Perodua in 2016 – 207,100 vehicles sold; highest ever market share with 35.7% of TIV; 6% growth in exports

In 2016, Perodua sold over 207,100 vehicles, which it estimates accounts for 35.7% of the 579,600 total industry volume (TIV) for the year, making it the highest market share ever obtained by the national carmaker.

“Despite 2016 being a challenging year, we are pleased to announce that all our models; from the Bezza to the Alza; are number one in their respective categories,” said Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, president and CEO of Perodua.

Aminar added that the Bezza, which was launched in July, managed to rake up over 36,000 unit in sales for 2016, making it the number one compact sedan in the A-segment. “We wish to thank the Malaysian public for their trust and endorsement our brand. We will continue to further improve ourselves for your motoring needs,” he said.

Moving forward, the carmaker is projecting a 2% growth in total industry volume for 2017, amounting to 590,000 units from its internal estimates of 579,600 units in 2016. “Based on this projection, we target to capture 34% of the market share or to sell 202,000 vehicles in 2017,” Aminar explained.

Perodua in 2016 – 207,100 vehicles sold; highest ever market share with 35.7% of TIV; 6% growth in exports

In terms of production, Perodua made 213,000 vehicles in 2016 compared with 229,000 units in 2015. The reduction in production is due a decreased demand for vehicles in 2016, brought upon by lacklustre economic conditions, stricter lending guidelines and stiff competition. This sentiment is set to continue, as Perodua foresees production to be reduced to 197,000 units, reflecting its sales target for 2017.

Despite tough economic conditions last year, Perodua managed to grow its export volume by 6% in 2016 to 4,700 units compared to 4,400 units in 2015. Of that total, over 60% of its exports were directed to Indonesia, the company stated.

The carmaker will also place more emphasis on aftersales for revenue growth, as it saw over two million vehicles visiting its service centres nationwide in 2016. The record number of service intakes saw a service revenue surge to RM682 million, an increase of RM82 million from 2015.

If I was Proton management, I will be so shy to see this. Proton is much older, started about 10 years earlier than Perodua, and yet, they struggle to sell hardly 70,000 cars.

So shameful. Perodua can sell 207,100 cars. Adn yet they don’t ask RM1.5 bil loan and suck money a total of RM15 billion since 90s.

How a young company can sell 3x the number of cars compared to Proton? And to make matters worse, Proton supplies cars to Gomen departments and agencies. Berpulul puluh ribu cars are ordered by Polis, PDRM, Kastam, Immigresen, TUDM, TLDM, Pos Malaysia etc etc.

I think if Perodua also supplied cars to gomen departments, sales would be 300,000!

      Congrats Perodua!!!!

      • Your point is?

I mean if they can sell 207,000 cars why would they ask for a loan?

  • All Malaysians must be proud of P2 for being self-sufficient and not asking government for bailout money (oh wait, they call it a soft-loan expecting it to be paid back, yeah right) for being a chronic failure like P1.

Still, P2 better damn equip all their new-launch cars with full safety of ABS, VSC and more than 2 airbags on the way to a 5-star safety rating. Anything less will not be tolerated in future.

Dont forget Proton is losing RM4 million per day also but the directors and management all get fat 6 figure salary per month with fat bonus and fat perks like driver, Audi limo, entertainment alowance etc.

Only country in the world, company is doing badly and bleeding money and yet, directors can enjoy fat bonus and fat pay packet.

wait a sec…P2 dun export cars to Indonesia, wait nvm, they do export the myvi here which is sold as the daihatsu sirion here in Indonesia, but still, that car doesn’t sell well here cause people prefer to buy the smaller ayla/agya (AKA Axia) and Avanza as well as its twin the Xenia

Congrats to Perodua although they were founded 10 years behind Proton. Expect Perodua to break record again this year. The only thing that is missing in a Perodua car is the ESC. To Proton, shame on you.

Why Perodua a success and Proton a failure despite the fact that Proton cars have superior safety technologies? Because these two brands only have market in Malaysia. And the only reason Malaysians buy a local brand car is because they can’t afford a foreign brand. Perodua is successful because it addresses everything that most Malaysian car buyers want. Cheap and reliable. If Malaysian car buyers want top end safety tech and luxury they will spend slightly more for a foreign brand cars such as Honda, Toyota, Mazda or even Ford. Proton’s mistake is they think they can compete with them just because they are slightly cheaper. Consumers not only look for value but also brand pride. Proton in this case offers so-so value with no brand reputation. Perodua however has incredible value and so-so brand reputation. At least Perodua got the value part right by being the cheapest yet extremely reliable.
Proton should trim down their model offerings by shutting down C segment and D segment models such as the Perdana, Preve, Suprima S. At those price range, one has to be incredibly stupid or patriotic to buy one. Focus on A segment and B Segment cars. Make them best in class or even as good as a car from a segment above. And keep the price competitive like Perodua.
Once Proton has gained confidence from consumers only then should they think about making higher end C and D segment cars.
Come on la… if I’ve worked hard for 15 years plus, will I blow my hard earned money on a Proton? At least I would want a Honda. Brand matters. And as of today, Proton is not worthy.

After all the bashing & screaming by commentators here, P2 is still the Top seller/King in M’sia.

Yes, some may claim P2 sell more bcos its cheap/cheaper. Others may say they are lousy & have no VSC except Bizza.

All in all, there Must be something P2 is doing is right. Am sure P1 can only dream to sell 200k units in a year.

Bravo to P2. Lets hope U further improve your services & your spec especially VSC which many are clamoring & make it a standard equipment in future.

yes possible also for protong to sell more than 200k cars. one of the reasons why protong sales is bad is because it can’t export its cars abroad all that much. the new engines are coming. i won’t surprised beginning from next year it can reach 200k mark and beyond

to be fair, i only expect the new saga to be a decent seller. the other new models can pergi mampos.
