McLaren MP4-12C full specs confirmed: 600 PS!

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren has unveiled the full specs sheet for its upcoming McLaren MP4-12C sports car. Under the hood is a longitudinally mid engine installed 3.8 litre V8 that not only redlines at 8,500rpm, but does so with twin turbochargers. No direct injection though. Peak power is 600 PS at 7,000rpm and peak torque is 600Nm from just 3,000rpm all the way up to 7,000rpm – this should be one seriously thrilling engine to both drive and listen to!

The all-aluminium engine has 4 valves per cylinder and a dry sump to help it cope with lubricate requirements during hard driving. Conventional port injection and high boost calls for a low compression ratio of 8.7:1. A large bore to stroke ratio of 93mm to 69.9mm contributes to the engine’s ability to rev high. The engine is mated to a 7-speed “SSG” transmission.

0 to 100km/h takes just 3.3 seconds, and you can shave a further 0.2 seconds off if you use the PZero Corsa tyre option as the car comes standard with mixed size PZeros – 235/35R19 at the front and 305/30R20 at the rear.

SSG= Sequential Sports Gearbox??? Similar to BMW’s SMG and SSG transmission or is it a DCT

FYI BMW’s transmission for non-M was once called SSG too heheh later change it to SMG

Based on interviews when the McLaren sportscar first broke cover well over a year ago, this MP4-12C represents their mid range offering and that there are plans for a product below and above it. The MP4-12C is not intended to be the spiritual successor to the F1. There will be a flagship model for that later on.

MP4-12C cannot be compared to the Mclaren F1

  • Firstly, launch the 600BHP, 1434kg car….
then, for the special edition, for sure the power will be increased, weight will be shredded..
as the saying goes, “saving the best for last”. =)

  • wow, same engine capacity as GTR’s. Nice car though but a GTR is a better buy for me. If compared, GTR’s 500 hp vs Mclaren’s 600hp. hmm, alot expensive than GTR.

I have driven both McLarens, F1 & MP4-12C (*), and find that the F1 has brutal acceleration whereas the MP4’s acceleration is more linear & feels more visceral. Handling-wise, the F1 can be pretty scary as the tail can step out of line when you least expect it. MP4 has more predictable handling. Both engines sound fab esp. in the upper rev range.

(*) – check them out in NFS: Shift! :)

      Agree.

It just don’t have the same wow factor (in term of looks) . It’s just too plain and unexciting for someting that came out from the McLaren factory.

  • For once I thought you had drive both cars in the real world. Haha. But the way you said it was pretty convincing.

On the paper spec, this car has the potential to outperform its obvious rivals – Ferrari 458 Italia & AMG Mercedes SLS and possibly the updated Nissan GT-R. Which means can’t wait for the test!
