Catch our Honda HSV-010 Super GT Racer live interview at 3 PM today on Facebook!

Honda HSV-010

If you’re a fan of Super GT you would know that Honda has retired the NSX from the race and have replaced it with the new Honda HSV-010 GT race car, a model that’s not available for production as of yet. The HSV-010 is a front engine, rear wheel drive car and competes in the GT500 class. It’s powered by a 3.4 litre V8 engine. In case you’re curious, HSV stands for Honda Sports Velocity.

The car is definitely production ready for sure as Super GT is meant to be for production cars. Honda has actually managed to find a loophole in the Super GT rulebook that permits cars that are production ready to be fielded, so the car doesn’t actually have to be in production, although I’m sure a lot of you would like to see such a car in production!

We’ll be having a joint interview together with Zerotohundred with the Honda today at 3 PM on Honda Racing Malaysia’s Facebook Fan Page. It should be very interesting as this is not a car in production so there won’t be any “test drive reviews” to read from the world’s media. The only information we’re going to get are from Honda themselves.

Perhaps we can grill them to put the car into production :P Come drop by and watch the interview and participate in the Q&A section later.

UPDATE: Read the full interview here.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta revealed – no surprises!

Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, which is the sedan version of the Mk6 Golf hatchback. The Jetta, which received an American premiere at NYC’s Times Square will be priced from around $16,000, which is lower than the base price of its predecessor and should see it go head on with the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus sedan in the US. The launch tagline is “great, for the price of good.”

VW has high hopes for the Jetta in the US, which is understandable as the car is said to offer best in class rear legroom, a premium interior and a driving experience from the class above. “The 2011 Jetta is a class-up driving experience with the kind of styling, design and power under the hood normally found in more expensive luxury cars. At an extremely attractive price, this car is sophisticated, fun to drive and practical,” gushed Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen America.

As with all new models, the Jetta has grown from the Mk5 Golf based car. Width and height are unchanged, but the new car is longer by 86 mm to make 4.64 metres. The familiar Golf 2,578 mm wheelbase has been extended to 2,650 mm for this application. Not so much a luxury as a must, as classmates like the Honda Civic have set the benchmark at 2,700 mm.

In terms of looks, the Jetta wears VW’s latest design theme with sharp lines and clean surfaces. They call it “timeless elegance and dynamic styling”, we say it’s a handsome car, if a little conservative. But that’s what people love and expect from VW; those looking for bold, avantgarde design will have to look elsewhere. Accurately previewed by the Detroit 2010 NCC show car, notable design cues include the gloss black long grille, well defined but not aggressive wheelarches and the prominent shoulder line or “tornado line” in VW speak. Rims can be up to 18 inches in size.

Inside, most will think that the Jetta’s dash is lifted straight from the Golf; it looks so, but that’s not the case. Although the layout is familiar, the main dash moulding is squarer in the Jetta. Here, the instrument binnacle hood “flows” into the centre stack while the Golf’s is independent. The air vents in the Jetta are rectangular. VW has also moved the wing mirror controls back to the door panel, which is less intuitive than in the Golf. Like the C-segment hatch benchmark, material build quality should be top notch.

North American Jettas will come with four engines, including a 2.0 TDI Clean Diesel with 320 Nm, good for 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 8.7 seconds. The others are a 2.0, 2.5 R5 (5-pot diesel) and the 2.0 TSI. All engines will come with a manual as standard, but a six-speed auto is an option. The 2.0 TDI and TSI can be had with a 6-speed DSG.

Would this have been the next-gen Waja if Proton-VW talks didn’t go down the drain? Gallery and a video after the jump.

Audi R8 e-tron electric sports car goes for a Le Mans spin

Not only did Audi win Le Mans in convincing fashion, the four rings showed off a prototype of the Audi R8 e-tron electric sports car at the race. Racing legend Frank Biela took the e-tron out for a spin in the Le Mans vers le futur demo event for EVs. The previous time Audi had an e-tron on show was at Detroit, with the tech wrapped in a TT-sized body.

The R8 e-tron is powered by four motors connected to a wheel each for quattro grip. Combined, they provide 313 hp and 4500 Nm of torque (no it’s no a typo), propelling the two-seater from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. 70% of power goes to the rear wheels while the rest goes to the fronts. The battery sits behind the passenger cabin for a 42:58 weight distribution.

