The Perodua Axia, which has been around in current facelifted form since early 2017, has been given another update, and the 2019 Perodua Axia is now open for booking. There’s plenty to talk about – from new segment-first equipment, to new variants and an SUV-inspired offshoot, plus revised pricing, so let’s start.
The Viva-replacing Axia has been with us since September 2014, and it received a midlife facelift in January 2017. For all its life, the Axia has had two unique faces – a normal one and a sportier one for the SE and Advance. This split is no more – now, all Axia variants share the same face, with trim differences.
The outgoing Axia range had four trim levels (E, G, SE, Advance) and two of those (G and SE) had manual or auto options (base E was MT only, top Advance was AT only). In the 2019 Axia range, Perodua has added two new variants, and deleted the manual option for the SE, which means that other than the “driving school spec” E, all Axias come with a four-speed automatic. The new range reads E, G, GXtra (new), Style (new) SE and Advance.
There’s demand for a manual E, which is still the cheapest new car on sale in Malaysia, but little appetite for a stick shift higher up the the range, Perodua says. Like before, the 5MT and 4AT are paired with a 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine. The 1KR-VE VVT-i engine makes 67 hp and 91 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. Claimed FC is unchanged – 22.5 km/l for the MT and 21.6 km/l for the AT. But why is the new Style variant rated lower at 20.8 km/l? More on that later.
We move on to equipment. Like before, all variants above the E come with ABS and EBD, but Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) makes its debut in the 2019 Axia. The active safety system, and P2’s anti-theft bag hook are available from the GXtra up. That’s very welcome, but the big news here is the introduction of the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) 2.0 safety pack on the range topping Axia Advance.
First seen on the Myvi and then the Aruz (in 2.0 form), P2’s ASA safety suite includes Pre-Collision Warning (PCW), Pre-Collision Braking (PCB), Front Departure Alert (FDA) and Pedal Misoperation Control (PMC), all working with the assistance of a stereo camera located at the top of the windscreen.
First seen on the Aruz SUV, ASA 2.0 adds on pedestrian detection to the the original ASA (Myvi) set, along with improvements in working range and parameters. The operational speed of PCW is now from from four km/h to 100 km/h (was four km/h to 30 km/h), and it detects pedestrians as well (from four km/h to 50 km/h, ASA was only for vehicles).
Should the driver not respond to the PCW’s audio visual warning by braking or steering away, PCB takes over by automatically braking the car. Known in general as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), the system provides two-stage braking intervention, first applying weak primary braking and then hard braking as a collision is imminent.
The PCB operates from four km/h to 80 km/h for vehicles and from four km/h to 50 km/h for pedestrians. Perodua says that at speeds of up to 30 km/h (10 km/h higher than the Myvi), PCB will help prevent a crash. At medium speeds (30 to 80 km/h for vehicles, 30 to 50 km/h for pedestrians), the system would have trimmed enough speed to help lessen the impact.
Elsewhere, FDA and PMC are as per the Myvi – FDA informs you when the car in front has departed in a traffic jam or queue by buzzing an alert, while PMC provides an override of engine output in cases where the system detects an object in front of the vehicle, within a four metre distance. It helps prevent the accidental stepping of the wrong pedal (gas instead of brakes) in parking situations.
The model’s airbag count remains at two, and the Axia’s four-star ASEAN NCAP rating is maintained, but the addition of VSC and ASA 2.0 is a big deal in this segment.
Away from safety kit, the G spec gets two speakers, electric side mirrors, and 14-inch alloys. For many, the GXtra is where it really starts – besides the above-mentioned VSC and anti-snatch bag hook, it adds on rear parking sensors, driver’s seat height adjustment, and two rear speakers (for four in total).
As mentioned, going for the SE will no longer get you a unique face, but it’s still the “sporty” variant in the range thanks to chrome trim on the front grille, plus skirting on the front bumper and sides with red accents. Other SE-onwards equipment include safety and solar window tint, front parking sensors, electric folding door mirrors, and keyless entry with push-button start. Like before, the top Advance is based on the SE, but it adds on ASA 2.0 and a touchscreen head unit with reverse camera.
