FIRST LOOK: Range Rover Velar in Malaysia – RM530k

Here’s a quick all-you-need-to-know walk-around video of the Range Rover Velar, just launched here in Malaysia. Priced from RM530k, the premium SUV asks for a lot, but as you’ll see in this clip, it offers a whole lot in return too.

The Velar is meant to slot in between the smaller Evoque and larger, more luxurious Range Rover Sport in the Range Rover line-up. Size wise, it’s half a size larger than compact exec-based SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.

Under the hood is JLR’s 2.0 litre Ingenium turbo four with 250 PS and 365 Nm of torque. Being a Range Rover, power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Zero to 100 km/h takes just 6.7 seconds, and it goes up to 217 km/h.

So, what do you think of the Range Rover Velar – does it have as much wow factor as the Evoque did in 2011?

From RM530k, this half a size larger Velar is more expensive compare to a GLC or X3 not to mention the XC60.

The question is – Does it justify the extra RM200k price tag ??! I think I’ll get a GLC 250 & a A200 & still not look out of place. Hehehe, just an opinion bro. Cheeers

    • It is not competing in that segment. It’s GLE Coupe, X6. But u r right on 1 thing, it’s sub par safety features cannot match that of a 200k cheaper XC60! Shame!

Velar is for the richer guy compared to GLC.
Sunroof should come in as standard.

      • Velar comes from Indian ownership ,TATA. and could be made in India. with Indian quality.

Are you sure Velar is meant for the rich to ride or overprice ride compare to the other premium competitors.

As to us we think the latter and not worth it at all.

Now this is one sleek looking LR. Only problem is its price but it’s better priced compared to the Disco and no you should not be comparing this to the X3 or GLC as its on a different league. It’s like the Ghibli going against the 5er – same class but for different segment of customers….customers with more moolah to be precise.

The significantly higher prices of Porsche Macan and Velar might be due to much smaller volume of sales locally (rather than significantly higher quality compared to BMWs & Mercs). Hence it couldn’t justify local assembly, nor enjoy the hybrid tax incentives like BMWs and Mercs. Parts and services could be pricey too. So, simple logic would suggest that it could be another 15 to 20 years before these brands will have enough number of cars on Malaysian roads to justify CKD cars.

Unless Range Rover takes a long term view, and reduces pricing to a competitive level, raises local sales and shorten the 15 – 20 years period, down to 5 years!
BMW had a better strategy. Competitive pricing, 5-year free maintenance, BMW Credit, road-side assists and etc. We have been paying too much for our premium cars way too long.
