QUICK LOOK: 2019 Proton Exora RC, from RM59,800

The 2019 Proton Exora RC (RC for running change) will surely be the MPV’s final update before it heads into retirement. Proton’s seven-seat, three-row people carrier has been around since 2009 (yup, that’s one decade ago) and was refreshed two times prior to this – the Exora Bold made its debut in 2011, followed by an enhancement two years ago.

As you can see here, there are no changes to the Exora’s exterior, save for a shark fin antenna and the new Rosewood Maroon paint option. The 16-inch two-tone alloys, black roof, LED daytime running lights – they were all there before. Move inside and you’ll see some obvious changes, however.

The headlining item is the seven-inch touchscreen head unit with “Hi Proton” functions, as introduced by the X70 and recently seen on the 2019 Iriz and Persona facelifts. Also new are things like the instrument cluster (as seen on the Iriz/Persona), “borderless” rear view mirror and two USB ports plus one 12V socket – an improvement on the previous single USB port.

The dashboard’s centre stack has a new look – the clock has been deleted, it’s now finished in piano black with a silver bezel, and there’s ‘Proton’ lettering below the head unit. The seats are now part-leatherette with a quilted pattern that’s repeated on the door cards.

The 1.6 litre Campro turbocharged with 140 PS/205 Nm is a carry-over, but the CVT’s SAT (stepped automatic transmission) button has been deleted as Proton found that few used it. Other under-the-skin improvements not listed in the brochure are improved suspension tuning and engine mounts for lower NVH. Proton also worked to reduce cruising wind noise.

Perhaps the bigger news is the price reduction and packages from Proton. The Exora is available in two variants – the Executive at RM59,800 and the Premium for RM66,800, OTR without insurance. That’s a RM2,208 and RM2,547 reduction in price, respectively, compared to the outgoing Executive/Executive Plus.

Proton is throwing in a service package with three times free labour service, and free 1GB of data for five years. There’s also a special insurance coverage package and low interest rates from 2.76% per annum.

That’s not all. Those buying the Exora this year (before 31 December) will get five years (or 11 times) of free labour service. In addition, the first 1,000 buyers get a bonus of two years free road tax (one year for company registration). Include the value of the freebies and packages, the lower OTR price, and the early bird bonus, and the total value added over the previous Exora is RM4,233 for the Executive and RM5,652 for the Premium.

It’s a lot of car for the money. Let Hafriz Shah walk you through the changes in the video above, and check out CarBase.my for the full spec list and spec comparison.

This MPV should have been discontinued at the first place as this MPV is already aging, design looks outdated, lack of safety features and some engine problems. I don’t understand why Proton still want to give the aging Exora another facelift since Perodua have their own game changing MPV called Alza that already become the game changer in it’s segment. Rather than giving facelift to this game over MPV, Proton should spend their money to do more R&D to create a game changer.

Hahah dumbo, that game changer is in the works, don’t worry. In the meantime, what’s wrong with giving a little improvement like Voice Command at a cheaper price now?

Where is Alza’s replacement I wonder, is it in the works too?

That is coming for sure. This is a measure to give more value to buyers of a model that is still selling decently till the new one comes.

Actually, I just red the articles about New FL 2019 Exora yesterday. Although, Exora should update more features, smoother engines and safety features as well. However, even though Exora is cheap, it just new Facelift as you can’t expect to have advanced safety features and powerful engines like what X70 are currently selling in Malaysia but only having more features such as audio infortainment system. Until, you will see Future New Exora then you will definitely will be more impress in having powerful engines, advanced safety features, many equipments and many features

Malaysians are so happy with the cheaper pricing.

But it is sad, after China company took over only, Proton decides to give cheap pricing to Malaysians

Proton should have done this 20 years back, being a Malaysian National car company, it should have given cheaper cars to their rakyat long before

  • I have some query on this statement:

“The dashboard’s centre stack has a new look – the clock has been deleted”

How can you “delete” a clock in a car? You don’t delete physical item. The writer must be from IT background.. Should said “the clock has been removed”

The term ‘Delete’ is widely used on car parts and car accessories by the car customization cultures.
There’s nothing wrong with writer’s used of that word.

