Two years after launching the X5 xDrive45e, BMW Group Malaysia has announced that the plug-in hybrid SUV has been updated with added equipment. The car receives a few bits from its sportier X6 sibling while keeping the price bump relatively modest.

Priced at RM457,498 on-the-road without insurance, the X5 is around RM6,000 more expensive than before. This figure includes the sales and service tax (SST) exemption that expires at the end of the month; with the government having just refused an outright extension (it did push the the delivery deadline back to March 31), you have less than ten days to get your booking in. Also included is a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and service package, which is still an optional extra over the standard two-year coverage.

The changes are few but significant and include Laserlight headlamps that replace the outgoing adaptive LED units – these come with full hexagonal daytime running lights (instead of the half-circles previously) and blue detailing around the projectors. The “bad weather light” function also supplants the functionality of the now-deleted front fog lights. In the wheel wells you’ll find 21-inch Y-spoke Style 741M alloy wheels in Orbit Grey, which are an inch larger than the old multi-spokes.

Safety-wise, the X5 has been upgraded with the fitment of rear side airbags, increasing the total airbag count to eight. It also now comes with Active Protection, essentially Munich’s version of Mercedes-Benz’s Pre-Safe that closes the windows and sunroof and pre-tensions the seat belts if the car detects an imminent collision.

However, you still don’t get Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features like adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist, although the Driving Assistant package with autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring continues to be standard fare. The Laserlights also feature adaptive high beams that block out other road users to avoid dazzling them, as before.

Standard kit otherwise remains the same and include the M Sport package, satin aluminium window trim and roof rails, keyless entry, push-button start, Vernasca leather upholstery, Fineline Stripe gloss brown wood trim, a Sensatec faux leather-wrapped dashboard, power-adjustable front seats with driver’s side memory, four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive air suspension and six-colour ambient lighting.

Other features that are fitted to this car are the BMW Display Key, BMW Live Cockpit Professional with twin 12.3-inch displays, dual 10.2-inch rear touchscreens, parking assist, a 360-degree camera system, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system and a hands-free powered tailgate.

Also unchanged is the powertrain, led by a B58 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six that produces 286 PS from 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Sandwiched between it and the ZF eight-speed sport automatic gearbox is an electric motor, making 113 PS and 265 Nm and contributing to a total system output of 394 PS and a thumping 600 Nm.

So equipped, the xDrive45e sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 235 km/h, while fuel consumption is rated at just 2.5 litres per 100 km on the NEDC cycle. A 24 kWh lithium-ion battery allows for an all-electric range of 77 km and can be charged in six hours and 50 minutes using a 3.7 kW AC BMW i Wallbox (or ten hours and 30 minutes using a three-pin, 240-volt domestic socket).

    • Surprised 400k+ car without ACC. This is a cruiser type car so you’d want to chillax on the highway and let the car drive itself, but too bad it wasn’t specced that way.

Im workin in car dealer and too bad the SUV demand is falling like jingga. Not sure why but nowadays all generation Z come in to showroom to look for sedan. Not many buying SUV. Showed to them they straight say dont want those old man car or Mom car or parent car aka SUV. A paradigm shift frm generation Y and X indeed..hmmm because of Z gen the Y gen was also influenced to buy sedan to look younger. Yeah…normally children will opt for different category to separate them frm their parent or senior generation i think. Second hand market will be flooded with SUV and price will surely be affected.

    • Thanks for sharing. That’s an interesting observation and seems to go against the current wisdom that SUVs will replace all sedans. I sure hope this is real because that means sedan, properly designed, energy-efficient vehicles still stand a chance against the SUV wave.

Interesting. Considering the SUVs trend was on the upward trajectory before this.

I can’t speak for everyone but yes I didn’t consider SUVs in my 20-30s but now mid 30s, I appreciate the versatility of an SUV or even a MPV. Comfortable long range, easier to fit family-kids related things, easy to fit friends, extra space helps if need to transport things like moving houses etc.

that all Gen Z and millennial are buying the latest “Beca”. Fully speced with air horns and adaptive power regeneration via advance technology called Dynamo.

Yeah, currently minority Gen Z and Gen Y knows that their low education standard lack of english proficiency cannot earn them high pay salaries to buy good sporty , comfortable and safe SUVs including needing slightly higher maintenance..

So starting with less affordability and lower income Gen Y, then Gen Y will buy UNCLE AND AUNTIE LOOKING SEDANS like PERODUA BEZZA , TOYOTA VIOS,NISSAN ALMERA PROTON SAGA THEN these GEN Y will use and pass down these old man looking sedans to GEN Z .

The other majority of the educated higher income Gen Y will still buy SUVs and pass down to their Richer and more educated Gen Z in which the sedans appear to them as low class old man looking sedans as non functional usage.

Not necessarily, I study in Sunway University college now and moving to Monash later on. Our college parking full of BMW 2, 3 series and merc sedans. Very few Suv. If there are, those suv are lower rank honda CRV and mazda mx5 type. But majority are sedan or hatch like Mini base or S. Yeah, Im driving a g20 330i my family bought for me for my college life. They let me choose between 2022 X3 or 330i and straight I chose 330i. Just thought that SUV is very parent generation. Girls of my age also felt that way. They always choose to ride in my ride rather than SUV. I dont think sedan will look old because it is nearest to coupe or sport car which symbolise young and energetic. SuV look tired and bulky and floaty leading to nausea for most. For versatile, I think a minivan lile those Vellfire will do as long as not fully accomodate passangers with back row declined, but those are proven unsafe in accident. Anyway, Im 19 so perfectly fit into Z gen and yeah our peers mostly dislike SUV image. Maybe another 20 years when we become soccer dad or mom we might choose those but certainly not now. For me, i rather go for 5 series at age 30-40, SUV like x5 looks too tired probably suit the 50-70 age range.

That’s precisely the reason I got an SUV! So I can disassociate myself from entitled spoiled 19 years old like you!

before people start complaining about the price hike the laser headlight alone is a 15k option on some M model so reasonable.

6k for Laserlights and 21″ rims is a bargain.

All malaysia cars need ventilated seats for the hot weather. Not sure why is this option so hard to come as standard. Is it more costly than Laser Light and that way too big rims.