Lastly, the bigger surprise than VSC/ASA. It’s not often that one catches Perodua experimenting, but here’s an all-new variant that hasn’t been done before on any of its model lines. The Axia Style gets SUV-inspired looks, which brings to mind the Volkswagen CrossPolo, Hyundai i20 Active and Honda WR-V. All three examples are basically regular B-segment hatchbacks dressed up as SUVs, and they have no more off-road ability than the stock Polo, i20 and Jazz. The Axia Style is like that.
We’ve seen the Axia Style at a private preview earlier this month, but because no photography was allowed, I’ll try my best to describe the new variant. Like those global B-segment examples, the Style wears SUV-style black plastic cladding around the lower body, with silver painted sections at the lower front and rear bumpers that mimic skid plates. Adding to the desired effect are black roof rails, although they’re merely decorative.
The Style’s front end is slightly different from the rest of the range, thanks to black carbon-textured stickers around the “mouth”, giving it a face that reminds us of the blue-coloured previous-gen Myvi SE. There’s also a unique dotted grille insert and an exclusive Style colour – orange.
The Style also stands taller than other Axias, by 15 mm to be exact. This added height is not because of raised suspension, but only from the 15-inch alloys (an inch up) and thicker tyres combo, plus the roof rails. The result of this is slightly compromised fuel economy: 20.8 km/l vs the standard car’s 21.6 km/l.
Inside, the Axia Style is unchanged save for unique “denim” fabric for the seats, which have a “fish scale” pattern and contrast stitching. The Style is actually not the range topper, and aside from its unique “SUV bits,” equipment count is largely similar to the GXtra, with the addition of keyless entry and push start. Perodua is expecting 20% to 25% of total Axia sales – which are skewed towards women (in contrast, most Bezza buyers are men) – to come from the Style.
Lastly, pricing – the company has revealed the estimated on-the-road prices (without insurance) for the 2019 Perodua Axia ahead of its arrival in showrooms – and they’re a couple of thousand ringgit higher than before. Here are the estimated prices of the six variants in the Axia range:
- Axia Standard E – RM24,090
- Axia Standard G – RM33,490
- Axia GXtra – RM34,990
- Axia Style – RM38,890
- Axia SE – RM38,890
- Axia AV – RM43,190
By the way, the 2019 Proton Saga is priced from RM32,800 to RM39,800, so the Axia range starts lower but tops out higher than its booted rival. Model-for-model, discounting the base and range-topping Axia models (the Saga isn’t offered in a bargain basement variant, nor does it come with autonomous emergency braking) and the Saga Standard MT (the Axia is auto-only from Standard G and up), the Perodua is slightly cheaper.

Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Here comes the bashers…
Perodua is truly a smart company. They know that SUV is a big trend right now so they create a SUV variant for their best selling game changer. Without any doubt, this game changing Axia will continue to be Malaysian best selling car, gaming Saga FL over
Proton must send Rombongan Sambil Belajar to Perodua office to learn how to create game changers. There are reasons why Perodua sales are always 4X more than Proton.
There a several reasons why you should go for Axia. Game changing Axia have good-looking design, excellent FC, top build quality, proven engine, complete safety with VSC, high RV and affordable price. No wonder why Axia becomes Malaysian best selling game changer.
Alot my friends who work as teacher, nurse and acct, they having hard time to sell off their saga and iriz now, very low price people wanna buy. It cause them to wait longer to buy myvi, axia and bezza. They have to let go their proton car 1st but very difficult to sell. Some that cant wait to change car have to top up money in order to let go because settlement not balance with current value, even she put 15% d/p before on her saga. Even 2nd hand car dealer told them proton value is very poor.
A P2 troll hotselling a P2 car. Wonder how many will believe his words?
Spot on comment bro! Sales data do not lie and it have proven that game changing Axia sales is truly amazing compared to Saga
It’s safer then the Saga, because it has 30hp less. “Anti-Acceleration” safety feature build-in.
Rombongan ke jepun sambil tgk cerita porno…untuk pembeli perodua
Giving it an SUV look does not make it an SUV variant.
If it has the design and looks of an SUV , what else to call it ?
Crossover
Accessories or what P2 calls it “gear-up”
Not even close to a proper crossover
For same $$$. rather buy 2019 Proton Saga FL.
Tats y p1 lower saga price same as axia becos nobody afford to buy junk rv saga. Better buy axia. Even saga price same like axia, still more people buy axia. Plus more people buy axia advance tat cost rm40k+ than buying junk saga rm30k+. Rakyat know which the best now.
