DSK Murni – new EV with 350 km range, 40 minute charge time; Malaysia’s third national car maker?

There’s a new car company called DSK Industry, claiming to be the first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in Malaysia. It even goes as far as to call itself the “third Malaysian National car manufacturer,” and there’s already a car shown on its website called the Murni (pictured above).

A quick look on the internet revealed that the Murni isn’t exactly Malaysian, being identical to China’s SiTech DEV1, a new sub-brand under FAW. Murni’s specifications seem competent – it has a driving range of 350 km, and a 40-minute charge (via the 6.6 kW AC charger, apparently) juices up the spent battery to 80%. Otherwise, it takes 5.5 hours for a full charge via a regular domestic socket. Battery capacity is said to be at 100,000 mAh.

Performance-wise, the 1,120 kg Murni accelerates from zero to 50 km/h in 4.8 seconds. This is thanks to a 55 kW high-performance permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces a peak torque of 170 Nm. A driving range of 100 km consumes about 13.1 kWh of charge.

The electrical circuit is claimed to be IP67-sealed, and the onboard Battery Management System helps prevent battery overcharging or over-discharge. There’s also an intelligent thermal management system to regulate the battery’s operating temperature, and it functions by heating it up (during cold starts) or cooling it down on a hot day.

Next, design. It’s claimed to be simplistic in style, inspired purely by Nordic industrial design. This manifests itself in a number of things, starting with the closed air intake grille (this hides the charging port) and elongated C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The car rides on a set of dual-tone alloys, and the rear gets a pair of slim LED tail lights.

The photos on DSK Industry’s website all show the car in its native left-hand drive configuration. That aside, the cabin looks fairly decent, featuring a 10-inch freestanding touchscreen head unit and a smaller eight-inch digital instrument panel. Below that is a row of physical toggles (kind of like a BMW), and further down are the air vents.

DSK Murni – new EV with 350 km range, 40 minute charge time; Malaysia’s third national car maker?

Between the front seats rests a simple drive selector knob, behind which is the good old lever for the parking brake. There appears to be some usable space to store items right below and in front of the centre tunnel as well.

Interestingly, the Murni is said to be fitted with the D·OS smart car system, one that DSK Industry claims to have developed independently. This provides an integrated travel experience from the cloud through “physical connections, data flow and calculation.” We have no clue what that means, but the DEV1 also features the same D·OS system, so it’s unclear how much Murni’s system differs, if at all.

Other key features include a facial recognition system to unlock and start the car, an app to remotely monitor your car’s status, as well as a dedicated user ID (D-User) to enable various in-car connected systems that include web browsing and music/movie streaming. In China, the car even has a built-in cashless payment system that it calls “brushing payment.”

So, if this were to make it to Malaysia, would you be interested in getting the DSK Murni? In China, the DEV1 carries an asking price of 100,000 yuan, which is roughly around RM60,000. For now, DSK Industry’s website reveal that it’s looking for Malaysian dealers, but funnily enough the contact number listed is a Singaporean landline, and the Facebook page is called Autod Singapore.

The whole world is moving towards EV. Infact, by 2035, the whole of Europe will be fully EV with no petrol or diesel cars sold.

That is just 16 years time.

DSK Murni is just keeping up to times as they know Proton is still sleeping. Until today, got no EV. That is not bad. They don’t even have Hybrid which is a 14 year old technology.

This is why DSK Murni will definitely overtake Proton.

All three car companies in Malaysia are rebadgers. I wonder what we learnt from Mitsubishi for 25 years.

They tried to transfer technology but Proton workers could not understand.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 5 Thumb down 8
      • Oh yeah. Mitsubishi were trying to transfer the whip and chain locks technology plus the slave labouring knowhow but you see, Proton workers are too ethical and respectful of fellow human beings to comprehend what these Japs were trying to teach. Once Proton management board found out, they kicked them Japs all the way back to Nippon and disallowed them to come back for 10 years. Eventually they returned back via Tan Chong Motors, another bloodsucker of their employees. I’m glad Proton didn’t follow their culture of slavery.

Our salesman all talk sweet. Especially BMW and Mercedes salesman. But they never tell you that their batteries all cost RM130k and above. That is just battery. The service labour and also the electrical parts is another big bomb. Each time… .nothing less than 10k.

    The industrial flow process in a nutshell ;

    Europe creates it.

    America markets it.
    China copies it.

    and … Malaysia rebadges it.

On a more serious and pragmatic note, this concept can actually be realised for the most part.

To start, it’s a people’s electric car, like the Nissan LEAF (as opposed to the expensive Teslas). It also looks alright (and not awkward like the i-Miev and Zoe). And FAW is one of the bigger Chinese car companies, they have contracts with Volkswagen. 350 km range is very much acceptable, and charging time is reasonable too.

So if the third national car is going to be electric, it should be something realistic like this DSK above. However, the common perception is that Dr. M is pro-Japan, and he probably wouldn’t want a China company as a technical partner.

If we wanted a Chinese-affiliated local automotive company, we would have just stick with Geely Proton. Why need to reinvent the wheel with our Rm20million? Furthermore this is just a proof-of-concept idea, none of the cars are on the road. Are we going to be the guinea pig for the Chinese?

In that case, better aim higher and go for flying cars. No need to reinvent the wheel, we will make the wheel obsolete!

By the way, for an electric car, it is weird that the Murni comes with a manual handbrake. That’s some retro tech right there.

Any of rakyat sake, we will support. but make sure it worth for rakyat to buy it. Make it an affordable price. Talking about EV, we also talk about the battery. How was the R&D for batery goes? How long it last? Is it local R&D or we just sub the R&D to others? Don’t just make money but we want the local intelligent to involved together in this project. if we lack all of this, make sure this China company give benefit to rakyat, in the end of the project must have the technology transfer to us.

  • This is China eletric car. As usual Malaysia just rebadge it. Latest China electric car and SUV have good design with premium feel and good EV range. X70 is actually going to be replaced very soon in China. You can see all the 2019 and upcoming new models and their price in RMB by searching in Baidu. China is progressing very fast in the past 10 years in automotive industries. Most of their car manufacturers can actually make enough profit by only doing domestic market, but some of them are very ambitious. Im pretty sure that one of the China car maker will make it to #1 in sales volume within the next 10 years. Just like 10 years ago who would have thought Haier will acieve #1 global sales in elect appliances and Huawei #1 global sales in smatphone. China progress from cheap labour economy to inovation & technology economy is really out of anyone imagination, that’s why in the past few years the US is trying to suppress China by any means, starting frim TPP during Obama time until the recent trade war and boycott of Huawei by the US goverment.
