All-new Skoda Octavia – third-gen sedan debuts

2H3B8563

Skoda’s C-segment contender the Octavia is now in its third generation, and it carries an updated design language, inspired by the Skoda MissionL Concept.

The new Skoda Octavia has more interior length (1,782 mm), more knee room (73 mm) and more headroom at the back (980 mm). Boot volume is at 590 litres. Other interior dimensions have also increased significantly compared to the second generation Octavia: front head room: + 8 mm, front elbow width: + 39 mm, rear elbow width: + 26 mm. Other dimension changes – front head room: + 8 mm, front elbow width: + 39 mm, rear elbow width: + 26 mm.

Prof. Dr. Ekkehart Baumgartner

Exterior-wise, the Octavia is 90 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the second-generation Octavia. At the same time, the wheelbase has grown by 108 mm, mainly benefiting the interior and space on the rear seats.

Different engines are available, with the top of the line being a 1.8 litre TSI petrol engine that produces 177 horsepower. The most economical version is the Octavia GreenLine, consuming just 3.4L/100km from it’s 108 horsepower 1.6 litre TDI diesel. Manual and DSG automatic gearboxes are available driving the front wheels, with all-wheel drive available soon.

Octavia_Interior

Practicality-wise, there are various standard features and options. There’s a double-sided floor covering in the boot, an ice scraper is placed inside the filler flap, a warning vest holder is located underneath the driver’s seat and a rubbish bin inside the door panel, a multimedia holder for iPod/mobile phone/etc, a large overhead sunglasses compartment, and various other storage bays, holders and hooks.

In terms of safety features, there are a few interesting driver assist systems. From May 2013, there will be a Front Assistant/emergency braking function. Other features include Lane Assistant, which keeps the Octavia on track, multicollision-braking/automatic brake actuation in an accident, Crew Protect Assistant/securing of the vehicle in an accident situation, Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection) or an active front hatch for pedestrian protection. You can have the Octavia with up to 9 airbags, including rear side airbags for the first time in an Octavia.

This car got bad RV. Nothing like Toyota. I encourage everyone to buy Toyota. Eventhough UMW’s charges are exorbitant and it cost more to maintain a Toyota than a BMW, I fully urge you to buy Toyota.

In its main markets it will, like other cars, be offered with a wide variety of engines. It is common to offer a car with engines from 60 to 200 HP. You spend more, you get more. But if you want to save there is always the entry level engine. You can also to a certain degree mix and match specs, so you could have a baseline engine with almost all the options ticked, for example. Only in Malaysia they prepare packages and offer no choice.

Preview of Jetta VII? Interior looks to share some of the new stuff from Golf VII. This Octavia should be based on the new MQB platform right?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
    • rally_fan on Dec 12, 2012 at 12:26 pm

The jetta is already a “VII”. it was launched last year only. if you look at the golf VII, you’ll see that the car now looks more like the current jetta.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 2
      • DonkeyKong on Dec 12, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Not really, the Golf VII’s powertrain and engine bay is different because the EA211 engine is tilted at a different angle than the Jetta’s and Golf VI’s EA111 engine. The current Jetta has more similarities in terms of platform, interior design, exterior design, power train and engine compartment with the Golf VI.

    • Yeah, mostly thanks to their German boss, VW. Nonetheless, Skoda’s latest cars are really good. They dominate most of Eastern Europe today. Too bad most Malaysians don’t realize this. I hardly see any Skoda cars on our roads today. :/

Yup, agreed. Clean and simple lines have more lasting appeal. Hyundai’s fluidic design is starting to look old.. but still not as bad as Alfas.. they tend to look obsolete 1 month after coming out of the showroom..

Handsome car. If only Malaysians could appreciate the not so commong european makes and know this is vw..that owns lambo, audi, seat etc.

Look at the tech and specs. Compare it to say accord or camry.
If this is sold as a honda or toyo in msia…

    The interior is excellent.

Hope to see skodas selling well here.

Clean, simple and handsome exterior and a neat interior. minimalism at is best. And unlike previous gen Octavio, I see little (there is but little) traces of Volkswagen. GREAT JOB SKODA.

  • Had Berjaya and principle VGM can cooperate better to enhance Skoda’s value, ownership experience will be close to VW or Audi brand.

Current distributor simply do not offer adequate efforts to promote Skoda. Having a reasonable price Skoda in diesel guise certainly will help the Czech brand.

Not true. Skoda is developing their cars independent from VW. However they can and do access the VW parts. So they just take their platform, engine etc and design and develop their own cars around it. With the Superb they were so good that reviewers said it was better than the Passat. Much better. As a result VW fired the Skoda boss. If they would have just rebranded that wouldn’t have happened…

  • kadajawi on Dec 13, 2012 at 3:36 pm

VGM should take over sales of Skodas. As they position VW as a premium brand that would make sense. They could use Skoda to go against Ford, Toyota etc. ie. offer the Fabia for 70+k against the Fiesta and Vios. The Octavia can go against C segment cars but offer D segment space. That can sell rather well. Since the parts are all shared between the VW models it would be easy to service and maintain, it could also mean that it is more financially viable to extend the SC network of VW, thus making both brands even more attractive.

They should also bring in the Roomster. Currently there is no alternative in that segment in Malaysia, as Renault doesn’t offer the Kangoo here anymore. It is also much better looking.

I love my 2004 Skoda Octavia 1.8 20 v Laurin & Klement. It was akin to an arranged marriage and not like the love at first sight thing. Its not really pretty from the side but I have grown to love it. It sort of like grows on you day by day. Excellent car and truly value for money. Its a good thing the majority of Malaysian car owners were unaware of this gem.

I am in need of a replacement used or recond auto transmission.Would appreciate some help from you guys out there. Grinding sound on all gears but car does not move. (152,000 km)

    Thanks
