When Brabus turns its attention to a large Mercedes-Benz car, big numbers can be expected to result. Based upon the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet, the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio is upsized in just about every performance figure.

As the name suggests, it produces 850 hp at 5,400 rpm and 1,450 Nm of torque from 2,500 – 4,500 rpm; this peak torque figure is electronically limited to 1,150 Nm in order to help preserve the car’s seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The standard S 63’s 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 has been given a considerable going over, in order to achieve those lofty numbers. Engine displacement has been increased from 5,461 cc to 5,912 cc courtesy of a longer stroke crankshaft, enlarged cylinder bore and matching forged pistons and connecting rods. The two cylinder heads have also been re-machined for improved performance.

On the exhaling side of things, the standard turbos have been replaced with Brabus’ own, larger ones, which feature larger compressor units working with bespoke exhaust manifolds. Also installed are a set of 75 mm down pipes with revised metal catalysts, channeling waste gases through a stainless steel exhaust system.

Meanwhile on the intake side, a pair of larger air filter boxes and carbon air ducts help the engine receive more air, with intake heat shielding made of gold.

All that and more contribute to the Biturbo Cabrio’s huge numbers, which translate to suitably speedy performance: 0-100 km/h goes by in just 3.5 seconds, while 200 km/h is reached in 9.4 seconds. Given enough road, the 850 hp Brabus will attain an electronically capped top speed of 350 km/h, in the interests of tyre preservation at speed.

Externally, the Brabus 850 Biturbo Cabrio wears 21-inch Monoblock “Platinum Edition” wheels shod with 255/35ZR21 rubber at the front and 295/30ZR21 at the rear. These are matched to a suspension module which lowers the car by 15 mm, along with some more aggressive carbon fibre detailing on the front and rear bumpers and side skirts, plus ceramic exhaust tips on the sport exhaust system.

Inside, the cabin also gains some embellishment such as carbon fibre trim, illuminated Brabus scuff plates, aluminium paddle shifters, pedals and door lock pins as well as a 400 km/h speedometer, just to remind its driver and its occupants of the monstrosity of this beast.
