Hyundai announces two new engines at Paris 2014

Hyundai took the opportunity to use Paris 2014 as the stage to unveil two new engines. In line with modern downsizing trends, both engines are small displacement turbocharged direct injection engines.

The smaller of the two engines is a new Kappa 1.0 litre T-GDI three cylinder engine, which will premiere in the new Hyundai i20. The engine can produce 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque, specs that are quite close to Ford’s 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine.

The engine uses an electronically-controlled wastegate for the turbo, and a six-hole GDI injector that operates at 200 bar pressure. It uses a split-cooling concept so the cylinder block can be heated quickly for lower friction and more efficient run, while the cylinder head is kept at a lower temperature to optimise injection and combustion.

The four cylinder engine is the Kappa 1.4 litre T-GDI. It debuts at Paris 2014 in the Hyundai i30 CNG Concept, which kinda throws off the specs that we can expect a bit. Hyundai only released numbers for the engine in CNG mode – 117 PS and 206 Nm. These numbers should be different running on normal petrol, as 117 PS is even less than the 1.0 litre’s 120 PS.

The i30 CNG concept car is also equipped with Hyundai’s new seven-speed dry DCT, which was first announced at Geneva 2014 under the Kia brand. It joins the group’s existing six-speed DCT.

Compare to P1, P2 has different business strategy which is much smarter than P1.

By the way the Hyundai Kappa 1.0 litre T-GDI three cylinder engine completely ‘kapak’ the P2 Axia engine, while ‘Kappa 1.4 litre T-GDI’ completely ‘tapau’ the P1 PCC engine.

After FORM & FIT, finally Hyundai focus on FUNCTION.

    Good move…

Proton just learning on surface of form & fit, and forget about function. Unless it come with 10yrs warranty like what Hyundai did in US in order to convince users&customers on it’s quality. This is how Hyundai build & develop & branding “Hyundai” globally.

Not only that, you coukd see the transformation of engine development from xxx – Gamma – Theta – Nu GDI – Turbocharged GDI

the Hyundai 1.0l turbo obviously is copy Ford’s 1.0 ecoboost. It is nothing wrong of copy but it isn’t a new breakthrough despite it is new thing to Asian automaker.

The 1.4 T-GDI is amazing as it is only 117 PS but generate an amount of torque up to 206 Nm. Imagine VW Golf 1.4 (oversea version with 122hp), the torque is 200 Nm. This is rather good move for Hyundai.

    • ‘as it is only 117 PS but generate an amount of torque up to 206 Nm.’

And at what rpm? 1500 or 4500?
      206Nm @ 4500 rpm won’t bee so good…

many manufacturers already have direct injections in its models line up, but why you think its not on sale in malaysia? the reason is because our high sulphur content petrol is not suitable for direct injections.

the injectors may get clogged and engine feels missing once in a while. already a problem in cars like VW golf with almost all using direct injection (FSI)

A bit of sarcasm, right? yesterday the booking of P2 Axia already reaching 28K units, it could over achieve their target of 30k units by year end.

Congratulation Axia on your 28K booking. It is widely expected isn’t it? But what P2 said they didn’t expect was the booking of the basic specs is higher than their planned allocation and delivery now takes 24-30 months for that spec. It is a bit naive if it is true they didn’t expect that. I sincerely hope P2 do the honourable thing and deliver the cheap cars that people want. Remember, Building Cars People First

Totally agree, the RM24.6K E model is for publicity stunt only, in actual fact P2 is discouraging the people from buying this model.
