What is JPJeBid?
JPJeBid is the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) online system for bidding on vehicle registration numbers. It launched in 2019 — the first series to go online was Putrajaya's FC — and is now used nationwide for new plate series. Because it's an online system, your location doesn't matter: a KL resident can bid for and hold a Perlis number, and vice versa. The big draw is that you bid direct, cutting out the runner and their markup.
How to register for JPJeBid
First, register at the JPJeBid portal as an individual or a company, and verify your account via the email JPJ sends you. Your login user ID is your IC number (or company registration number).
One important point: winning bids are non-transferable and attached to the name on the account. So if the new vehicle will be registered under your name, bid with your own JPJeBid account — don't tumpang a friend's.
Number plate categories and base prices
JPJ groups numbers into tiers by desirability, and each tier has its own minimum (base) bid and bid increment. The current base prices are:

On top of your bid, there's a non-refundable RM10 service charge for each number you enter — think of it as a cover charge to get into that number's "auction room". Once you've paid it, you can bid on that number as many times as you like. Bid on three numbers, and that's RM30 in service charges, win or lose.
How the bidding works
A bidding session runs for about five days, but the auction room stays quiet until the final hours before the cut-off — usually 10pm on the last day. That's when the real fight happens. Normally each bid increment is 5% of the base price, but in the final 30 minutes the increment doubles to 10%, so the minimum jumps become RM2,000 (Golden), RM300 (Attractive), RM80 (Popular) and RM30 (Running).
To monitor your position, you'll need to log in to the JPJeBid website or app — there are no email alerts, only in-app inbox notifications. Your dashboard shows the top three current bids, so you know how much you need to top up to lead. Be warned: in the closing minutes, as bids pour in, the site can slow or briefly hang, and the leaderboard may lag.
Win limits: each individual can win up to three numbers per series, and each company up to five — a cap designed to stop resellers from dominating the auction. You can, however, enter as many numbers and concurrent series as you like.
How payment works
You'll need a Malaysian-issued credit or debit card. The RM10 service charge is a straight charge, while your actual bids are held as pre-authorisations (like a hotel check-in deposit). Each time you raise your bid, another pre-auth for the top-up is placed. If you win, all the pre-auths are charged together; if you lose, they're reversed — though the reversal can take a few days to show up on your statement.
Tips for winning your number
- Put in an early bid just to learn the interface — you'll be notified in-app if you're outbid.
- Do your fighting in the last 30 minutes, and log in early in case the site is slow.
- If you absolutely must have the number, a single high bid you're confident won't be beaten is safer — but you'll likely overpay versus the "best value" approach.
- For popular numbers you're up against resellers with deep pockets and big inventories, so enter the race but be prepared to lose.
You won — now what?
You'll find out the day after bidding closes, via an email from JPJ. If the title says gagal, you missed out; if it opens with sukacita dimaklumkan, congratulations. The attached letter grants you the right to the number, which you must register on a vehicle within 12 months — miss that window and the number is withdrawn with no refund. Buying a new car? Just hand your winning-bid letter to the sales advisor and they'll handle the registration.
Can I transfer a JPJeBid number?
Numbers are generally non-transferable, but JPJ allows transfers to immediate family — father, mother, husband, wife, siblings and children — if you provide proof of the relationship (a birth or marriage certificate) when registering the vehicle. No transfers are allowed for companies, societies or cooperatives.
So why are there so many plate resellers? A common (and legal) workaround is that the reseller registers the tendered number on a cheap new motorcycle, then performs a plate interchange: the number moves onto your car, and the bike gets a fresh running number.
