General Motors is developing a new V12 engine for Cadillac to be used in a new large luxury sedan to be built for the marque. The new Cadillac large luxury sedan will go against the likes of the Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes Benz S-class.
The V12 powerplant is being built by joining two existing 3.6 litre V6 designs in tandem, making them share a single crankshaft. Thus, the new V12 will share the 3.6 litre V6’s technologies such as cylinder shut-off during low load for better fuel economy as well as direct injection. The new 7.2 litre V12 is expected to make over 600 horsepower and 732Nm of torque.

Now all that's left, is to see how the new car looks like.
Would it be bigger than the CTS?
Or would it be the combination of the CTS and Seville platforms?

Its nothing new, manufacturers have been joining engines together with a common crankshaft either end to end or side by side (VW group "W" engines)
New engines are developed to be "modular", meaning the same family shares the same components and manufacturing adding cost effectiveness in manufacturing 4, 6 and 8 cyc families.
It will probably be in something bigger than the CTS and STS. The CTS is small in comparison, its already full of engine with the Corvette LS6 stuffed into it. This will be a new upmarket engine for a new car. The existing Northstar V8 is already too much engine for the STS/DTS's front wheels. New car will have to be RWD/AWD.
It shows that GM is desperate for something as "revolutionary" as a W12. The Phaeton had it so long ago and it did make much impact, because buyers will still compare it with highly developed V8's that are powering most of the high end saloons, not to mention the supercar class.
What the Americans should focus is on handling and build quality. If the Japanese and Europeans can do it, why not them?

joint 2units of V4 becomes W8, VW Passat has it
joint 2units of V6 become W12, on VW Phaeton
joint 2units of V8 become W16 on Buggati Veyron 8.0L 1001bhp 407Km/h car (Buggati a VW company)
maybe more other makes would opt to such design soon….

If i'm not entirely mistaken, this Cadillac engine concept has been floating around for quite some time in the form of the Cadillac Sixteen. I think there was only 1 made a few years back as featured by Top Gear's James May a few seasons ago.
