Proton today launched a very special version of their Neo CPS – the Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing. Priced at RM115k it has various equipment upgrades including an engine tune-up. Now producing 145 bhp and 168 Nm of torque, the engine is a substantial 25 bhp and 18 Nm up on the standard CPS. 0-100 km/h is now done in 9.2 seconds and top speed is 200 km/h, compared to 10.5 seconds and 190 km/h for the standard Neo CPS M/T.
RM115,000 is a lot of money to pay for a Satria Neo, but this doubled price tag over the standard Neo CPS comes with much more than just a carbon fibre bonnet and Lotus Racing emblems. There’s some serious performance upgrades that should make it quite a hoot to drive, and these improvements are not just reflected in the vital stats.
More vital than these improved figures however are things like revised ratios for the five-speed gearbox. According to a source in R3, the Neo R3 Lotus Edition will rev till its 7500 rpm redline in EVERY gear, and all sorts of torque curve issues have been been banished. We look forward to a test drive to confirm this exciting revelation. When the head of the R3 department is one of the best drifters in the world, you can be sure that the division’s products are not just about power and acceleration. Handling is a big part of the equation, and bearing the “Lotus Racing” name means that this car has to deliver some thrills behind the wheel.
There’s some delicious sounding hardware in this car. First up are the Öhlins DFV (Dual Flow Valve) fully adjustable coil-over suspension with spring and damper rates specifically tuned for this application by R3. The Neo also gets stiffened rubber bushes and revised suspension geometry. All these are claimed to deliver “racecar-like direct steering input and cornering precision”. The saved weight from the carbon hood also means that there’s less weight over the front axle, which is good news. This car is 62 kg lighter than the standard Neo CPS at 1150 kg.
If you peek behind the 16-inch Advanti alloys wrapped with 205/45 Bridgestone Adrenalin rubber, you’ll spot the four-pot AP Racing calipers gripping the front discs. The rear discs make do with single pot items. Other than the engine tune-up, you also get R3 Titanium Exhaust Headers, R3 Alloy Underdrive Pulleys, an R3 Tuned Exhaust System, and an R3 Carbon Fiber Airbox. These equipment including R3-tuned camshaft profiles contribute towards the power upgrade.
R3 has plans to make 25 units of the Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing Edition. Our sources say that 11 units are already accounted for, and we reckon that Proton will have no problems selling off the remaining units. They will of course come up with a second batch if response and demand is sufficient.

If EK/DC5 sell with its current price now with ony 25 produced in the market you know what will happen to HONDA? tutup kedaila. Thats why the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN will cost £38,599=190,656.67 MYR as only 20 units produced. Satria neo and satrianeo lotus R3 is differ same goes to Honda EK and Honda EK Mugen. For my opinion, kereta ni dicipta khas enjin dan chasisnya mmberikan keserasian kepada performance untuk jenis neo r3 lotus racing edition ni. Sgt Mantap. Ada mereka yg mmpersoalkan originality kereta ni?, aku rasa neo ni pun sama jugak dgn konsep HONDA VTEC TYPE R ( i mean the concept not the performance, its surely not same), cuba renung balik, bukan neo ni masuk side mirror lipat mmc kat wira kan? neo ni menggunakan barang2 racing ciptaan dan rekaan khas untuk jenis neo ni, so ini lah yg dipanggil originality, pada mereka yang agak lembab tu renung kembali sama tak konsep dia? betul tak kwan2?
Mereka yang mencipta dan mengubahsuai kenderaan ni sudah pasti nya menilai setiap point kereta ni dari segi cornering, engine performance, keselesaan, safety dan sbgainya agar balance. so for me, kalau sesebuah kereta tu mmpunyai BHP yg tinggi tetapi tidak serasi dngn chasis adalah sesuatu yang agak tidak memuaskan. so neo r3 terbaru ni adalah salah sebuah kereta yg diubahsuai dengan mantap rekaannya dan performance.

Really cool spec. Instead of produce it super duper ultra exclusive, its better to lower the specs a lil bit & increase the volume. Then the rakyat can be REALLY proud of having our very own F1 team & the best part is "The Machine". Guess PDRM have to work extra hard to chase us afterwards.
Or Proton perhaps to buat the new GTI. Sure they can regain the supremacy of Malaysian market & SEA & Australia & GB & Iran & wherever -lah!

