No racing future for McLaren MP4-12C?

No racing future for McLaren MP4-12C?

Looks every bit the race car, doesn’t it? But McLaren boss Ron Dennis has ruled out the company fielding a factory team to race its new MP4-12C supercar, according to Autosport.

“We don’t have plans to race it, but we do recognise that some of our customers will want to race this car,” Dennis said. “At the appropriate time we will form a department to service that – but thoughts on a factory team entering any series are premature.”

Wouldn’t it be good to see McLaren’s finest wing-to-wing with the likes of Maserati’s MC12 and the Ford GT in the FIA GT1 championship, or even a try at Le Mans, where the McLaren F1 GTR won in 1995. For now, we’ll have to make do with some amazing renderings from talented digital artist Jon Sibal. Here, Sibal created a “GTR variant” of the MP4-12C in colours that pay homage to the original F1 GTR liveries.

Same stance they had with the Mclaren F1 sportscar. They had no intention to race it but their customers did so they eventually decided to support customers with the GTR and LM. Very successfully I might add.

Nah, why wait for McLaren to run a factory race team? If it's good enough, give it to a privateer.

Probably McLaren's boss himself doesn't have the confidence that this new car can live up to the McLaren's name like its predecessor.

It's not about confidence, its about business. I don't see why a factory raced MP4-12C would be a priority right. Even the Mclaren F1 did not have a factory initiated racing programme

it's not cheap to enter a competition..they afraid to gamble..it's part of advertising if they win, good news, but if they lose sure tarnish the image. futhermore it's a new car, better wait first.

in a business point i tink runing a factory team wud be expensive..i tink it wud be better to provide the facility to a privateer n let them spen thourgh thier noses for it…lik porshe, look hw strong the factory support is for their privateer teams..i may be wrong;)

If you look at FIA GT these days, there's hardly any full factory supported team, it's more like semi-factory in GT1/GT2, and almost all are privateers in GT3. Possibly if some teams want to race the new Mclaren in the FIA GT, most likely they have to develop the car on their own (aeros, suspension). The Mclaren factory probably, will only service the engine..
