawi).
- Sabah uses an S prefix with a second letter for the division — SA Kota Kinabalu, SS Sandakan, ST Tawau, SB Beaufort, SU Keningau, SK Kudat, SD Lahad Datu.
- Sarawak uses a Q prefix with a division letter — QA Kuching, QM Miri, QT Bintulu, QS Mukah, QR Sarikei, QB Betong, QC Kota Samarahan, QP Kapit, QL Lawas.
- The Federal Territories run their own series: Kuala Lumpur (W, then V), Putrajaya (F / Putrajaya) and Labuan (L).
Frequently asked questions
How often do the numbers change?
JPJ issues registration numbers continuously, so the running number for a busy state can move within days while a quieter area changes slowly. This page shows the latest number on record for each area.
Is this an official JPJ page?
No. For anything official — including buying a preferred number — use JPJ’s own portal. JPJ remains the authority for registration numbers.
Why does a state show “not published”?
Some areas do not always have a current number on record (for example during JPJ maintenance). It shows again once a number is available.
Can I buy the next number?
Attractive and running numbers are sold by JPJ through its official online bidding system, not here. See our guide on how to bid for a JPJ number plate on JPJeBid.
