Heico releases limited edition V70 T6 AWD R-Design

Famous Volvo tuner Heico Sportiv, in partnership with the Swedish marque itself, has released a special edition of the V70 T6 AWD R-Design. Only 100 of these metallic sapphire black cars will be made for the German market priced at a hefty 70,193 euros!

For that princely sum, the output from the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six has been increased to 325 hp from the standard 304 hp, while maximum torque gets a 20 Nm hike to 460 Nm from 2,100 to 4,200 rpm. Paired to a six-speed auto, this AWD wagon does the benchmark 0-100 sprint in just 5.9 seconds while top speed is the usual electronically limited 250 km/h. Responsible for the increased performance is a recalibrated ECU and a sport exhaust system.

Driving dynamics has been uprated with sport suspension, shock absorbers and springs. The ride is lowered by 30 mm and those big wheels you see are of 19 inches wide with 245/35 Pirelli tyres. The package also includes an extra set of original Volvo R-Design 18-inch wheels with winter tyres.

The standard R-Design package comes with colour-coded door sills and bumpers, roof spoiler, mirror casings in a matte chrome finish and chrome detailing for the fog-lamps. Heico throws in chrome exhaust tips and a special trunk emblem. Inside, Heico adds aluminum door pins and a special edition plaque to the already well specified R-Design spec.

Mitsuoka Like – electric car based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Ever thought that the cute Mitsubishi i-MiEV needed to be redesigned by people as eccentric as the creators of the Orochi? Well, if for some reason you have such thoughts you’ll be pleased to know that they have.

Mitsuoka, which have typically developed cars based on Nissans, has released a new five seat electric vehicle called the Like. Originally meant for four, Mitsuoka have stretched the length of the i-Miev by 175mm and have fitted another seat.

Apart from the 5 seats, the car features a more dragon-esque front end, while the front and rear bumper have new metal plating. Customers in Japan will have on option of five different colours for the body.

This has yet to be confirmed, but the Like will most likely also feature the i-MiEV’s powertrain capable of producing 63hp and an instantaneous 180Nm of torque. Whatever it is, an EV powertrain is definitely confirmed as the car will receive Japanese government subsidies meant only for EV cars.

Mitsuoka Japan are taking orders for the vehicle now and will start delivering the first Like in August 2010. The price for this pint-sized dragon will be 4,280,000 yen (RM 151,624), but the Japanese government will subsidize purchase of the EV by 1,140,000 yen (RM 40,386).

Hyundai Sonata Test Drive Report from Oman

Few years ago, some said the Koreans were coming. They were right, because the Hyundais and Kias of one generation ago weren’t good enough to have arrived – coming yes, arrived no. But if you haven’t noticed, things have changed over the past few years – Hyundai-Kia is now the fourth largest carmaker in the world, ahead of all Japanese rivals except for Toyota, and is clearly on the up.

Products like this sixth-generation Hyundai Sonata (codenamed YF) reflect the brand’s current standing. Still good value, still has that long warranty, but now with attributes that appeal not only to the value conscious. Things like quality, class leading figures and design flair were almost never spoken in the same sentence as “Hyundai”, but the YF changes this. We drive Hyundai’s eye opener in Muscat, Oman.

Lotus unveils 5-year business plan – Lotus Cars set to go against Ferrari and Porsche?

Proton and Lotus LogoThere are some very interesting things in store ahead for Proton’s Group Lotus, and we had a preview of some of it today. Proton hopes that these list of new happenings for Lotus will be able to turn it into a profitable company within 5 years. Lotus has never made a profit in the decade that it’s been under Proton ownership.

New Management

Proton (and Lotus) Chairman Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh started with bringing in new management – we saw ex-Ferrari man Dany Bahar appointed as the new CEO of Group Lotus back in October last year.

Dany then brought in a whole list of new employees including Ferrari Director of Design Donato Coco (who was also previously at Citroen before Ferrari), Andreas Schlegel from Aston Martin marketing and network development, Andreas Prillmann who was Director of Sales and Business Development at Ferrari, Robert Hentschel from EDAG USA and Frank Tuch who was Director of Quality Management at Porsche, amongst many other new team members.

We were given a full list of new management credentials and the long list was very impressive. Dany Bahar likened the new Lotus management team to the Real Madrid football team. This is the team that will spearhead Lotus into the next five years. Lotus has big ambitions. Be prepared for a shocker here – it wants to diversify from its current niche market positioning and move into the premium sportscar segment dominated by marques such as Ferrari and Porsche.