I think the rear is a bit too cluttered, with all the emblems and decals going on. It might be better to group the "R3" and "Lotus Racing" text together on the left, and move the Lotus graphic to the fenders. Just my personal choice, though. :)
Other than that, the British racing green color looks good on the Neo. Can't wait to read up more about the car.

a proton engineer once said that you can actually bring your Proton cars to R3 and have it tuned up by them. there's a few package they are offering.. but those packages sure won't come cheap..

This Proton Satria Neo R3 is Lotus Company whom heavily modified from chasis and so on. Look at the specs of this car again. Together with many 3rd party sourced parts, i think the price justified it. There's engine modification in this R3 compared to the old Satria which is being sourced.
With so many modifications, there's well be alot of prototypes for trial and error…..Lots of time and also money will be spent on this R3……..
Besides, this is a limited editions model…

no need to pay more.. the pug 308 turbo has better spec sheet and better performance. There is no need for stupendous stopping power when you are only dealing with 145 bhp and a 0-60 figures which are almost industry standard today. In short there is really nothing to scream about other than a tarted up neo with some 'carbon effect' stickers and a bit of leather in the interior.
The performance figures might be impressive say 10 – 15 years back. Not today unfortunately. The less time and money spent on stupid projects like this, the better. Proton needs to build better cars before indulging in such frivolity. Look at Kia, have they bothered with so called tarted up high performance car in the past? They are light years ahead with their current range…

I always liked this car but never dare to buy because of the 'legendary' Proton build. So many things to love about this car yet so much to loath.
Things to hate about (when they can make it better):
-Outdated built (extensive use of steel for body structure where more aluminum can be used to reduce its weight) this car is very heavy for its size by today's standard.
-Door hinge is (I guess) from another 4 door Proton because the 2 door Neo's door is a lot heavier and a hinge designed for 4 door-er is not going to support its weight. The door feels slightly out of place, made it difficult to close.
-Gear shift is by far the worst thing in the car. Being hailed as a enthusiast car the car stick mechanism is a shame.
-Interior, just look at it..
But I cannot deny the car look so good. Only if they can address all these things, I would prefer this car to a swift sport :D
DK, Aluminium is expensive. Right now only the top supercar like the Audi R8 and I believe the Ferrari are made of aluminium. Costly cars. Audi tried to use aluminium in the A2 and it failed.
Not necessary, structurally is made of steel, but the filler metals in between like metal sheets and panels could be aluminum sheet. also the engine block. but this car isn't exactly 'cheap' isn't it?

the TSI is turbo AND supercharged..btw i dun like turbo.. if soft turbo no problem but the power is so small,better yet n/a all the way. hard turbo is powerful but its temperature is very high and it put a lot of stress on the engine thus making the engine 'manja' ..thats y race car rarely use turbo coz need bigger thus heavier intercooler and radiator and not to forget thicker(heavier) engine block,its hard to control on cornering also coz of the high tork..i like n/a i think ^^

But I would love to get a hand on the AP Racing brakes… I think the expensive part is the brake which I asked before that cost around 10 – 12k for it. You can't compare the price you get at ah beng with the price proton squeezed from their suppliers. Proton charged a premium because it is a limited edition. Proton should have done better in term of performance, not just a screwed add-on body kits.

For just a 20Nm bump? Even after those carbon fiber inserts, leather seats, brakes and suspension, a little blessing from Lotus you pay an additional RM60k? Probably reasonable lah. But the lackluster enhancement given is something I'm actually dissapointed with Lotus. I expected much more. 0-100 in 9.2 for a hothatch "tuned by Lotus"!? Boring to say the least. But like some say… it is definitely an enthusiast's car and DEFINITELY NOT a performance car.

