New Volvo S60 revealed ahead of Geneva

New Volvo S60 revealed ahead of Geneva

Used to seeing concepts watered down for production, we’re happy to see Volvo sticking to their guns for the new S60. The production version of Volvo’s mid-sized exec, revealed here ahead of its Geneva debut, looks remarkably similar to the S60 Concept the Swedish brand wheeled out at the 2009 Detroit show.

Among the distinctive cues carried over is the XC60 style front end, the wavy signature line on its profile and those inverted L-shaped taillamps, but the basic shape is recognisable as an S60. Volvo says that “the sculpted hood and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasize the sports-car feel.” We’re not sure about the “sports-car feel” but this S60 does have presence. It has grown is size too; longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase, but is less than 45kg heavier than the current car.

New Volvo S60 revealed ahead of Geneva

Engine choices include a twin-scroll turbo 3.0-litre inline-six with 300 bhp and 440 Nm. Paired to a new six-speed auto (faster shifts) and Haldex AWD, this S60 T6 does 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.5 seconds. Of course following the common trend of ‘engine downsizing’, there will be a new 2.0-litre GDTi engine, which is good for 203 bhp and 300 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

Three suspension setups will be available: Base, Dynamic and Four-C Adaptive. The optional Dynamic uses stiffer springs and bushings, retuned dampers and thicker piston rods, while Four-C adaptive damping aims to provide the best of all worlds.

On the safety front, Advanced Stability Control employs a new roll angle sensor to identify any skidding tendency at a very early stage. Also debuting is Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, which can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the S60, warn the driver, before automatically apply full braking power if he/she does not respond in time. This system works at speeds up to 35 km/h. This is a development of City Safety, which works the same way, but for vehicles.

Full hi-res gallery after the jump.

  • good evolution of design.the present S60 managed to last almost 10 years without looking too stale.sold mine last year(bought in 2001-one of the first buyers in Malaysia) but I still think it looksbetter than many 2001 models especially if the black mouldings have been painted.

The S60 is an excellent highway cruiser-stable even at high speed, with good traffic light acceleration but try to chase a beemer up a twisty road and you'll be left far behind.

Maintenance for volvo is expensive especially for the turbocharged models

  • Quite nice. The 1st non-dull Volvo that I feel might generate interest from those who might want to try buying some left-field choices, especially the one with the sporty skirts & diffusers. Does the kit will come standard with the turbo 3.0 or it's just an option?

wah the interior is soooooo driver oriented… look at the aircond vent. it's centrally located and occupies the whole width of center console.

Volvo: by 2020, noone should be injured in or by a Volvo….

I guess that's bad news for orthopaedic surgeons as there will be less trauma cases… hahaha…

  • I don't get what's so "girly" about the front. But all I see here is that Volvo is no longer boring and boxy, and this new S60 reminds me of cars from the 1960s – smooth lines, front heavy and really sexy.

Volvo needs to reduce cost of repair n maintenance parts… otherwise it will in no way get new customers here in malaysia. even loyal ones will turn away because of the cost. The distributors here are denying it but they should check it out for themselves. In malaysia, people dont compare part prices and services with the likes of mercedes n BMWs. Rather they compare the prices with the toyotas n hondas. I spoke to a guy at the showroom who said more ore less like this. "Why should I buy an S60 when I can get a Camry or Accord. Who cares about the superior safety features. Camrys n Accords also have multiple airbags n things… anyway, you dont buy a car to crash them". While you can go on arguing about the techs and engineering, not all buyers are able to comprehend em. Not everyones an engineer.

Volvo parts are so expensive and absurd that even the almost-rich fellas are shying away to got to Toyotas n Hondas because these cars offer what the local market wants. Go and ask the volvo dealer how much a fender cover cost. Youd be surprised…

Another thing is that there are not so many shops offering volvo mods. Custom bodykits and tuning parts are hard to come by. There are demands for mod parts but the distributors here doesnt seem to listen. Believe it or not, there are a lot of volvo users that are into mods, racing and stuffs. There are young ones too unlike the notion that only old folks drive volvos.

Do like other makers… let small shops sell aftermarket bodykits… it is afterall a form of marketing. Other brands are so far ahead is this respect and volvo still doesnt want to accept the fact for all various reasons and principles. Gosh… I talk too much… sorry folks. I hope someone at volvo is reading this.

I love my my mom's S60. This new model has retained many design, which are both good and bad. One of the setback is the stupid headrest. Its purpose is to deflect the neck and head in case of an accident, something called whiplash injury. For me, it is hard, uncomfortable, block passenger's view and worst, not adjustable.

The other problem is the gear stalk. I wish they can make it smaller so that the lower buttons in center console is more reachable. Nowadays, who needs a big automatic gear stalk?

Aftermarket mods for Volvo? Ah… hopeless. Until now, I still can't find a Pegasus wheels for the ride. Maintenance? Go to chop shop and buy replacement parts lo..
