Proton Exora owners are advised not to purchase and install custom oil cooler hose (OCH) kits for their vehicles, as there’s a worry that it may cause damage to the engine, FMT reports. According to Faisal Shah, head of content management at Proton, the expertise of suppliers of alternative, non-OEM oil cooler hoses is doubtful, and they do not have a proper lab to test their components.
“The specific issue of the OCH on the Proton Exora is one of the issues that we’re paying attention to, and we are working on resolving it. Proton advises consumers not to buy non-genuine components,” Faisal said.
“For the Proton Exora which uses a turbo engine, it is a model that was launched in 2011 but the company is still doing a lot of activities to improve its performance, including resolving any issues such as the OCH,” he added. The OCH serves to circulate oil between the oil cooler and engine, and should it fail, oil can leak out and result in the engine overheating.
Faisal noted that in the years after the Exora was launched with a turbo engine, Proton identified the cause of the OCH leak, which at the time was made entirely out of rubber. The carmaker then initiated a recall to replace the OCH on affected vehicles as well as revising the service interval to 40,000 km.
He went to say that Proton developed a new OCH that was partly made of metal in 2018, which extended the service interval of the OCH to 80,000 km and it could better stand up to high temperatures and pressures.
Faisal’s statement is in response to Exora owners who are dissatisfied and claimed that the national carmaker had not resolve the OCH issue, which failed prematurely and caused them big losses. He said that Proton will recall the MPV if there are new technologies that can help improve the OCH in the future.
The OCH issue is widely discussed in Exora car clubs, with many referring to the component as a “time bomb.” Many owners revealed that they’ve had to purchase alternative OCH kits worth RM1,000, claiming that Proton had not offered a solution since 2011 for the issue. Some also complained that they have had to wait a long time for Proton service centres to fix their cars’ OCH, forcing them to seek third-party solutions.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with myTukar.
Make OCH lifetime warranty like the power window. Kawtim problem solved.
Can Toyota give lifetime warranty for their Takata airbags including afterlife support? No?
useless proton, 11 years still cant solve the same issue.
what different is non-oem och to the engine if the oem/ori och also a ticking bomb
If they still have this car after 11 years that means for 11 years it did not give them problems. What is there to complain about. LOL
Because we costum the OCH
If you custom aftermarket replace then why expect Proton to solve parts that is voided warranty?
Amran you are dead wrong. 11 years keeping the car not because its problems-free. It simply because no one want to trade it in. After sale value dropped like bird dropshit
so all Exora owner irregardless of year of make should go visit Proton already kah?
Isn’t that what they should have done so back when Proton called out for recall in 2016? No point crying over spilled milk if they continue to use the car for 6 more years without issues.
Alan, of course when they recalled we sent our car. But the bomb still exploded nevertheless afterward
Proton should fire him in the first place to solve this defect och issue.
There’s a user complaining he bought Exora last year and already have problematic OCH, even with the new iron OCH, it’s still cause same problem
Wasn’t this a problem wayyyyyyyyyyy back since the launch of Proton Preve CFE (Turbo)? I am sure a lot of owners of the CFE experienced this. Proton should’ve recall and fix the problem. Pity owners of Proton who had to endure this painful experience due to Proton reluctance to recall and fix this specific problem. Maybe just file a suit to Proton over their negligence of its duty to ensure safety and for all the damages the owners had to bear.
OCH problem has been going on for 11 years and proton engineers still failed to resolve it. Newer cars which used the updated OCH also suffers leakage even before 40km service interval.
Sembang apa doh?
Yes.. this is now 2022 and the OCH is not getting any better. My Exora CFE original wholly rubber OCH lasted 40,000km without issue, then changed to the metal-rubber so-called improved version.. which then ruptured and leaked at just 20,000km. The service centre still bill us for the kit, saying Proton only give 6 months warranty. Does this mean the service internal should be reduced to less than 20,000km instead?
Proron…. haiya!!!!
Launched since 2011 till today 2022, almost 10 years still cannot resolve the leaking issue…
Please think carefully before buy this old MPV.. i had many issues with this from damper to noisy turbo… if you have some more money please buy another reliable MPV likes Innova
Basically if these owners had heeded the recall to replace that time and did not skimp on using non OEM parts for later replacements, there would be no problems.
Brian, we did that exactly. We sent back our car. They replaced it. And then less than a year, the bomb still exploded.
Rubbish, after 7 years only came out with a recall.
You cannot provide any solution and then you block users’ own effort in rectifying this?
Poor design. And poor problem solving.
Dig own hole and jumped in it.