New Product Line-Up

By 2015, Lotus wants to be selling cars that cost between 100,000 to 130,000 Euro, with annual sales increased from between the current 2,000 to 2,500 cars a year to as much as 6,000 to 8,000 cars a year. Its new motto – “Tomorrow’s luxury sports car, today.” Lotus currently has presence in 30 markets worldwide, and it wants to add another 25 potential markets to this list.

New Lotus cars will move away from its current manual transmission only and bare necessity lightweight positioning. The cars will go upmarket and become more complex. New Lotus cars will have features such as 7-speed twin clutch transmissions, active aerodynamics, continuously variable dampers, hybrid and range extender systems, heads up displays, and something interesting – the option for alcohol fueling.

We were shown sketches of some upcoming Lotus cars in the presentation today but we were asked not to snap photos of the presentation so I respected that. But they looked pretty aggressive and sporty and there were various bodytypes.

There wasn’t any SUV model in sight though, so no indication of any Lotus APX production car built on the VVA architecture. I believe there will be a Lotus concept car shown at the Paris Motor Show this year, as Lotus PR UK have just sent out a PR release advising us to watch out for something unexpected at Paris.

It’s not to say that Lotus will be leaving behind its roots – I believe that the likes of the Elise will continue to be sold, but these new Lotus cars will fill niches that the company is not currently in, segments filled by products such as the Ferrari 599 and 612 for example. It won’t be easy though. The engines of cars such as Ferrari and Porsche very much influence their character and brand. Lotus do not have their own engine – most if not all are Toyota-sourced.

But I won’t say it’s a bad thing if the screaming V10 from the Lexus LF-A (even if detuned) is used by Lotus in a future Lotus Esprit successor – that wonderful howl should be experienced by more and not just limited to the small number of LF-As around! Wishful thinking aside, there are many other engines from Toyota’s Lexus stable that Lotus could use, such as the numerous front longitudinally mounted rear wheel drive V8 engines used in the IS-F, the GS and the LS.

There was also word in the past that the upcoming Esprit would be receiving a BMW engine – the twin turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 in particular. That engine’s output is able to challenge the Ferraris and Porsches that we’re talking about competing with. BMW is not closed to offering the use of its engines in other maker’s products – it supplies a 6-potter turbodiesel to Carbon Motors for their police car, Morgan uses BMW engines in its cars, and the legendary McLaren F1 also had BMW power.

Lotus Cars’ very own Aston Martin Cygnet?

There’s also something interesting in the works – apparently Lotus will also have its own version of the Proton EMAS concept by Giugiaro. At its Geneva unveiling, the EMAS already had a Lotus Range Extender engine fitted in it, or at least that’s what the spec sheet said. Proton and Lotus unveiled today a plan to jointly develop and sell the Proton EMAS.

The Proton version will be sold in Asia and the Middle East and will feature a 5-door hatchback body, while Lotus will sell a 3-door sports city car globally. Both Proton and Lotus models will feature similar combustion engine and/or hybrid powertrains and will essentially feature the same mechanical underpinnings, however there will be a high level of exterior and interior differentiation. The Proton will be a Proton and the Lotus will be a Lotus.

Lotus Engineering

Lotus is more than just cars of course. You also have Lotus Engineering, an engineering firm that competes with the likes of EDAG, LG CNS, Magna Steyr and etc. Even though Proton owns Lotus Engineering, they admit that they haven’t been working that closely with them to use their engineering expertise for Proton cars so far in the decade of ownership. The two companies plan to change this from now on. Thus far, projects awarded to Lotus by Proton has always been on an ad hoc basis only and total projects awarded to Lotus by Proton in the past decade have only totaled up to 95 million British Pounds so we can expect this to increase in the future.

Lotus Engineering is also collaborating with automotive and engine component company Fagor Ederlan to put the 1.2 litre three-cylinder Lotus Range Extender engine into production. They have just completed a joint technical and market study and have decided on the best way to start production for the engine. The engine has been designed specifically for range extender usage – it is tuned for making a certain amount of power at certain RPM thus is designed to be coupled to a Range Extender’s power generator and not to a gearbox.

This is the big picture of the Lotus 5-year plan and we were told that Proton and Lotus management would be “locking themselves up in a room” over the next 2 days to have continuous brainstorming meetings. No doubt there will be coffee and perhaps currypuffs to fuel their thoughts so here’s a toast of Ipoh White Coffee to the future of Lotus and we eagerly await to see what Lotus unveils at this year’s Paris Motorshow!

