SPYSHOTS: Audi TT RS Roadster on the Nurburgring

Audi TT RS Roadster Spy-03

The test season at the Nurburgring has started, and one of the earliest cars to pound the track is this one, the upcoming Audi TT RS Roadster. So, like the previous Mk2, the latest TT will also have RS variants in both coupe and Roadster bodystyles.

It’s not yet launched, the tin-top Audi TT RS, but a red coupe was snapped filling up at a Spanish petrol station last week. Compared to the TTS, currently most powerful Mk3 TT, the TT RS wears a more aggressive front bumper with bigger side air intakes. The chin is more pronounced and is painted in contrasting silver, with a ‘quattro’ decal on the bottom of the grille.

Speaking of that, the singleframe has black honeycomb inserts as opposed to the TTS’ egg crate-style item. The Spanish sighting also gave us a clear view of the RS’ coupe’s turbine-style wheels. The grey Roadster mule here wears spidery multi-spoke shoes, although these may not be the launch rims. Two big oval tail pipes further betray this rag top’s true identity.

The current TTS has 310 hp/380 Nm, so the RS will have to comfortably beat those figures. Word is that the hottest TT might be powered by the 2.5 litre five-cylinder turbo from the RS3 Sportback (367 PS/465 Nm), a big-hitting 2.0 turbo previewed by the VW Golf R 400 concept (400 PS/450 Nm), or even a heavily tuned version of the TT’s 2.0 TFSI engine. Transmission options should include a manual gearbox (based on earlier spyshots) or S tronic dual-clutch unit, all with quattro AWD.