Torque vectoring from the four motors mean that understeer and oversteer can be corrected by not only targeted activation of the brakes, but also by precise increases in power by few milliseconds. The R8 e-tron is claimed to remain extremely neutral even under great lateral acceleration, “hustling through corners as if on the proverbial rails” according to Audi.

The car’s lithium-ion battery can be charged from a household plug socket (230 volts/16 amperes), taking six to eight hours to be refilled. Kinetic energy from the brakes is recuperated, channelled to the alternator and converted into electrical energy. It all sounds good, but when is Ingolstadt finally putting an e-tron into production?

Spirra, Korea’s first supercar, does 0-100 in 3.5 seconds!

Starting out as the PS-II prototype in 2001, the Spirra was the brainchild of Kim Han-chul and his wife Choi Ji-sun, “automotive experts” who quit their jobs in Korean car companies to establish Proto Motors. After years of financial turmoil, the company was absorbed by the Qullim group and was renamed Qullim Motors, who now aims to be Korea’s first supercar manufacturer with the Spirra. Production started in March and deliveries will start soon.

The mid engined, rear driven Spirra will be hand made using a full carbon fibre body over a tubular space frame. This keeps weight to a minimum (kerb weight 1,320 kg) while maintaining a strong and stiff body structure. It was originally planned with a V8 but eco concerns changed that to a range of 2.7-litre V6 engines. It’s not mentioned where this unit is from, but the 2,656 cc gives its origins away as a Hyundai motor.

The starter V6 is naturally aspirated with 175 hp and 245 Nm of torque. Next up is the same engine with a “small turbo” with 330 hp and a “big turbo” unit with 400-420 horses. At the top of the range is the twin turbo with 450-500 hp and 539 Nm of twist. Paired to a six-speed manual, the top Spirra does the benchmark 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds, while top speed is 310 km/h! Quite phenomenal stats. Brembo is in charge of the stoppers – 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston fists at the back keeps the Korean supercar in control. The top model is also the only one to get an LSD.

The leather trimmed interior gets Recaro bucket seats, OMP 4-point harness and a Momo steering wheel. For the tame looks, this is the explanation. “The Spirra’s design is aggressive in stance and proportion, but less aggressive in the details. This look is intended to inspire excitement, but not completely shout that it is a supercar. An elegant and natural looking supercar design was what we were looking for,” says its maker

StopTech BMW M3 track car – stronger, nimbler and lighter

APP Europe had a few goals when they decided to modify the current BMW M3, which was to create a track day car with reduced weight, better driving dynamics, added engine performance and stable braking. The result is this, the StopTech M3.

Starting off, they played with the M3’s 4.0-litre V8 engine and increased power output to 450 hp from the standard 420 horses with the help of a tuning kit from Collaction AG. This also adds 40 Nm of torque to make 440 Nm. Next was the brake system by StopTech, which comprises forged aluminium and anodized 6-piston calipers with two-piece 380 x 32 mm discs at the front and 4-piston calipers on 355 x 32 mm discs at the back. This set is claimed to be much lighter and more powerful than the stock items.

To improve driving dynamics, APP added a KW Club Sport suspension, a titanium exhaust system and 19-inch ATS ‘Race Light’ wheels covered with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres. The exhaust system is 23 kg lighter than the standard set, while each new wheel is 1.5 kg lighter than the ones supplied by Munich. Instead of matte black, this car’s skin gets a matte titanium silver foil for a metallic effect and clean finish.

2011 Volkswagen CrossPolo – more details released!

Volkswagen has released more details on the new CrossPolo. As previously previewed, the CrossPolo is essentially a five-door Polo hatch with SUV looks and 15 mm higher ground clearance.

The petrol range of engines include a 69 hp 1.2-litre, 84 hp 1.4-litre and a 104 hp 1.2 TSI, while the diesel front comprises of a 1.6-litre trio of 74 hp, 89 hp and 104 hp TDI motors. 6-speed manuals are standard, while the higher powered units get 7-speed DSG as an option.