2011 Suzuki Swift – more pictures released

Suzuki have released new pictures of the 2011 Suzuki Swift that was just revealed earlier this month. The new pictures include interior shots and gives you a better idea of the Swift’s design, as it includes rear end shots that were not available before.

The engine options available so far for the European market include a 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.3-litre turbo diesel, which we now know produces 75 horsepower at 4,000 RPM, while 190Nm of torque is produced at 1,750 RPM. A five speed manual gearbox will be offered as standard with both petrol and diesel engines, and there is an optional four speed automatic transmission for the petrol engine.

The diesel powered engine only sips 4.2 litres for every 100 kilometres travelled, while the petrol engine consumes 5.0 litres of fuel for every 100 kilometres travelled. Included with the new pictures is a spec sheet for both the 5-door and the 3-door models.

Leaked pictures of F11 BMW 5-Series M-Sport package

These are pictures of what the new M-sport package will look like on the 2011 BMW 5-Series. The pictures were obtained from a brochure and is of the F11 BMW 5-Series Touring. No doubt that the same package will be available for the F10 sedan.

Thanks to BimmerToday, we now know that the M-sport package will have a reworked front end with bigger air ducts, sporty side skirts, integrated rear diffuser and chrome tailpipes.

The package will also offer sportier 18 and 19-inch wheels, while the inside will feature a three spoke steering wheel, a new design for the seats and gear shift knob with M-sport branding. Unfortunately, there is no mention of performance upgrades, which is as usual with the M-sport packages. Now that BMW has adjustable dampers on the car, a harder M-sport suspension seems a little less appealing than before.

Lumma Design CLR X 650 M revised to produce 670hp

Lumma Design brought out the CLR X 650 M a while back and have now revised their kit. It now packs added punch – Power output has been increased to 670hp which is a 3 percent rise from the previous tune and a total 20 percent rise from the X6 M engine. This has also naturally increased pulling power which now stands at an impressive 850Nm of torque, a small bump up from 830Nm on the previous model.

The revised super SUV achieves this hike in power over the previous CLR X 650 M with the help of a new high-performance exhaust system with quad tailpipes. The mods also pushes the car to a top speed of 312km/h.

Driving dynamics have been improved by lowering the car by 45mm with lowering springs. The car sits on Racing IV 9.5×20-inch alloy wheels. This is enveloped with performance tires that should maintain adequate enough grip on the road, considering the kind of torque torture that the rubber will be facing.

Outside, the SUV gets a redesigned rear skirt and wing, along with a three-section front spoiler with daytime LED runners, flared fenders, revised side sills and new carbon and Kevlar hood. Inside you get comfy looking quilted leather upholstery, carbon trim and aluminium pedals. Look after the jump for a picture gallery.

Saab hires ex Ferrari P4/5 designer to work on 9-3 model

It was only few weeks ago that Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker, was discussing the direction that their new acquisition, Saab Automobile, was taking. Since then, they have really stepped up their game, as the company announced the appointment of former Pininfarina and Bertone designer, Jason Castriota as director of design.

Yes, this is the same Jason Castriota that designed the Ferrari P4/5, Maserati Gran Tourismo and Bertone Mantide. Saab now wants Castriota to produce designs that will take on the likes of BMW’s 3-Series and Audi’s A4 who have the monopoly in that segment.

First on his list is the new Saab 9-3 which is set for a 2012 release and the design focus will centre on the aerodynamics of the new sedan. The 9-3 has of course already been designed internally as it is only less than 2 years to 2012, but Castriota will work on enhancing the design. The 9-3 is an important model as it is one of the cheaper Saab models and it provides an entry path into building brand loyalty for the brand.

“It’s absolutely vital we get this car right. This is Saab returning to its roots, not having to worry about being part of a much larger machine that they were before in the GM organization,” said Castriota.

This is in-line with Saab’s plan of becoming a profitable business by 2012. Now that they’re not restricted by the shackle that was General Motors design, they can release “premium models more distinct and sporty in their design.”

According to Muller, who has seen the 9-3’s design, it will be completed within weeks and “is truly aircraft-inspired and Swedish-clean.” It will be exciting to see what this supposed design would look like as there are still remnants of GM in this 9-3. Thus if successful, the car will be a testament to Castriota’s skills, giving the company total confidence in the designers abilities when working on their ‘mini-rival’ 9-2 project.