So this OCH issue is circulating more in 2011 or 2018 Exora models ???
Since 2011
In the first place, this Exora is already a sunset MPV with countless facelifts.
It should be a museum showpiece.
I have seen countless times this mpv at workshops that require lots of repairs.
My friend got so fed up..he just let the used car dude “absorb it”as trade in last week.
Buying this is like holidaying in hell hole Ukraine, trapped by incessant Putin missile barages.
Correct. This model has been a long time running now. Why they suddenly complain about it. Rubber parts like hoses will fail over time with heat and age, that is normal and expected to be replaced with prolonged car usage. To complain now just shows their unreasonable expectations that engine parts should last the lifetime of that car. It is totally ridiculous!
Parts gets changed with age all the time, that is normal. No engine is bulletproof that does not need replacements. Never. So peeps should stop expecting Proton engines are miracles better than AMG Mercedes ones. Come on!
Alan, you’re wrong. The complain was consistently on going since the beginning. It does not come up suddenly. Obviously you did not drive this model
Alan jgn jadi palatao lah….new metal OCH is even worse….just ask those new exora owners. we dont expect all the parts to last forever, but this bloody OCH is a ticking time bomb….it does not matter if its a new exora or old….same problem still persists and this bloody proton dare to say their OCH has been lab tested???
alan..x payah jd palatao la..kereta baru keluar kilang x sampai 1000km sudah pecah OCH looo
2011 launched, 2022 still haven’t fix. That tells you everything about this car company (and those X series are not Proton cars by the way).
LOL…Now hoo-ha wanna sell electric cars. Ggwp with such attitude.
2011 launch and they still cared about their customers long after warranty is over. That tells you everything about this car company (and those X series are not Proton cars by the way).
Because we costum the OCH
Syabas Gu
Proton cannot solve the OCH issue permanently but forbids owners to change outside. How long do they need to wait for proton?
Copy paste: “the expertise of suppliers of alternative, non-OEM oil cooler hoses is doubtful, and they do not have a proper lab to test their components.”
Reliability ? Like the name suggest. Proton
Once warranty period over fix outside je.. Proton after sales service cannot la. Under warranty kereta go back also dilly dally.. Pui
CamPro is really really old Engine Tech, Proton’s S4PH VVT on Saga, Iriz, & Persona are different though ..
I had a similar incident in 2015, the OCH pipe burst at DUKE highway without any warning, only the engine stop, died. Engine need to overhaul and the cost is almost 3K at a local workshop. If sent to PSC as my friend told, it would take months the exora to be ready, so no choice I need to used my car. After that PROTON recall all the OCH black hose and replace with half rubber half metal hose, but it does not help to solve the problem. Driving the exora bold with “as at when the OCH will burst again” in our mind, eventhough Proton said must change it after 40 kilometer, but it does not make sense, that is not a solution. That is why many exora bold users prefer customise the OCH hose to a metal pipe. Proton urge people not to use it because the will loose income and business from the hose suppliers. So where and what is the solution by Mr Faisal from proton, did your drive a exora bold or similar that have OCH?
Copy paste: “If you custom aftermarket replace then why expect Proton to solve parts that is voided warranty?”
Its true that proton have ran out of stocks for och pipes. The proton knows abt this och issue and evade taking responsibility for years and never provide any permanent solution for solving this defects. Now this Faisal talks like a old pipe..maybe he been absent minded abt customer service…just makan gaji buta. Proton should fire him in the first place to solve this defect och issue.
My Exora Manual With 140k Km Still No Problem Just Gasket Leaking Only, Change Break Pad
Manual mana ada och..jgn jadi palatao..
lol….cps mana ada OCH woii….cfe engine only
hahahaha…getah OCH cap ayam, baru keluar ezora tak sampai 5 bln, getah dh pecah, kepala bana betul.kajian tahi kucing la,pomen bwh pokok lg bagus.kajian apanya, berbelas tahun masalah x boleh selesai
Exora beli baru pakai tak sampai 2 tahun dan milage belum sampai 40000km, dah pecah och. Service berkala kat proton world car care seri kembangan. Dtg nak tukar, sekali kene bayar segala kerosakan yang disebabkan OCH ni. Rasa macam tak berbaloi pulak bila maintaining exora kat sini tapi warranty tak ada. Ntah booklet tulis lain, manager cakap lain. Dah tu, warranty cover bahagian mana je?
Head of Content Management at Proton, please then tell me why your 2018 improved version OCH only lasted 20,000km and we are still billed for its replacement kit with the Proton Service Centre telling us that Proton only gives 6 months warranty?