I don’t think P2 is smart to employ you. You are a deadweight to P2, dragging the whole brand down. If you shut up, people might have better opinion of P2.
People will not go to Perodua anymore because of bad services, lacking of safety and outdated things. Now, many people will buy Proton because got safety features, amazing things inside Proton and service is better as you can see there are lots of people went to Proton showroom while Perodua showroom is very empty and got lot of flies and mosquitoes everywhere in Perodua showroom. Very sad Perodua SA
Perodua game changing sales are always no.1 every month so how come Perodua showrooms are empty? use your common sense Halloha560…
My name is not Halloha560 so don’t simply said.
This Mario guy keep coming back with crap!
He already got punished so I hope he can behave and no more game over instigations
Habis la game over plotong!
Yap u truly right. This axia wif VSC & ASA is truly game changer now. Totally habis larrrrr protong.
Banyak sonang ooo…lu sayang anak bini beli s*ga, lu sayang duit beli ax*a. Manyak simple lor.
People prefer Perodua anytime because it holds its value
Buy 2019 Axia RM24k. Use 2 years also can sell for RM17k.
Buy 2019 Proton Saga for RM34k. Use 2 years can only sell RM12k.
Tell me where can I buy a 2 year old Saga for RM12k. I pay cash NOW.
Don’t talk cock.
I wonder why people still buy a Pug, Kia, BMW then……a Pug depreciation is worst than Proton.
If u cant afford better car then work harder.
Not saying Axia is terrible but u get what u pay for and its for people with ‘certain’ income bracket or for short distance 2nd car.
Interesting. And how do you know that for certain, are you from 2021? You don’t look like a fellow time traveller to me, you look like a bullshitter instead.
Bro . Have u ever been to a perodua showroom before on the weekends ? I can barely Service my car on the weekends . So before u talk think thrice yeah ! And if u ask me i’d rather buy Axia instead of Saga . Saga fuel consumption is so high and the safaty on that car might put you to death. So yeah
Tengkorak hang…
The smart becouse customer dumb
Perodua only lives of two models Axia and Myvi. If they can give ASA and VSC to Axia, then why not Bezza? Double standard from this con-pany. They cannot be trusted to take care of owners safety.
Axia sales boom like hot cake causes ur mental disturbance.
Bezza ado la VSC,cuma tkda ASA shj lagi..sama la mcm P1 model…
Already Myvi sales are 4X that of Proton’s entire range. Now with this Axia beefed up, sales will be maybe 10X that of Proton.
Last time Proton fanboys action say Axia got no VSC. Despite no VSC also, Axia sales was over 80k units last year.
Now with VSC, just Axia alone will be sales over 100k units.
Myvi 4x sales of P1 is pure BS. The P2 troll 4x more ridiculous with the dupes is fact.
Ya la last time perodua ceo said that they cannot put vsc…how come now can….so sohai u…just keep lying people abaut safety….build car people first konon….puikkkk….
Agree with you. Perodua also outsells Ferrari so Ferrari must be a failure.
Tok kok again
Proton entire range 8000 units monthly, you meant only Myvi get 32000 units per month and Axia 80000 units per month? Sure or not?
Copy paste: “Here’s the CEO comment which I wonder is not supporting a government safety regulation? https://paultan.org/2016/12/05/perodua-unable-to-install-esc-on-current-models-except-the-bezza-new-model-due-out-in-2018/”
To get all those nice addons, you would have to pay nearly double of the base spec car. Not a good strategy. For that price, better to get Picanto or wait for X50 coming later this year.
Thanks for the info Danny. Clear reporting and non-biased opinions, you really stand out in this site. Wish you can write more often.
What kind of Bollock would even downvoted such neutral yet respecting statement of yours? Here’s an upvote for you and Danny.
Axia beli je. tak payah pening, tak payah pikir…
Tak dapat pun 21km/l, why oh why
Beli axia bukan nak dapat 21KM/L, tapi sebab roadtax murah, kereta simple, terbukti lebih jimat dari enjin CAmpro 1.3, as a 2nd car after buying MPV Alza.. Hidup PERODUA! The real Malaysian car!
