Johor company produces electric school buses for US

Johor bus coachbuilder and assembler Gemilang International Limited (GML) has secured a contract to deliver 140 electric school buses to California as part of its mission to promote environmentally-friendly buses and bus bodies. The company has been supplying electric buses to the United States since 2018.

“In fact, GML has been supplying bus bodies for various EV makers such as BYD and CRRC to several markets including Malaysia, Singapore, Australia since 2015, and we expect more countries to catch up with the transition to EVs as an increasing number of climate change mitigation commitments have been announced by governments around the globe,” said chairman and CEO Pang Chong Yong.

Pang said the deal for 120 units of 12-metre and 20 units of 7.5-metre school buses was not only a US-market breakthrough but also the single largest order of electric buses GML has ever received. The electric school bus market in America is said to be enormous and has the potential for exponential growth.

That’s thanks to the country’s recently-signed US$1.2 trillion (RM5 trillion) infrastructure deal that commits US$2.5 billion (RM10.5 billion) to purchasing electric school buses for districts across the US. “With the new plan to convert all 500,000 US school buses to zero emission vehicles, we are confident to capture more market share with our three decades of industry experience as well as our main competitive advantage – the aluminium lightweight superstructure,” Pang added.

The company has a 30-year history in designing and manufacturing bus bodies and assembling buses for over 30 years, including supplying aluminium buses for RapidKL and Rapid Penang, GoKL and MRT’s feeder service for the last 13 years. Recently, it has built buses for the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) and Sabah’s electric bus pilot project, as well as the first electric city bus for the Kuching Metro.

According to the article, ‘bus bodies’, meaning they just do the coachwork or body. However the ‘rolling gear’ or electric propulsion system mounted on the chassis is not from them. No technology transfer or homegrown technology. They should invest in capable staff to develop

  • Gemilang is among the biggest coach builder in the world, not surprised they gotten this contract. They are reputable for building nearly all of the public busses used in Singapore HK and more, showcasing the strength of Malaysia private industry and exposing further the weakness of the government.

If Bumi buys 51% why not be given controlling rights? Are they the only kind of majority shareholder that cannot be given a say? Such prejudice!

If you actually invest into the company with 51% of your money, u will surely be given controlling rights.
But the kronies expect to be given free 51% share.
          Dont u understand the problem?
This free 51% share is only given to few bumi kronies, it does not benefit any of the public or bumis at hand. It is only a policy to enrich the kronies….

          • Where is this verifiable news that GML is forced to give 51% share away to bumi kronis, please. Even if sold below market price what’s the problem? There are some in their opposite camp that thinks selling below market price is okay what.

That they are this strong is a reflection of how strong is the Government. A strong enterprise is not a weakness.

Hope they don’t ” steal” your company by forcing an equity sale to take over, smirks, nothing good is ever left over untouched in this God forsakened ” country”

They should have just kept it quiet. Soon you will lose 51%, hope when the time comes they have to decide either to give in or relocate. I really hate these freeloaders and thieves that are legitimized by the government at the expense of someone else hard work and capital.
