ABS to be mandatory on motorycles 150cc and above in Malaysia following MIROS study – transport minister

The Malaysian government will make the fitment of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) mandatory for motorcycles displacing a capacity of 150 cc and more, Astro Awani reported.

According to transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, the mandatory fitment of ABS will apply to all motorcycle manufacturers present in Malaysia, however enforcement will only begin after findings from a detailed study carried out by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) have been received.

The government has given MIROS six months to carry out the study before it plans to carry out enforcement of the mandated ruling, within a period of two years after the study has concluded, said the transport minister. This study will include all stakeholders involved, including the motorcycle manufacturing industry as well as representatives from consumer groups, he added.

According to studies conducted by MIROS on ABS systems so far, the technology has been found to reduce accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists by at least 30%, Wee said. Anti-lock braking systems help prevent a motorcycle from skidding and failing to avoid hazards on the road, he added.

The transport minister stated that the year 2019 – before the pandemic – recorded 6,000 road deaths, while the year 2020 recorded 4,658 road deaths. Of these, between 64% and 67%, or two-thirds of the death toll involved motorcyclists, the report quoted Wee as saying.

Studies by MIROS have found that the use of ABS can save 30% of motorcyclists from fatal accidents, Wee told Harian Metro. Over to our north, Thailand has mandated ABS to be standard-fit equipment for all motorcycles produced after 2024.

This is certainly a good improvement. Rather than helping Perodua fake test results just to pass, MIROS should focus on such policy reports to convince the Government in pushing for better safety.

I think it will never work on this way. Law’s should be followed first on road safety. What’s the point if you are not following traffic rules and Law’s.

I hope a power limit and/or power to weight ratio cap for non abs motorcycle is implemented too. This is to avoid manufacturer making high powered 149.9cc ultra lightweight machine to avoid installing ABS.

Maybe anything over 10hp/100kg need abs, meaning LC equivalent bikes also need abs.

      12hp is very high? Lol.

It’s a good move. A lot of accidents can be prevented with ABS, very common to tuck the front end under hard braking in the wet.

Supercubs and scooters are already coming out with ABS…so probably not bother manufacturers too much but can expect prices to go up.

As someone who got hit by a bike because it can’t stop in time, as well as crash on a bike because of my lack of skill at emergency brake, I’d argue that anything that’s capable of reaching 70kmh should come with ABS.

But knowing how an average Malaysian think, that’s probably too much to ask for.

LC is actually quite capable ya. 12hp+ and rather light weight. Why not ABS? I know some people just want cheap and fast, and I admit my personal thought is that should not happen and I’d personally like to see abs on “capable” bikes. It’s normal for people to disagree.

  • Finally!!! Now Yamaha must sell their R25 with ABS. As current model, it’s ridiculous how a 35hp bike have no ABS

Front disk brakes are a standard fit for all motors, how else would they stop in time.

Opposed to front drum brakes? Lol. Yes, but there are still bikes sold here with front DRUM brakes today.

But yes, they don’t stop very well

ABS is really needed especially those who ride bicycles with their front/rear brake levers are on opposite sides compared to motorcycles. I’ve seen many riders fall when emergency braking only to discover that they used maximum braking force at the front brakes, ending up locking the front wheels. On a bicycle it locks up the rear which is not as bad.

that applies for new motorcycle on sale or even those old motorcycles will have to send back to factory to get ABS fitted?

  • I wonder out of those motorcyclists death statistics, how many of those involved below 150cc. I guess majority of it, but what percentage?

  • ABS does add significant cost to a bike.

But why not make it mandatory to have reflective tape on helmets? It’s phreaking cheap, helmet manufacturers can probably absorb the cost. It would likely save more lives too.

Since they are talking about brakes for motorcycles I don’t see an issue for new bikes but I would like the govt to serious relooking into hid lamps.
It’s so dangerous for other user. I think personally of you need that brightness in order to drive then you should not.

BMW’s and the likes had those lighting for German nights not Tnb lit Malaysia. To make things worst the national cars are being fitted with them too.

Then the small time users also upgrade their kancils wiras n new myvis have them. Well the ministry should make the law fair to all road users. I think the old govt went back on their decision citing economic difficulty by those vendors whom had hoarded stocks ahead of their ruling.

We have a right to be safe n not blinded by them. O think many agree and do hope people on this site would also lobby for us. I can’t drive anymore in the night and know many also seem to be in the same boat.

I think going back to the basics is our right.