Tukar badge saja. Apa nak bangga sangat? Bukan kereta Mesia pun, saja bawak dari Indon
Wow! Hidup Perodua the real Malaysian car, semangat berkobar-kobar. But profits mostly go back to Japan…
Memang org yg tak pikir je beli Axia…
This is the real game changer.. Proton can not breath anymore.. Saga baru nak up sudah kena tendang Axia..
You said the same about the Aruz, but the more expensive X70 still selling well. Now you said this about Axia, but the Saga is collecting more bookings every day.
Ha ha! For the both price that not far different, i prefer new saga. Have all that axia premium have. And saga bigger. Suitable for family car. No for non bontot car. Boring giler
It is not bad that add more safety features which this is important nowadays.
With the price, it is more worhty than myvi
See the first car in its entirely first, then decide to book….
Seeing the outline cannot judge…..Must see the entire package.
Marketing hype, I guess
Stand taller by 15cm…? Nak mati kah…?
Read la dei. The height increase is because of roof rails & bigger rims
Should be 1.5 cm i guess
The standard Axia already not very stable with the narrow track. Increasing ride height will only make the stability worse. Hope we won’t see many ‘Axia turtle’ like Myvi turtle.
My mother’s 2015 Axia … I hate it. Flimsy interior trim pieces and bits, power windows with odd noises, uncomfortable, and many more and other complaints. What’s good is only the fact that it’s fuel economical and reliable.
My nephew Iriz way worse, baru 1week back door power window kaput, FC mcm paip bocor..
My 1 day old Aruz caught fire and killed my family. How is your problem worse than mine?
Why don’t you say drive out the showroom straight away exploded? More dramatic that way, since you like to overdramatise.
“and two of those (G and SE) had manual or auto options (base E was MT only, top Advance was AT only). In the 2019 Axia range, Perodua has added two new variants, and deleted the manual option for the SE, which means that other than the “driving school spec” E, all Axias come with a four-speed automatic. ”
This paragraph is difficult to understand.
I would have instead:
and two of those (G and SE) had manual or auto options. The base E was MT only, top Advance was AT only. In the 2019 Axia range, Perodua has added two new variants, and deleted the manual option for the G and SE, which means that other than the “driving school spec” E, all Axias come with a four-speed automatic.
In 2014 the price difference between Standard E and Standard G variants was reasonable. About 6 or 7k. But with 2017 the price difference became something like 8k or 9k. I was hoping by introducing the GXtra variant, it would allow the Standard G to be more affordable. I guess not. Perhaps they should keep rear wiper but remove rear demister.
4 star ASEAN ncap rating despite ESC means the vehicle structure is not very good.
Rating is given based on lowest specification variant which is the E. Kosong also can get 4 star. You can only imagine how cincai the rating are under ASEAN NCAP. Euro NCAP won’t even give you any extra points for having ESC as it is mandatory.
if applicable, “Rating is given based on lowest specification variant” is a false statement.
Bezza with ESC, 5 stars and without ESC, 4 stars.
Having two speakers I’ve always felt was like a Proton Standard thing. I guess Perodua now wants a bit of cost cutting inspired by Proton action if you know what I’m getting at.
later on, I am sure accesories shop/tyre shops will lower back 15cm on the Axia.
All in the name of business…….
Like usual, perodua always intro their product with many variant for the customer to choose. it’s ok but people always think axia’s as the fuel efficiency car nowadays. So, depend on the reason to buy the new car. if customer choose the fuel efficiency, then axia should be okay. but if they want safety and bigger size for family car or long way travel, then saga is ok. all people have their own choice, no need to argue about who is better which is proton or perodua.
Still, i waiting for bezza facelift with better weight kerb and back seat. not goyang2 when run by the lorry at highway.
Dude.. Bezza is very light weight.. More on fuel efficiency… If you want stable on the road.. Anytime Proton.. Or Toyota..
btol jugak tu.. kalau saga dah kuar yg facelift.. mungkin bezza pun akan facelift.. tayar besar, ASA mungkin??
SUV style = new smoked headlight
Perodua kencing sebelum ni cakap tak boleh pasang vsc…kenapa ni boleh pulak…bull shit u perodua…
Upgrade from 14 inch to 15 inch tire make the car higher by 15 CM? Really? 1 inch is 25 MM.. how can the car up 15 CM?? typo perhaps?