I think overall proton & lotus doing a great job for this car… but sadly the price is too high up, beside the seat, we still getting a cheap interior like neo cps n r3. Why we need to spend approxi double of the price for just Lotus branding? If the price stick around RM70-80K then maybe can be a car to consider. But RM115K, We should spend our money wisely.
Have to say quite ridiculous price. The biggest drawback for me is the engine. Without a turbo, i doubt this car will be fast. Anyone can increase the output of an engine by making it rev higher. People normally don't because power @7000rpm is pretty useless because like Jeremy Clarkson said, it's like putting it at the top shelf, you never will be able to reach it before you have to break and go into a corner. Hopefully they should at least address the torque dip problem from the original neo cps (and looking at the graph they might have). Sudden dip in power while revving higher is pathetic to say the least.
Other problems from the original car will still surely be there. Poorly designed interior and shoddy build quality. Im sure the interior will rattle like a full blown orchestra @7000rpm vibration levels. Gear change is abysmal. The gear would be decent 15 years ago but at todays standard it is just really really bad.
At such prices there are so much competition (peugeot 308 turbo) that any sane person would pass up this car. However I can see some lotus, r3 or satria fans buying this car for its novelty value.

RM115K…. ok, sounds expensive, but think about it. The AP racing is what, RM15K? Engine stuff (new management, cams, pulleys, CF intake and K&N, titanium headers and new exhausts) is what, RM10K? CF hood, body kits with that lovely paint job and livery is what RM10K? New rims, the bridgestones, Ohlins fully adjustable, hard rubber bushes, is what another RM8-10K? Then interior stuff like seats, pedals and stuff, what RM3K? Plus their margin (need la, u think its a charity ka to do work for free…). Plus that over the price of the stock neo, its about there…. and its been prep'd by R3, if u know them, they don't simply buy aftermarket stuff and bolt them on, a lot of research is done to ensure it suits the car and its intended purpose…
Lil bit touch up.. under the hood.. may zoom you fast… 126 hp per tonne…its good!!!

agree, the brakes and coilover is the most expensive part upgraded and 145 bhp with 168nm is not impressive and 0-100kmh in 9.2 sec is SLOW! interior is still full of plastic unlike the old satria gti. exterior is acceptable and for me it looks too aggrasive for a low performance car. Trust me, when you drive this on the road, turbo cars will eat you alive… not to mention the tame golf gti and dc5.

This is just a souped up Neo R3. I was hoping a real Lotus upgrades done on the engine and chassis.

Suzuki swift sport, highly acclaimed handling, 0-100 in 8ish seconds. Spec says 8.9sec.
But my gtech says 8.3 sec after RM400 air filter mod.
So both are good handling cars, with the swift sport has faster acceleration and slightly cheaper.
Don forget suzuki swift sport is made in japan.

This should be the really limited edition of Neo. Will be pursued by collectors. RM115k is okla considering the parts used to upgrade it. But 200km/h? Prrfff!! Should go faster. Maybe 235? 240? Then Lotus Racing name would carry some weight to the sales point. But I still don't like that rear bumper. Neo CPS one looks better.

These cars are for specific target markets and not mass produced. And these target audience will pay the price for this sort of specs and exclusivity. Why is the price so high? Do the basic math (economies of scale). Low production count means higher per unit part cost.

Its a stupid project and it does not in any way help proton sell cars..you know, the cars which actually make them money.. the bog standard compacts, family saloons and mpvs. What it does is merely causes embarrassment to Proton for making a fuss over a tarted up piece of crap which is so far behind the technology and performance curve and proclaim that it is some sort of an engineering achievement. If you cant see that, perhaps you need to look in the mirror and see who actually is the idiot.
Proton is based on tax payers money and has cost petrol heads in malaysia dearly. So its open for all of us to criticize if they come up with such embarrassing hair brained projects. Low volume special edition cars are engineering showpieces. Not tarted up crap which is cannot even out perform its previous generation offerings (Satria GTi and Putra). Putting in off the shelf hot bits are nothing to shout about either.
Look at the Koreans, they have left us standing. Do you remember any hot limited edition cars from Kia? Yet despite not having that, they have come up with the Forte which is light years ahead from anything Proton is currently offering.
Specific target market? Exclusivity? Puhlezz… stop having delusions of grandeur. It is a Proton. It is no point buying a 'hot' 2 door 'sports car with high end bits when you are gonna get smoked by an old Satria GTi or worse still a 20 year old Proton Putra. 2) should have 2 exhaust pipe compared to one.
3) the bumpers should be designed arodynamically rather than this open mouth design.
last time when R3 used momo steering for neo R3 many peoples condemn them. no airbag, no safety but when R3 use original steering with airbag also have some buffoon said the steering is bulky, hideous and look stupid.

