New Suzuki Alto: performance and dimensions

Here are more details on the Suzuki Alto, which we sort of had a look at earlier in teaser form and also as a rebadged Nissan Pixo. The new compact A-segment hatchback is targeted to sell about 60,000 units a year in Europe following its Spring 2009 launch. It’s also set to be one of the few top sellers in India under the Maruti name.

The new Suzuki Alto measures 3,500mm long, 1,600mm wide and 1,470mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,360mm. This means it is shorter, wider but lower than the Viva which has dimensions of 3,575mm x 1,475mm x 1,530mm. As for boot size, the Alto can take 129 liters with the rear bench in place and utilised.

The Alto uses a MacPherson strut suspension design at the front and what Suzuki calls a proprietary 3-link torsion beam at the rear, whatever that means. Under the hood is the inline-3 1.0 liter K10B unit that made its debut with the Suzuki Splash. It produces 68 PS at 6,000rpm and 90Nm of torque at 4,800rpm.

With a kerb weight of 910kg for the high-spec automatic version, it has a power to weight ratio of 13.38kg per PS, compared to the Viva 1.0 Premium automatic’s 13.33kg per PS. This means its performance should be very similiar to the Viva 1.0 Premium, though the VIva’s peak torque of 90Nm kicks in earlier at 3,600rpm.

Look after the jump for 3 more shots of the Alto.

The rear window seems to be the fixed type that you pop open rather than the wound down type. It is usually for three door vehicles. I suppose Suzi plans a three door version which will subsequently use this part.

    haresi,

they’re the same car. original is from suzuki and nissan has badge engineered their from the donor car.

did you guys notice the rear window? it’s not the wind down type. just flip out like the old coupe cars. can live with that? i know all cars hv a/c nowadays but what if you need to jump out the rear window in an emergency?

knight_templar, the flush windowa on the Euro Alto model pops-open a bit for ventilation similar to the one on the Toyota Aygo.

The spy photos of the model testing in India appears to have roll-down windows (with small fixed rear quarter windows).
I guess this means that the Alto for markets with warm climate will most likely get the version with roll-down windows.

lowprofile, I think the version with flush rear windows that pop open is for Europe.
Warm climate markets might get the version with rear roll-down windows.

Here’s an old spy photo posted a few months ago…

If you notice, the rear window is not flush like the Euro model, and it has a small fixed quarter glass panel (which allows the window to roll down the door and clear the wheel arch)

knight_templar, Just like the European spec Alto, the European Toyota Aygo’s rear side windows only pop out (hinged) for ventilation. Its the front windows that roll down.

In the case of the Alto, there appears to be a version (for warm climate markets?) with rear windows that roll down.

i don’t mind whether it is Nissan or Suzuki.
i am curious about the driving dynamics: will both cars perform the same?

pop-out window is cheaper & safer, in case of emergency, just kick the window to get out of the car! hehehe..

    hmm..why the dashboard looks like gen2? ;)

i like the suzuki’s fascia more compared to the nissan.

Suzuki should have carried over the front headlamp from the concept version (A-Star or something, can’t recall well). Too bug-eyed.

Styling-wise, European hatchbacks/coupe is getting better & better, what’s wrong with the Japanese?

Who cares, as long as it’s cheap and build quality which can compete with the locals.
