Despite suffering the effects of a wrist broken during training for the 2019 Dakar Rally in Peru, Australian Toby Price, riding for KTM Red Bull, romped home to take the overall lead with a winning margin of 9 minutes 31 seconds. Price came in ahead of overall second place winner team mate Matthias Walkner of Austria with a total time of 33 hours, 57 minutes 16 seconds across the 10-day stage race.
Making it a KTM Red Bull one-two-three was Sam Sunderland of Great Britain, 13 minutes 34 seconds behind. Rounding out the top five was Pablo Quintanilla of Chile and American Andrew Short, both riding Husqvarnas.
Starting the last 112 km stage in reverse order of race standings, Price was last rider to leave the line, behind closest rival Quintanilla. However, the Chilean fell during the stage, handing victory to Price.
Price, who only clinched the overall race lead in stage eight, is no stranger to victory at the Dakar Rally, having previously won the race in 2016. “It was so tight going into the stage this morning, both Pablo (Quintanilla) and I knew we would have to push right from the start. Unfortunately for him, he went too hard off a dune but he really deserves a win too – everyone that starts this race deserves a win,” said Price in a post-race interview.