Prominent exterior changes include the anthracite coloured front apron with integrated front fog lights, black honeycomb insert with chrome trim and anodized roof rails, which have become a signature for the Cross range. Responsible for the SUV looks are the lower half of the body in black (including wheel arch extensions) and silver “stone guards” at both ends. It will ride on 17-inch alloys with 215/40 tyres. Silver too dull for you? Six body colours are available including CrossPolo exclusive Magma Orange and Terra Beige Metallic.

There’s a two-tone theme going on inside too. The fabric covering the seats and door trims can be had in Hot Orange, Orange, Latte Macchiato and Grey coupled with anthracite, which is the standard colour for the outer areas of the seats. Other neat features include height-adjustable sport seats, an asymmetrically split rear bench and backrest, pockets on the backs of the front seats with sliding drawers under them, leather-trimmed steering wheel, front centre armrest with storage compartment and aluminium look pedals.

Space wise, the CrossPolo’s 280-litre boot space can be expanded to 952 litres by folding the rear seats. Along with that, the incorporation of the dual cargo floor which can create a levelled loading surface and has straps that hold cargo in place, makes moving around with a full boot a breeze.

The new CrossPolo will be a welcome addition to the VW range in Malaysia. Prices for the previous generation fully imported CrossPolo (read our test drive review) started at around RM108,888. It would be interesting to see where VW plans to price this car should they bring it to Malaysia. Let’s be greedy and hope that they’ll also bring here the Polo GTI!

Have a closer look. Gallery after the jump.

Subaru Legacy 2.5GT tS by STI – everything but the engine

Subaru’s tuning arm STI has released a tuned version of the fifth generation Legacy in Japan. Called the Legacy 2.5GT tS (stands for tuned by STI) and available in both sedan and wagon bodystyles, it will be the performance flagship of the range with only a limited number produced. How many units is not mentioned.

On the outside, STI adds a front lip spoiler on both models. The sedan gets a boot lid spoiler whereas the estate gets a roof spoiler. All very discreet. The bonnet vent is already standard on turbo models. Perhaps the most desirable addition are those 18-inch multispoke STI alloys wrapped with 225/45 R18 tyres.

Inside, there’s a revised instrument panel, sports seats dressed in alcantara and leather with contrasting red seams, decorative carbon trim in a titanium finish, STI leather steering wheel and gearbox lever with red stitch along with STI-branded floor mats. Handling should be improved thanks to the Bilstein suspension along with strut tow bars. There’s also a new sports exhaust system.

However, the engine has remain unchanged from the 2.5GT, which means a flat-four with 261 bhp and 350 Nm of torque, good for 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. Top speed is 245 km/h.

GALLERY: Goodyear International Drift Series, Putrajaya

The hot sun and walking from one photography point to another (no cutting through the track, only way around is the perimeter) means that drift events are quite demanding on the reporter cum photographer, but the great sideways action on show and the pretty ladies always make up for it.

As promised, here’s a photo gallery of the Goodyear International Drift Series held at Precinct 3 behind the Palace of Justice Putrajaya over the weekend. In this first of three rounds for 2010, New Zealand’s Fanga Dan beat Malaysian Ivan Lim in the final showdown to claim top spot. Ser Ming Hui, more popularly known as Ah Fai, was third. 31 drifters took part, including the top guns of the local sideways community and talent from Singapore, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Fanga Dan wins Round 1 of the Goodyear International Drift Series 2010!

Daniel Woolhouse, better known as Fanga Dan, continued his good run in the ASEAN drift scene after winning Round 1 of the Goodyear International Drift Series (IDS) held in Putrajaya over the weekend. The Kiwi, fresh from third place in his maiden Formula Drift Asia competition in Singapore, defeated Ivan Lau of Team Bridgestone in the final. Completing the podium is Ser Ming Hui (a.k.a. Ah Fai) from Team Exotic Tuner.

The sun gave its best roasting effort at the newly resurfaced open ground behind the Palace of Justice in Precinct 3 (I’m having fever as a result!), and the action was good, but the turnout could have been better – perhaps it’s the distance of Putrajaya, or everyone still in bed after England vs USA! The lineup included the best Malaysian drifters, regular FD Asia drifters and local scene regulars wanting to have a go at the big boys.

UPDATE: Gallery added. Click here to view.
