2012 Subaru Forester pricing revised in Malaysia

In the market for an SUV around the RM150k region? We’ve tried helping you make your buying decision in our five-fold mega SUV shootout story. Other than the SUVs featured in that story, there’s also the new Kia Sportage. Now buyers are even more spoiled for choice as the CBU Subaru Forester has had a big revision in pricing in May 2012, including the addition of a new more affordable 2.0 litre model.

The new Subaru Forester 2.0X AWD model is priced at RM149k without OTR costs and insurance, which after adding those costs in, brings the final price tag to RM154,089.20. It’s powered by Subaru’s FB series 2.0 litre four cylinder boxer engine with Active Valve Control System (AVCS), producing 148 PS at 6,000rpm and 196Nm of torque at 4,200rpm. This engine is mated to a SPORTSHIFT 4-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0X AWD model has all-wheel drive, dual SRS front airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control System, ABS and EBD, and disc brakes all round. Alloy wheels are 16 inchers. The sound system is a 4 speaker system with a 1-CD 2-DIN player that suports Bluetooth, USB input and steering wheel audio controls. The power steering system is of the EPS type. There’s also a more expensive model is the Subaru Forester 2.5 XT AWD Turbo, which is now priced at RM185,264.90 OTR including insurance, a big price drop from the previous price tag of over RM220k. This model’s 2.5 litre four cylinder boxer engine produces 230 PS at 5,200rpm and 320Nm of torque at 2,800rpm, also mated to a 4-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic.

Other than the more powerful engine, the 2.5 XT AWD Turbo model adds 17 inch alloys, front side and curtain airbags, a power sliding glass sunroof, roof spoiler, hydraulic power steering instead of EPS, HID lighting for low beam, cruise control and an 8-way power adjustable driver seat. • How can they just reduce the price like that? Are they finally ready to take lower margin of profit for the sale? Or do is it AFTA in action? I doubt it is AFTA though.

A CBU Japan 4wd SUV at less than 150k? That shows how much Toyota/Honda etc have been ripping us off saying our cars are expensive because of taxes…Why is this CBU Japan model cheaper than their locally assembled models?

Told many of us already, no need tax reduction, as the ‘reduction’ will be telan bulat-bulat by UMW-H by increasing the price back to before reduction.

BTW, this Subaru seems to be big friend of Toyota, see, berkongsi T-86, and mencontohi Camry 4-speed.

  • I think in that 150k+ to 180k+ price range, there are many good SUVs to choose from in the market. But the best part of this forester is the 2.5 turbo boxer engine which sounds solid and very torquey. Other than that can’t think of reasons to get one. Looks and specs on offer just average. Nothing to shout about.

wonder why they still promote 4 speed? trap in the 80’s phobia?

  • The 2.5 turbo started off life in Malaysia at something like 190K a couple of years ago. Then it went up to 230K (sales guy said at that time it was due to MITI increasing their declared pre-tax price) and now it goes back down to 185K. Geeez, how do you pony up money to buy a vehicle that has a fluctuating price? What if you had bought it a year ago at 230K? Won’t you be screaming now?

Base on this alone, I would drop this brand of my list, at least in Malaysia regardless of how good the car is!

Yeah, me too. They thought Jap=premium all the while so priced their cars at sky high price. Now they woke up but too late. While most other makers have much better offers now, they starting to promote their dinosauric models lolx…btw Motorimage sold 10 (TEN) cars in May 2012 in SG, so time to penetrate MY mrkt???

  • The Forester has something none other her competitors doesn’t. Symmetrical full-time AWD, with 50-50 distribution frt and back. Particularly useful especially in treacherous weather conditions.

  • I am the Forester 2.5 xt 2012 owner. I have tested Cx5, Tiguan, CRV, Fortuner, Harrier, X Trail before i decided to buy it. This is the best Suv i had driven. The subaru AWD system is top class. This is the driver’s car. Fun to drive. Superd handling. Dynamic engine. Comfort ride. You have to experience yourself. Not just the looks of it but substance. The traction for this car is the amazing.
