Porsche 911 R – ‘manual GT3 RS’ gets leaked early

2017 Porsche 911 R leak 1

Leaks appear to be a common theme for this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The next car to be revealed ahead of schedule (unintentionally) is the new Porsche 911 R. Thanks to Vierneznzestig and Porsche Blog, we now have several photos and preliminary details of the latest entry in the 911 range.

For those of you who were less than pleased with the new Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 RS, which was only available with a PDK dual-clutch transmission, the new 911 R is now your saving grace. Let’s start with its engine, which is lifted directly from the GT3 RS – a 4.0 litre naturally aspirated flat-six that develops 500 hp and 458 Nm of torque.

The engine, mated to six-speed manual (yay), doesn’t have to shift much heft either. Sources say the 911 R is a full 50 kg lighter than the already-lightweight GT3 RS (thanks to the manual ‘box). In terms of performance, the car is said to make the century sprint in 3.8 seconds, which is still 0.5 seconds slower than a standard GT3 RS. It will top out at 323 km/h.

All that performance is wrapped in a body that is certainly more reserved than a GT3 RS. Therefore, all the aggressive intakes, slats, outlets and design contributions by an axe-wielding maniac are no longer present. Even the large fixed rear wing has been omitted here.

The main exterior changes here include a new bumper, dual body stripes, and GT3-esque wheels. Inside, the spotlight here is on the car’s six-speed manual shifter. Other changes, according to the leaked photos, are bucket seats that are upholstered in a chequered black and white pattern.

Sources say the car will be priced at 190,000 euros in Europe (RM871,669), a sizeable premium over the standard GT3 RS’ 162,162 euros (RM744,450), and it will be a limited-run model, where just 991 units will be produced. What do you think of the Porsche 911 R?

  • ‘Therefore, all the aggressive intakes, slats, outlets and design contributions by an axe-wielding maniac are no longer present. Even the large fixed rear wing has been omitted here.’

The GT3-RS is a racing car with a number plate, therefore the ‘design contributions’ have a technical background.

Sources say this version will sell almost 30,000 euros more than the GT3 RS. Manual gearboxes are always cheaper than PDKs or any automatics, but in this case Porsche can put any price they want and it will still be sold out in weeks!
