Fifth Gear: Evolution 6 vs. Evolution 9

small_evo9_red.jpgFifth Gear pits the latest production Evo – Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9, against by far everyone’s favourite Evo, the last Evo with that menacing and raw look – the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6.

Let’s see what’s changed since the introduction of the Evo 6 back in 1999, til the Lancer Evolution 9’s introduction in 2006. The Evo6 still costs about RM100 to 120K now.

Both are superb ! I would go for the 6 because of the fierce looks & price. Evo 9 is awesome too but it's not fierce (compare to 6) & the price is a Boom ! Great product from Mitsubishi though !

it goes to show that being newer is not always better, and why the TME a.k.a. Evo '6.5' is still my favourite, the best version of the best evo.

Em, good. Two sibling fight each other, maybe to take on the crown of "Best Evo". But both are under Mitsu. Evo6 is still a legend, same as Evo3. Evo9? Not much it can say, winning for cosmetics upgrade. Evo7 is better on many criterias if conclusion is made.

As we all heard, "don't fight the old man.. don't fight with old man… don't.."

Evo9, respect your elder brother. Evo6, respect your Evo3.

Great video test drive comparison between the EVO 6 and 9. BTW that chick sure knows how to drive, unlike some female malaysian drivers.

Well, as many would swear by, especially those who have driven most of the EVO incarnations, the EVO 6 GSR remains the most manic to drive, even novices may apply. THe TME is still somewhat my favourite, being the more raw version of the 6 GSR. What really impressed me about the TME was the relatively ease of handling with a lil' more driver input required to steer the car as opposed to the 6 GSR. The 6 GSR needs very minimal opposite lock, just point the steering straight and the car gets back to its line in perfect harmony. Tech overkill? Even Jeremy Clarkson commented about the 6 GSR's party piece.

The 9 is more subdued, but is certainly very easy and intuitive to drive. I was lucky enough to geta spin in an Ralliart Evo 9 with Ralliart ECU with Yoko semi slicks. Absolute joy i'd say.

Evo 9 vs Evo 6 is like a 911 Carrera S vs 911GT3 showdown. One, an easier car to live with and the other, more favourable if the daunting Nurburgring track is near your house.

funny, upon listening to the video's title, i hoped and thought the Evo 9 would have easily won having that much acclaimed valve varying technology, Mivec as an added surefire.

i can't say i really believed the result given by the tester since there's no acknowledgement of how many times have they tested each of the Evo on the lap for its average performance but one thing for certain is that this video really shames the Evo 9.Furthermore, the Evo 9 is an FQ version, having lost to an ordinary Evo 6?It's a bit unthinkable so I think there's a slight debatable reason here.

From the legendary Evo I until the Evo VI and until the Concept X, Lancer Evolution is a true legend on the road…..

    I'm not surprised at all!

If you looked at the specs, 1200kgs of EVO6 versus 1400KG of EVO9. evo6 will always be faster around the corner. Even if EVO9 has twice as much power, the evo6 will still corner faster. You can't beat physics by using more power, or fancy technology

Personally, I always thought, since evo7 onwards, the evo series has lost its charm, both in performance and looks. I mean how can a sports car have taller dimensions on a newer version??
