Hyundai to launch first hybrid in 2009

Hyundai will be launching its first mass production hybrid car in 2009, the Hyundai Avante LPI (also known as the Elantra LPI). This will be followed by other models and by 2012 Hyundai plans to have production fuel cell electric vehicles as well.

The Hyundai Avante LPI will run on both Liquefied Petroleum Gas and electricity. No specs have been unveiled, and it’s not known whether the powertrain can use regular gasoline or not, but the way it is worded seems to indicate it does not use regular gasoline, although that is a planned future development.

“The importance of developing futuristic, environmentally-friendly cars is increasing for sustainable growth. Therefore, technology for advanced cars, like the hybrid, is imperative,” said Hyundai-Kia Chairman Chung Mong Koo.

First Hyundai Company established in 1947.
hyundai is also the 5th largest automaker in the world, and also the largest shipbuilder in the world and is korea’s largest conglomerate.

In comparison, Proton was only established in 1983, and the 1st model rolled out in 1985. First true proton was only launched in 2000, thats a mere 8 years ago..

so its entirely ridiculous to compare proton and hyundai.
chanel, i dont think our taxes go to proton at all. of course the company was started on govt money(aka tax money). i didnt pay any taxes then of course.. but i believe its been a self sustaining company for a long long time already. even during the worst period for proton, around 2005-2006 when they were posting losses in the hundreds of millions, there was no govt. bail out.. but instead, they’ve managed to pull themselves out of it by restructuring, and coming up with new models which are selling well.

so yes. i think proton are on a better path today than they were last time. but no where in the league of hyundai for sure.

    Absolutely right banyak masuk bengkel.!

    2008 – 1947 = 61 years already.
and they still didnt had any superb conventional engine at all!.

As known earlier there’s gen2 EVE hybrid . Under current Syed Zainal , i wish they can produce 1st proton hybrid before 2015.

no need to hurry and desperate, better slow (but not too slow) for a good quality product rather than fast but broken after 1 year :p

Interesting car, but sadly in Malaysia there are I think less than 20 petronas LPG stations. And not all states have it. The queue will take about 2 hours to fill your car. We need more LPG stations

    Hello BanyakMasukWorkshop & bmpower,

The established date of 1947 is a bit misleading because Hyundai was not “car manufacturer” at that time.

To be historically accurate, Hyundai first rolled Hyundai Pony in 1976. Proton first produced Proton Saga in 1985. They were only 9 years apart. Proton did receive lots of technical help from Mitsubishi.

In 1986 (10 years after first production) Hyundai entered US market with Hyundai Excel. Where is Proton after 22 years its first production?

Speaking about competition in US market,
Honda Accord / Toyota Camry (with automatic, power windows/locks) sells for RM$65K. Yes, not a type, it’s only RM$65,000.

Hyundai still operates in US, where is Proton? Please don’t even mention hybrid!

With all respect, BanyakMasukWorkshop, it’s the folks like you who keep giving excuses to Proton. You brought the country backward.
