Proton Gen2 GTi rendered as a four-door hot hatch!

Proton Gen2 GTi rendered as a four-door hot hatch!

A little over three years ago, former Proton CEO Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff revealed that there were plans for the national automaker to explore a wagon-bodied version of the Gen2, as well as a new generation model of the Satria Neo. There were many other plans in the pipeline, but a high-performance Gen2 was never part of the picture.

With that, rendering whiz Theophilus Chin took matters into his own hands and created the Gen2 GTi. It’s named exactly after what it is – a Gen2 fitted with Satria GTi parts. The shared components are plenty obvious – the hot hatch’s front bumper with integrated circular fog lamps is featured here in full, with the only difference being the grille design (unchanged from the pre-facelift Gen2).

You’ll also spot the black plastic strip running the length of the Gen2, complete with the “GTi 16V” badge on the rear doors. It does look a little out of place, perhaps because the original moulding was slimmer, had tapered edges, and was positioned slightly higher.

Proton Gen2 GTi rendered as a four-door hot hatch!

The GTi’s riveted wheel arches find their way here, naturally, as have the iconic 16-inch six-spoke silver alloys. The actual car didn’t have yellow calipers, mind you, but these were borrowed from the masterfully rebuilt 2000 Proton Satria GTi by Dream Street Restoration.

Towards the back, you’ll spot traces of the actual hot hatch in the lower half of the bumper design, including the dual rectangular exhaust finishers. The tail lights featured here are taken from the final batches of the first generation Persona, while the boot spoiler is borrowed from the Gen2 CPS.

Since this is just a rendering, we’ll leave the powerplant to your imagination. Anyone will prefer having the Satria GTi’s fabled 4G93P 1.8 litre DOHC four-cylinder engine here, but if you get to make the call, what would be the engine of your choice? Tell us what you think of this rendering and your engine choice, below. You can also watch a sped-up version of the actual rendering in the video below.

Talk about lazy creativity. Worst submission by Theo. By a mile. I can’t do it of course but if I could, I’d put some effort on front and rear light clusters, grill, side wing mirrors…

    • The Proton Satria GTi was launched in 1998 with a 140PS (103 kW) 1.8-litre Mitsubishi-sourced 4G93P engine (“P” for Proton), originally found in the Mitsubishi Lancer GSR.

    Matt,

High performance Gen-2 was never part of the picture?

Maybe you are too young to remember about the Gen-2 MME limited edition. It has engine upgrades that makes 12hp more than the standard Gen-2. The suspension is also 25mm lower to help with the handling.

I worked on this and boringly looked at the rocker wheel arch joint… IMO the sheet metal should have been like that. The metal encapsulated the door opening. No aesthetic need and potential assembly complications. Politics rather than my input dictated that decision… But that’s another story!

Maybe a Satria Neo as base model will work with GTIs manioulation. Hey, give it a try Theo.

Why prefacelift bumper? A go faster car should use facelift front with the bigger cooling capacity for a powerful engine. Quite a mismatch since Gen2 facelift with the smoked headlamps itself is a handsome car so less is better, perhaps slammed down suspension, those GTI inspired wheel arches, a functional wing instead of rear spoiler, and low profile tyres.

For the power train, I would have chosen petronas e-01 2 liter NA 200 hp engine and maybe a twin staged turbo with Getrag 7 speed transmission.

  • Without any changes in Proton, do you expect there is a change in Proton cars? Chief engineer and chief designer both have to be changed if we expect changes from Proton.

If this picture came out 10 years ago, I will be really excited. But time has changed and as we have seen better car exterior design, I think this woild only be relevant for those who still drives the trusty and reliable Gen2.
