Germans riled up over potential Autobahn speed limit

A leaked proposal to impose universal speed limits on the German Autobahn is causing outrage among car-loving Germans, according to a report by Associate Press. Germany is one of the few countries in the world that doesn’t impose speed limits on the Autobahn.

Germany’s transport minister, Andreas Scheuer said the idea “goes against all common sense,” but prominent Green Party lawmaker Cem Ozdemir said the move to impose speed limit is an “act of reason.”

The idea, which is essentially still a notion, would limit speeds on the country’s highways to 80 mph, or 129 km/h. Those in support said the move would reduce air pollution, help fight climate change and reduce the number of car accidents.

This isn’t the first time environmentalists had called for speed limits to be imposed on the Autobahn, though. Over the years, particularly since 2007, eco activists have fought for its implementation, stating that speed limits will cut greenhouse gas emissions and help Germany brush up its green credentials. Thoughts, guys?

  • Autobahn has existing speed limits, not entirely but at a substantiate lengths of its highway network.

If this article is saying the Germans want to impose speed restriction for Autobahn’s entire newtwork, i would second. the reason being a public road should not be a place to race or test one’s/vehicle’s ability, it shall be safe for all to use and the speed limit shall be moderate enough for all to feel safe and comfortable to be at. No doubts that some stretch at autobahn is built to insane ‘design speed’, however not all its users actually want or could drive at those speed. Wanna race, go the race circuits. Avoidable accidents can be significantly reduced by this.

Regarding emission control, ya it makes sense that cruising at lower speed numbers (modern cars has good speed number to the eco)contributes to slower greenhouse gasses buildups.

Race track no fun ma. Its so safe and every one so fast and competitive. Must spend more to set up the car, upgrade stage 1-2-3, and also personal safety gears cost a bom. Highway la best to drive fast, feel fast at least when every1 else is slow. Cilok here there, tail gate here there to show off my car’s power and my driving skills… Wroommmmm…

  • No speed limit on Jan 23, 2019 at 5:27 pm

I’ve driven and was also in an BMW M3 being driven on the Autobahn before. I must say that speeds up to 240kph can be reached comfortably and most importantly, safely. At no time, I felt any danger whatsoever and the trip of over 100km was done in 20 mins. German drivers are very safe and disciplined. No tailgating and no overtaking from the blind side unlike a certain Penang Vios driver. Drivers always keep a safe distance and fast lane is only used for overtaking or going above than the average traffic speed. We have speed limits here in our country but driver attitude is terrible resulting in more accidents

The idea of a speed limit to help reduce air polution… hence combat climate change (which is ridiculous anyway)… is based on the supposition that cars still run on fossil fuels.

In the not so distant future all vehicles will run on electric thus making this idea moot. Germany itself has agreed to ban all internal combustion engines by 2050… while a few EU nations will start the ban on petrol and diesel much earlier in 2025/30.

At the same time M’sia has yet to announce a deadline on a ban on petrol and diesel vehicles.

Of course the Europeans wants to ban the use of combustion engine, but there’s a whole lot of agenda behind it.. And of course we are numb about ‘green’ vehicles, let alone green energy source.. Common, our economy is highly dependent on oils & minerals. if we gonna go green, what else can we produce to sustain? The Europeans on the other hand has minimal natural resources, even if they have their ppl will challenge their gov to preserve/conserve it.. Also they have tons of technological developments.. This is the time to show the world that they r not dependent on others but others r dependent on them.. We on the other hand, spend all our resources for development, after decades still not develop but pretend to be.. import all the technological stuffs with $$ we earned, yet not the brainchild behind it.. very few of us actually do have good brains, but mostly lost to brain drain and the remaining few somewhere either in the universities waiting for gov bonds to fund its research and few more gave-up and working for slightly higher $ with the private sector (again owned by foreigners)..

We want easy money, comfortable life.. But is it sustainable?? The EU has banned the palm oil, next wil be our petrol.. Rubber was long ago.. Wake-up Malaysia..

    • Won’t driving faster resulted to battery draining quickly thereby resulting to charge more often and longer. As most electricity/battery is powered by non-renewable source it is still an environmental concern.

  • Again another proposal that looks nice on paper. I’ve driven on the Autobahn, and it’s not like everyone hits full throttle the moment they arrive at the de-restricted zones. Even with speed limits, people will still break them even if you set it at 200kph. If anything, implementing speed limits when there’s non before only increases travel time and reduces overall productivity of Germany. If the Green Party wants change, at least provide legitimate studies and research to prove that the speed limit will indeed have a significant positive impact on the environment.

The eco-nutcases and liberal left are screwing up the world with their lame ideas. From plastic straw bans to Autobahn speed limits. What next, call for the banning of flushing toilets to save fresh water?

Speed limit will not prevent accidents as proven on the Penang bridge incident and other slow zone accidents. Attitude and discipline does.
I have been on the Autobahn. Drivers are disciplined and they keep a safe distance even at 200 km/h plus. At this speed, the car behind will need to leave a space of at least a half to one kilometer from the car in front for emergency braking. Definitely no tailgating and overtaking on the ‘wrong side’.
Slower speeds presumably will help lower air pollution.
