Statistics released by the police have revealed that a total of 402,626 road accidents were recorded in Malaysia from January to September this year, resulting in 4,379 fatalities. This is a jump from the 255,532 road accidents from the same period last year, in which 3,324 deaths were recorded.
The numbers for the first nine month of 2022 year represents a 58% increase (or 147,094) in accident cases over that in 2021, while the death toll increased by nearly 32% (or 1,055 fatalities). There was no breakdown of the statistics by state and the vehicles involved in the data, which was furnished in a statement by the road transport department (JPJ).
While the numbers are telling, it is also worth noting that there was less traffic movement across the country at certain points last year due to movement control orders and restrictions being implemented during the pandemic, possibly contributing to less mishaps occuring.
In addition to the action taken by police to monitor compliance with traffic laws, the department said it would be continuing with its own enforcement operations and also in its efforts to advocate road safety in a bid to reduce the rate of accidents and deaths.

Exactly. It’s better to MCO lockdown , saved life
1055 died in 9 months…50 % can be avoided,if drivers observe DRIVING SOPs.
We cant achieve zero covid or driving fatalities, but REDUCTION is possible.
Maybe a simple correlation of more accidents due to increased traffic (post lock down) and local drivers have never been the patient type. Most want to get to their destinations (or accidents) irregardless of the other uses.
16people died everyday. please be responsible when we drive.
Still will not reduce the price of goods…
funny thing is most of it not related to drink driving but the majority will claim its drink driving…such a big fail
Most accidents are unpredicted but drunk driving accidents are unnecessary. If it can be avoided it should be avoided.
Drunk driving is a serious offence in European countries where alcohol is cheap. In some countries your car will be confiscated, even without accident.
Mean while in Malaysia, Basikal Lajak is allowed
In Europe, cars must yield to cyclers on the road. Cyclers & pedestrians are king here. So?
Germany: 2562 traffic fatalities @ 84 million people. Insurance for small motorbikes (125cc) is extremely expensive there (more expensive than the insurance premium for big bikes). Therefore our kapchais are unafordable for most of the youths there.
Why is it they usually don’t breakdown the fatalities to vehicle types? As always, motorcyclist should top the list yet authorities are still lax on “encouraging” motorcyclist to ride safer.
No political will?
Greetings, Mr. Paul Tan. I believe the fact that Malaysia ranks 2nd in the world in terms of traffic fatalities means that our whole transportation system and ecosystem is at fault. This includes driver education and behaviour, law enforcement, as well as road conditions and infrastructure.
However, we don’t seem to demand hard enough for the relevant authorities to fix these issues such as Kementerian Pengangkutan and Kementerian Kerja Raya.
I hope you can lead a movement to demand improvements to our transportation system and ecosystem. Or else, I fear that all of us and our loved ones may be the next tragedy we read in the newspaper.
Thank you.
Common Malaysian driver attitude is like never give way, rider or driver, like to squeeze and overtake you, never give the signal, speed more than 50kmh in a residential area, and drive 60kmh on a fast lane. Rider overtakes you from your blind spot as if they are going to heaven. Rider ride too slow on 1 way lane like snails. At the bottleneck, driver or rider never give way to the front car and try squeeze tru, and hit your side mirror. Such rider and driver attitude can die faster than the light to meet their maker. Covid patients died so many people, and we are all scared. People died of road accidents as many as Covid but gov doesnt care, all talk no action.
