APAD announces that the age limit for taxis, e-hailing vehicles in Malaysia has been increased to 15 years

The land public transport agency (APAD) has announced that the age limit for taxi and ride-hailing vehicles in the country has been increased to 15 years. This applies to all such vehicles for hire in the Peninsular, and for ride-hailing vehicles in Sabah, Sarawak and the federal territory of Labuan.

In a statement released yesterday, the agency said the extension was in line with the transport ministry’s desire to sustain the taxi and ride-hailing industry in order to improve the country’s public transport system.

It said the extension for both taxi and ride-hailing vehicles come with three conditions. The first is that the vehicles reach the maximum age limit in the period starting January 1 this year. In addition, all vehicles that will be given the approval must comply with and pass all Puspakom’s mandatory periodic inspection requirements to ensure their roadworthiness.

The third condition is compliance with other operating conditions that have been set to ensure the level of vehicle safety, user comfort and the industry’s image are guaranteed. The agency said that it hoped that with the announcement, taxi and e-hailing industry players can improve the quality of their service.

With the change in Government, is APAD now working to the benefits of road users or just the crony taxi fleet owners? Yes this ruling does not benefit users who are further endangered by old & unsafe cars, nor benefits cab drivers who don’t own these old & decrepit cabs. The old ruling would have forced taxi fleet owners to change to newer & safer cars but now they have no need to change so soon, so they cab drivers continue to drive decrepit cars while cronies continue to roll in cash and likely cashback to the Transport Minister.

Hail our Pakatan Hopeless! You can’t hope them to take care of your safety anymore!

i dont think u understand the system. first of all not everyone afford to buy a new car . if they do they wont need to work as e hallling drivers. secondly every year when they renew the car license they have to let puspakom check everything before approval. all the cars have to be in good condition. dont play politic agenda here. i dont think u understand how they run it at all. if u expect to change car every 10 years then u should expect an increase fare as well. not only ur life that should be taken care of. drivers life should get the same exact treatment.

Whatever you are saying make sense in books only. In real life, bad, smelly and unsafe taxis still around. So, how do this puspakom works? Come to jb, especially you can see smelly, and dirty and bad conditions taxis at jb custom operating regularly. So, do really puspakom do their job?

with e-hailing cars always being trashed and high mileage, the age limit of taxis and e-hailing cars will see many of the cars stranded and overheated on the road side. 15 years age limit is way too old.

Ya I agree. E-hailing company should double up the current fare, so that the driver can change their car after ten years to maintain the good car.

That’s the way I like it, fare must increase accordingly to current new car prices.

Ya I curious too. The E-hailing company should double the fare so the driver only can maintain their quality of service.

Can I clarify on this statement it said [ The first is that the vehicles reach the maximum age limit in the period starting January 1, 2023 ]

Meaning is the Vehicle Register in 2008 & below is considered (reach the maximum age limit).

Am I right on my understanding ❓

    Please comment.

    Thank you

    • Better Man, Check out TheStar’s article.

“First, to qualify for the extension, the vehicle must have reached the previous maximum age limit of 10 years on or after Jan 1.”

So this is only applied to the cars first-registered after Jan 1, 2013.

Look at it this way. With new automobile garage doing puspakom job, they need more cars which are old to check which is good for the business.
