BMW Malaysia has partnered with Shell Malaysia and ParkEasy for the Reserve + Shell Recharge bays, today unveiled at Sunway Pyramid. The reserved lots can be booked via the ParkEasy mobile app (available on iOS from the App Store and on Android from the Play Store), and the lots are located on level CP2 within the Preferred Parking section, accessible at an additional cost.
The Sunway Pyramid location currently comprises five charging bays, with a total of 10 across three Sunway Group locations; the other two locations are Sunway Pinnacle with three charging bays, and Sunway Velocity with two charging bays. These are equipped with the BMW i Wallbox charging setup that is identical to those installed in WEIL Hotel in Ipoh, says BMW Malaysia, namely the i Wallbox Plus with scalable outputs up to 32A three-phase at 22 kW. For the Reserve + Shell Recharge bays, they are configured for a 3.7 kW (single phase 16A) maximum output.
“We developed ParkEasy as means of increasing parking efficiency and reduce the time spent looking around for a parking spot. We took the chance to collaborate with Shell Malaysia, and subsequently partner with BMW Group Malaysia and Sunway Group, knowing full well that ParkEasy can successfully facilitate and enhance the charging behaviours of PHEV drivers in Malaysia with our parking reservation service,” said ParkEasy CEO Warren Chan.
Owners of BMW plug-in hybrids will be entitled to receive exclusive BMW privileges at the Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays starting July, says BMW. This includes an e-starter pack for new BMW PHEV owners, and an e-gift card for existing BMW PHEV owners for the use of these facilities at Sunway Group properties. In the meantime, any plug-in hybrid or full electric vehicle user can use the BMWMY promo code for the redemption of five ParkEasy credits for use at the Reserve + Shell Recharge bays from today until July 31, and is limited to the first 2,000 users.
The ParkEasy app has developed rather significantly from our previous coverage of its introduction in 2016, and has since moved on from the peer-to-peer format of users logging in as either a parker (in search of a lot) or a leaver (about to vacate a lot). Data collected in the subsequent months found that while most were using the app to find parking spaces, not enough were helping by using the leaving function, and so the company decided to move to a centralised reservation format, said ParkEasy chief technical officer Eric Tan.
The app itself continues to be free to download, and also charges users credits for the privilege of making reservations; credits can be reloaded within the app in denominations of 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 and 200 credits, and as before, each credit costs RM1, and can be paid for either via card or online banking.
At time of publication, the app lists IOI City Mall, Ativo Plaza, Quill City Mall, Shaftsbury Square, TNB Jalan Timur and Khind (Mistral) as its available locations, in addition to the aforementioned Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Pinnacle and Sunway Velocity. Among these, locations with charging stations installed are marked with a yellow and red symbol, like that depicted on the wall of the Sunway Pyramid location.
Users of conventional, internal-combustion engined vehicles can also use the app to reserve and use said parking lots, and while the frowning upon ICE vehicles parked in spaces with charging stations is increasingly public, it is up to the user to exercise due consideration, said Chan, lest they want to receive a flyer from the EV/PHEV community which essentially says, “If you are not charging, then you are blocking”.
ParkEasy is in talks with the shopping malls in which it is currently located for more spaces for reservation and charging, with the growth of lots both with and without charging stations to be developed in tandem, Tan said.
Usage in different locations will be charged different rates, and reservations for certain sections such as the LG level in IOI City Mall are available only on weekends.
