Toyota expands US airbag recall – 1.6mil more cars

Toyota Corolla S US-spec

Toyota has announced that it is recalling around 1,584,000 more Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles in the United States over defective front passenger airbag inflators manufacturer by Takata, based on recent information provided by both the Japanese parts maker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

As with similar airbag recalls happening worldwide, the issue at hand concerns a particular type of Takata inflator, which contains a propellant that could degrade through prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high temperature cycling. This could result in an inflator rupture when the airbag is deployed, spraying sharp metal shards at occupants which can cause death or serious injury.

The vehicles affected include the 2009-2011 Toyota Corolla and Matrix, 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2011 Toyota Sienna, 2008-2011 Scion xB, 2007-2011 Lexus ES, 2010-2011 Lexus GS and 2006-2011 Lexus IS. Owners of these vehicles will be notified via first class mail, and dealers will replace either the airbag inflator or the entire airbag assembly, depending on the vehicle model, free of charge.

What comes around goes around, Toyota deserve the shit they are in. They build cars that are unsafe and try to make a profit out of it. Shame….

Pls remember most Japanese cars are known for its reliability and quality, the issue you mentioned about Toyota Msia (Locally manufactured) is the fault of the gov and local manufacturer looking to maximize their profits with the hopes that the brand will sell itself.

Next about airbag inflator, almost all respectable manufacturer (even Ferrari) have been using Takata airbags (is Autoliv also using the propellant supplied by Takata/TK Holdings) but due to manufacturing process /storage (Takata admitted their Mexican subsidiary had mishandled the manufacture of explosive propellants and improperly stored chemicals used in airbags.) This has led millions of cars worldwide being recalled to avoid many more incidents/deaths.

Remember none is happy with recalls cause it effects brand image. But this ensures that car are kept safe. High hopes that all car manufacturers take responsibility for products they make or supply.