Proton always come with the game spot the different while launching FL model, and the quiz is deep if it were not being highlighted. It was the freaking same engine, same gearbox and almost same exterior design with minor update. Why bother to repackage the old model in such a competitive era. It is completely stupid decision to buy this new FL despite the price was slightly cheaper.

This Exora was launched in year 2009 Apr (CPS version), it was 10 over years old model and Geely expect the life cycle should prolong up to 15 years with this so called new FL?

I don’t think they ever referred to it as a facelift. It is merely a running change to give more value (higher specs with lower price) to those who still want this model.

Sooo many negative and stupid comment. Dont know why sooo many haters and why they hate sooo much about proton. Majority of these haters never bought or drive a proton before. Always want cheap but high quality cars, thats stupid. Alza a game changer? Seriously? How stupid can u be? Spend money for r&d? Do u know how much money it cost to do a r&d? U think perodua r&d their cars? Do u know how long perodua has been using the same engine, same transmission, same underpinning for almost all of its cars? Proton decides to give cheap cars after chinese company took over? Where have been all this while? U dont do price per class/size comparison between proton cars and other rivals? Or u cant even do simple calculation? Stupid is it? Complaint about high fuel consumption for this big of a mpv? Again with this kind of stupid comment. Want to do a fuel consumption comparison between a mpv (this big) and small compact car is stupid. Even if u want to compare with alza its still wont be a no brainer. U put it side by side, visually already know which one will consume more fuel. Malaysian, sooo many stupid haters, but claim to know all about cars. Its just plain stupid.

You miss out the point. The CFE engine isn’t powerful and refine and the punch CVT is proven less efficiency. Unless you ignore all these facts and blindly protect your beloved proton. Alza is smaller than Exora is no doubt, but new Aruz (replace Alza) launched in 2019 is COMPLETELY new inside out (engine is new dual vvti, gearbox unsure).

Now people are not talking about Alza coz no longer produce, but they do compare with Aruz. Do you think Aruz is small? If yes then you must be a dumb ass coz Aruz is way better than Alza. If you said Exora turbo is powerful then it must be a joke. Exora turbo 0-100km/h is 13.3sec and Aruz is about 14.5sec. REMEMBER Aruz isn’t turbined, the figure is slow but not embarrass like Exora with TURBO. And fuel consumption is truely embarrass for Exora with such a “slow figure” giving high fuel consumption.

About quality, this one no arguement at all where Exora is way behind. Unless you brainlessly thought Exora is better quality than Aruz which indirectly a Toyota car.

Both mark 10 years long but Perodua replaced Alza with Aruz but Proton aka Geely still insist to FL their Exora.

Actually i hv always like exora, but due to known reliability issue, high fuel consumption and 2nd row cant slide, at last end up booked brv. Never regret getting brv, fuel efficiency good, performance ok, handling ok.Still can seat 7 comfortably.

I bought a car for mixed driving..not always go outstation. I went to genting with 6ppl, no issue at all..still can overtake lots of cars..every1 enjoyed.
BRV average fuel 13.5km/ltr, full tank around rm60. I hv another toyota 1.5cc car, i felt brv just slighlty less power than it. Agreed Exora more powerful, and really tempted to buy it but for daily driving and reliability i choose brv. Of coz brv not a perfect car, but it met my objective.

For those who need fuel subsidy, cheap this and cheap that, then, best to look for Grab. Way cheaper. Or stick to the next cheapest thing around if you have a few more bucks cos that’s where you belong.

  • To exora owners who have excessive vibration at steering wheel and gear knob stick, especially when engine idling. It could be because of engine mountings. Please refer to sc asap. You dont want to get gearbox problem and have to replace new one like mine.

Here’s my guess. The Innova is very expensive for an ASEAN car. Meaning low spec construction etc. So, they make lots of profit with that as compared to Proton which needs to sell at low margins. This is because of the ‘national’ car image isn’t it? Must sell at charity price right? So with high margins, Toyota can afford to throw high discounts right?

My guess is that is why they chose the Toyota.
