FIRST DRIVE: F39 BMW X2 video review in Lisbon

The latest BMW X1 has been fairly successful for Munich, so why not broaden its appeal still further? Enter the new X2, a sportier “coupé” version of the X1 aimed more for young, fashion-conscious individuals rather than small families, but is there any substance underneath the new style?

It certainly stands out from a design perspective, with details including a trapezoidal double kidney grille, a low-slung glasshouse, BMW badges on the C-pillar (recalling classic BMW coupés) and a choice of standard, M Sport and new M Sport X trims. The inside, however, is pretty much identical to the X1, albeit with a faux leather-wrapped dashboard to lift perceived quality.

At launch, there are 2.0 litre turbo petrol and diesel engines, with variants such as the all-wheel drive 190 hp/400 Nm xDrive20d and 231 hp/450 Nm xDrive25d diesels and the one we’re getting, the front-wheel drive 192 hp/280 Nm sDrive20i petrol. Transmissions include an eight-speed automatic transmission for the diesels and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for the petrol variant.

So, how does the new BMW X2 drive, and has practicality been overly compromised by the swooping styling? Watch the video above as we take the new pretender for a thorough test in Lisbon, Portugal to see what it’s like. You can also read our comprehensive written review here.

The X1 is already expensive at RM230k. This X2 cost RM320k is considered a ripoff. Better buy a GLA or GLC that cost slightly more.

Who buy a X2 ??! Like U say, its aimed more for young, fashion-conscious individuals rather than small families & those who can afford a small “premium” SUV.

At more than RM230k(X1 price), this is quite pricey even for a sporty ‘coupe’ with a BMW badge.

A faux leather-wrapped(fake leather) & low quality dashboard only makes this X2 an Al-Cheapo with a BMW badge that BMW fans claimed to be “Premium” SUV !!

The use of faux leather on dashboards is not uncommon even among premium brands. Together with contrast stitching, it definitely lifts up the look and feel of the interior.

Paying a premium price gets only fake leather. That is called DECEIVING.

It really isn’t. Not much difference between faux leather and real leather now, unless they go for Nappa leather. Nappa is not available in the lower end of premium models, no matter what brand you’re looking at, especially so for use on dashboards.

The steering no, that’s real leather. The seats and dash are all Artico Leather though, equivalent to BMW’s Dakota Leather.
