Malaysia proposes single clearance system at Causeway to reduce congestion at JB-SG crossing

The Causeway jam is a daily reality for many who commute daily to Singapore from Johor, two times a day, five days a week. Hours on the road before actual work starts sounds like a pain; then again, there’s always a price to pay for everything, and these Johor residents cum Singapore workers are the forex champions of the world.

Anyway, to ease congestion at the world’s busiest land crossing, Malaysia has proposed a single clearance system, where clearance would only be done on either side of the border, once.

“This means Singapore’s immigration officers will be stationed at our checkpoints in Johor to clear people entering the republic, while Malaysian immigration personnel will be deployed in Singapore to clear those entering Malaysia,” Johor works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh told The Star.

“This proposal is still at the initial stages. This will be similar to the system that will be used when the Rapid Transit System operations begin in 2026,” he added.

The daily reported that during the recent visit of PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the island state, Johor MB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi appealed for the traffic situation at the Causeway to be brought under control, saying that daily commuters, which number around 150,000, have to face great inconvenience. The MB said that the majority of daily Johor-SG commuters had to get up at 4am to queue at the JB border checkpoint by 5am, and return late at night.

Single clearance system aside, Fazli, who heads a multi-agency taskforce looking into reducing border congestion, said the southern state was seeking additional funds to increase motorcycle lanes. There’s also a proposal for lorry lanes to be used for passenger traffic during weekends.

Nothing new. We propose a flyover to be built over the causeway to zoom over buses & cars. Motorbikes & lorries use the present causeway. Charge a fee.

Malaysia bears the social cost, Singapore reap the taxes. Request Singapore to setup hostels for Malaysian working in Singapore.

Scan IC to capture details instead of passport. This is only for Malaysian and Singaporean. This will definitely cutting off processing time.

  • Look for fast clearance system improvement at software. Currently some passport during biometric take more than 50 to 60sec.
Also some time hang during scanning the passport and need to do twice.
All depending how fast speed on microprocessor.

The car and motorcycle clearance complex at Johor Bahru checkpoint is seriously flawed, the entrance to the building bottlenecks by ending up with 2 lanes only from 5 lanes from multiple entrance point. Both sides of the complex be it arrival or departure has same issues, this building is relatively new (around 10 yrs old) but the design is outdated, didn’t the planner factor in the transport load for the coming years, on top of that, both car arrival and departure lanes in JB checkpoint consists of more than 50 counters each way, unfortunately only 10 to 15 counters works on any good day. If more counters open daily, curb lane/queue cutter and a better software for clearance; (it takes 20 to 30 seconds in Singapore as opposed to Malaysian system which takes up to 40 to 60 seconds per passport) the jam can be minimized. This is my observation as a daily traveler using JB Checkpoint.

The problem will not solve. Everyone traveling to work in Singapore know the true reason. The congestion caused by Sg-customs is the way to curb the outflow of money from Singapore. So the workable solutions is for those whose earn less to traveling back JB daily, and for those earn more please stay in Singapore, and spend money there to help the local retailers.

Build a walkalator between the two immigrant booths. People can reach other side within 15 minutes. This will reduce the no of cars and buses .congestion will be very much less.