Had a chat with one of the R3 boys there, he said the 'carbon fibre' bit at the door and stering wheel comes from Japan, cost about RM100++.
This car also has Start button, very cool to me. Pricey maybe, but with just 25 units made, it's very special. Just before I went back, the R3 guy told me there's 4 more confirmed booking that day. As of the time I'm typing this, I dunno lol.
Neo IRC may be competitive but it has been re-engineered specifically for the job in hand… but i wonder if you can actually say the production Neo or even this Lotus Racing edition is really that competitive when compared to its competition – especially when you let the real 'hot hatch' like Clio RS compete/priced without the tax barrier… only then we will know if 115k is reasonable or not…

One thing for sure, this car is more purposeful than the TRD Vios not to mention Peugeot 308?!!. Just look at the specs! Ohlins are top drawer suspension item, and rarely comes into production vehicle as does AP Racing brakes, plus the engine is also reworked and tuned N.A style, not just simple boy racer turbo bolt-on item. Close ratio gearbox item is also used. Not to mention the carbon fibre parts. Lotus Engineering must have big input to this car development, together with R3 of course. So it might just be quite reasonable for the RM 100K plus price tag. (Although 145bhp might not sound good enough..maybe taking into account reliability for road use)

This car is re-manufactured by R3…
1. Headlight will transfor into an aquarium head lamp after 1 year. (No surprise, Proton Standard Accessory).
2. Annoying 'geng, geng' sound will appear on the door panel will you whack the volume above 21.
3. Bonnet cable will come off after a year (but you can screw it back yourself)
4. Funny sound from the front absorber (about 30mins every morning, then disapear). Proton fan say it is character but I say it is bull shit
5. Grip is shit (with 17' Potenza Adreneline R001) because the tail is lighter then the front because of the cast iron engine
6. You can't open the boot from outside, must use lever. Proton forget to include it but aquarium headlamp come standard.
7. Glove compartment can only fit 3 box of Durex
8. Fuel consumption is a joke, high fuel consumption but no power
9. Civic 1.8 can easliy reach 222kph for MYR118K, corner better and fuel efficient. Able travel at 120kph @ 2000 rpm, relaxing cruise if you travel allot.
Above is true because I own a Satria Neo 1.6 Can'tPro. The one positive thing I see in a Neo good look. Just like a cute local girl but she can't cook and the sex is not very statisfying.

i can only see this edition is more for showing off that the owner can afford to have Ohlins & AP Racing components etc etc on his/her Satria Neo… but with CPS engine, the car is handicapped by this particular item as it is tuned with only 145hp… you dont need Ohlins susp & AP Racing brakes for that kind of power… it's overkill…
pls install a CPS Turbo with 200hp and sell it for 115k, then may be i will change my mind…

Looks are not bad overall,and 115k for a neo is very much ridiculous and its still a proton…see the displacement…see the horsepower..and is not even worthy to be it…not to mention the branded stuff that had added up and the lotus tuning..without that it makes no different between the normal neo .. lotus engineering yes, but its still badging with proton logo..it wont be a lotus!! and the last thing …why da heck does 1.6cc 145hp needs a AP 4pot ..must be kidding ppl …..what a combination…hope they know what theyre doing … having a great disc doesnt mean its safe for such hp!! this is proton…always came up with some additional addons here the moolah new model has considered reborn…no fresh idea..!! dissapointed
Nice looking car with cool specs, no doubt. i guess if it is mass produced / not limited in numbers, the price tag wouldn't closely trail the £27k spanking new Ford Focus RS. I am talking about spec to spec comparison in monetary terms. I'm sure Proton bought the Ohlins and the AP's at a much lower price than some of us did.

Maybe 145hp is not good enough for rm115k, but who knows, since it is tuned by lotus, maybe at racing track it can overtake faster car during cornering.
On youtube u can view Best Motoring videos of fwd honda integra type-r dc2 200hp naturally aspirated wins over rwd silvia s15 250hp turbocharged on racing track, both factory stock.
And look carefully at power graph (dark blue color), u can see it reach almost 108kw (145hp) from 6300rpm until 7500rpm, so u will have close to max power between those rpm, unlike most naturally aspirated car where it max power will dip considerably as engine rpm decent. Wonder how the engine scream at 7500rpm.
But for me satria gti is still the fastest proton car, less than rm90k, 0-100kmh in 8.3sec….