Betul la tu. Memang la total wheel diameter increase 25.4 mm, tapi ride height naik 12.7mm saja (kalau tire dimensions maintain sama).
ride & handing still like sampan.. hahaha
How to differentiate a full spec Axia from anything below full spec?
The full spec car cannot tailgate your car at speed below 80kmh.
I wonder what will happen if a car equipped with AEB was tailgating the car in front at speed beyond AEB working limit and the front car gradually reduces limit until its speed is within AEB working limit….The tailgating car will apply emergency braking right?
What Perodua try to do here is retain their no 1, they won’t give in without a fight. Proton definitely will secure the no 2 spot with several revamp n x70. Next year no 1 spot will be bloody…with Proton bring in x50 n CKD x70. Definitely other brand like Honda, Toyota n Nissan, VW, Peugeot etc will feel the heat. They are more threathen by Proton then Perodua due 80k to 110k range middle class buying power
Is this an all.new model or a facelift?
I test drove the Axia once. It made me laugh so much while driving it. Super bad NVH, totally no power going uphill, and the 3-cylinder engine vibrates like hell while waiting at the traffic lights.
You DON’T buy the Axia if you love driving.
Agreed, drove Axia once. Feels no safety at all. Ride & handling off the course…feels like suicide moving coffins. I’m driving Ford Focus and even my Peugeot 206 feels safe.
“There’s demand for a manual E..”
For driving schools, that’s it.
ahahaha…RM24,090 to RM33,490 just to Add on: Four-speed automatic transmission, 14-inch alloy wheels,Two speakers, ABS with EBD? … this is what you get after all the worship and praises you give? this is how they repay you? all those “game over la proton” , “P2 is game changing” tagline you spit out, now you all get “game over” by P2. *clap* *clap*
In 2015 it was even worse. There was the manual G spec selling at 30k. 6k more tha E spec just for radio, 2 speaker and alarm. All p2 salesman said manual E no stock an ask to wait 6 months forcing ppl to buy the overpriced manual G which didn’t even have ABS. Real bloodsucker this Perutdua.
We must thanks proton for perodua’s upgrade. If proton doesnt make those good changes, perodua will not bother to upgrade their cars. Before this they said axia cannot put vsc, but after new saga is out with positive feedbacks, suddenly they can put everything on axia.
2019 and our B40 are still stuck with choices like these…ish…
let the sales speak for itself… obviously Proton has positioned itself to a much better spot recently…. but perodua has consistently maintained its sales every time a new model/facelift/variant being introduced.
The 1KR-VE is DOHC and not SOHC
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_KR_engine#1KR-DE2
Just to confirm the engine is SOHC or DOHC?!? Usually VVT-i engine is DOHC type. Please re-confirm!
Where did you get these pictures though don’t have full meh ?
Perodua Axia no need to tease or cover up ….just launch after all just a refreshed basic car …. no emotions … car from point A to B
Feeling the heat from Geely Proton revival …. Japanese Perodua
Sorry to say, at those prices l would rather get a new Proton Saga. More solid and more space.
if Ford or even Honda can come out with a small capacity turbocharged engine, why Perodua cannot? technology not high end enough?
Ikot suker la nk beli..beli..tak nak beli..sudah laa..
Let’s see what happens.
As a workshop owner, I have seen my share of problems with the new generation of Protons. The old ones, based on Mitsubushi, was ok. Reliable engines & drivetrains. Body is typical Malaysian quality.
The new generation CAMPRO engines are rubbish, underpowered & unreliable. Leaks are common. If it doesn’t leak, it’s not a Proton. In some Proton Saga BLM models, if you don’t start the engine for 3 or 4 days, it won’t start afterwards. You have to crank the hell out of the engine before it starts.
Perodua engines are reliable, but the body is nothing to shout about. Fit & finish are 2×5 with the Protons. Fuel efficiency are better for Perodua for comparable engine sizes.
For those who still say Proton is better, answer this question…. What is the power output of a Proton Campro 1.6 liter engine? FYI, Toyota 4AGE, which is a 25 year old (or more) engine puts out around 123HP. This is your reference. If Campro cannot do (much) better, you have answered yourself.
hahahaha kelakar tengok sales man proton and perodua gaduh. *makan pop corn*
